Due to my flexible work schedule, I often run errands that are traditionally associated with the matriarch of the family — in other words, the mother/wife/supervisor/figure of maturity and common sense. Whether I’m shopping for bras or perusing the feminine hygiene aisles at Walmart wearing sunglasses, a full-coverage mask and a hoodie, I’m frequently complimented by female shoppers and cashiers on what a “good dad” I am, and how lucky my wife and daughters are to have a sucker — I mean a man like me — around.

If I ever won Powerball and survived the shock, a technical necessity since you can’t collect if you are legally dead, I still wouldn’t be in the money. That’s because my wife, a neat person, would inadvertently throw out the ticket or I, a messy person, would put the ticket somewhere in the house for safekeeping and never find it again.

The Marian Library was founded in 1943 by the Society of Mary, the Catholic religious order which also founded the University of Dayton in 1850. Those two dates are significant because the library was established to mark the centennial of the university’s founding. With exemplary forethought, the Society of Mary allowed seven years to build a library collection so that it would be ready for the official centennial. This deliberate mindset and commitment to education is still apparent today, even as the decline in vocations means fewer Marianists and more laypeople filling the offices on campus. From the beginning, the …

“Step away from the gnome!” I threatened. We were in the attic. My eyes hurled daggers as my husband picked up the two-foot-tall garden gnome and headed for the “toss” pile. The gnome was a little raggedy and begged for a new paint job. Dumpy, as I called him (the gnome, not my husband), was one of those oddball finds that seem so great at the time then mutate into one of those, “What was I thinking?” episodes of my life. Again, I’m talking about the gnome, not my husband.

We built a beautiful post-and-beam home with no interior walls. Yup, it was all one room except for the bathroom. We could sit in our first-floor living room and look up over the rail at our bedroom and even farther up at another little loft with my writing desk, keyboard and my dad’s rocking chair. We could throw dirty dishrags up over the balcony toward the laundry area. We could drop a sweater down for whomever was cold. Christmas lights started 30 feet up in the tiny sky loft and swung all the way down through the bedroom and farther …

I have always been considered a dim bulb, except for the fact that I married a bright woman, who proves it by making me the one to risk electrocution whenever a light bulb needs to be changed. So fearful am I when it comes to wattage that I was shocked — shocked! — to find myself helping out with electrical work being done at our house.

Dance As Embodied Ethics, Aili W. Bresnahan, Einav Katan-Schmid, Sara Houston
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
This chapter, composed of three parts by three different authors, proposes that one of the many possible ways that dance might embody philosophic thought and discourse is via embodying ethical practice. Each author contributes a different perspective on the relationship between dance and ethical activity. The perspectives can be read both as separate ideas and as interrelated thoughts. Einav Katan-Schmid views "dance" as a metaphor for "embodied ethics." She analyzes dance as an embodied activity of decision-making that regulates the tension between co-existing physical dynamics. Following from the idea of "dancing," she suggests that one think of "embodied ethics" in …

Investigation Of Various Techniques For Controlled Void Formation In Fiberglass/Epoxy Composites, Donald A. Klosterman, Charles Browning, Issa Hakim, Kyle Lach
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The effect of porosity in composite materials has been studied for years due to its deleterious effects on mechanical properties, especially matrix dominated properties. Currently there is an increasing use of composites in infrastructure worldwide, for example bridge components, residential and building structures, marine structures such as piers and docks, and large industrial chemical tanks. Most of these applications use fiberglass composites. Unfortunately, most of the published literature has focused on carbon fiber composites, in which fiber diameter and gas-fiber interactions are different than fiberglass composites. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to revisit the effect of porosity but specifically …
