CAPTCHA, a short form of “Completely Automated Public Turing test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart”, is a computer program that can generate and grade tests that most humans can pass, but current computer programs cannot. This paper advances research on image-based CAPTCHA by incorporating the object segment collages. We first collect object segments from thousands of images by using our self-developed collection tool. Then, we create an image collage that compiles randomly selected object segments. To increase the difficulty for computer detection algorithms, we embed some features such as noisy background, object segment occlusion and object segment orientation update. …

Love At The Landfill, Jerry Zezima

Love, as a newfangled saying goes, means never having to say you're sorry for practicing social distancing. My wife, Sue, and I, who have always believed in social togetherness, recently celebrated our 42nd anniversary in the most romantic way possible in this age of quarantine: We got out of the house and took a trip to the dump.

The Urgency Of Global Awareness, Julius A. Amin

Proceedings: 2020 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

The 2020 Global Voices Symposium occurred at a momentous time in the world. During the Symposium there was chatter about the looming threat of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which already had ravaged communities in China. Few predicted its rapid spread. Less than a week after the Symposium, many governors and local leaders in the U.S. ordered K-12 schools and universities to close as a preliminary measure to curb the spread of the virus. Three weeks after the Symposium, eight states in the U.S. issued shelter-in-place orders for their citizens, and other states were contemplating similar action. Repeatedly, people were being told …

With COVID-19 on the loose, I heard it is a good idea to start wearing a mask. So, I rounded up a bunch of filter-type materials to make one. My three finalists were a drip coffee filter, an polyester scarf and a vacuum bag (from my stockpile of bags for my old Hoover).

Caddying, Peter Braun

I'm not so sure about caddying. To me, it is modern day slavery. You know, kid. I don't feel like carrying my own bag. You carry it for me. Sorry that I broke the 14-club limit by having 25 clubs. It should still be well under 50 pounds. I know you're only 11, and weigh about 90 pounds, but you should have no problem with a 50-pound bag. It's only half your weight. While you're at it. Never lose my ball, even if I hit it 60 yards into the woods. And be sure to rake all my sand traps.

Coronavirus Cancelled Our Wedding, But We Had It Anyway, Jenna Wimshurst

Who could've guessed that the wedding we'd spent the last year saving and planning for would be cancelled because some guy in China ate a bat? I mean what were the chances! According to our insurance company, quite high as they're not giving us a penny. So with no wedding and no money what were two gorgeous lesbians supposed to do on the special date that we'd already had engraved on our wedding rings? Host an unofficial wedding in our living room and live stream it online of course.

The call came one Sunday evening in the spring. My son's weekly check-in from the West Coast. "Hi, Mom, uh, guess what? The company's gone belly up. I'm thinking about heading back.
