This article describes a private, mid-sized university library’s experience of hosting a music festival-themed event in the library building as part of new student orientation, with program evaluation and student learning assessment at the forefront of planning. The authors and co-planners will discuss four years of data to explore the connection between library outreach and students’ use of the library, their perceptions of the institution, and the role the event plays in shaping student success. It offers recommendations for collaborating with academic libraries and approaches in future cross-campus collaborations, including using a scaffolding approach to outline the goals and assessment …

Beyond fifth-generation (B5G) networks, or so-called "6G", is the next-generation wireless communications systems that will radically change how Society evolves. Edge intelligence is emerging as a new concept and has extremely high potential in addressing the new challenges in B5G networks by providing mobile edge computing and edge caching capabilities together with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the proximity of end users. In edge intelligence empowered B5G networks, edge resources are managed by AI systems for offering powerful computational processing and massive data acquisition locally at edge networks. AI helps to obtain efficient resource scheduling strategies in a complex environment with …
Automated Residential Energy Audits Using A Smart Wifi Thermostat-Enabled Data Mining Approach, Abdulrahman Alanezi, Kevin Hallinan, Kefan Huang
Automated Residential Energy Audits Using A Smart Wifi Thermostat-Enabled Data Mining Approach, Abdulrahman Alanezi, Kevin Hallinan, Kefan Huang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Smart WiFi thermostats, when they first reached the market, were touted as a means for achieving substantial heating and cooling energy cost savings. These savings did not materialize until additional features, such as geofencing, were added. Today, average savings from these thermostats of 10–12% in heating and 15% in cooling for a single-family residence have been reported. This research aims to demonstrate additional potential benefit of these thermostats, namely as a potential instrument for conducting virtual energy audits on residences. In this study, archived smart WiFi thermostat measured temperature data in the form of a power spectrum, corresponding historical weather …

“Thank God you’re home,” my oldest daughter said, greeting me at the door. She let out a long yawn and stretched. Behind her, my youngest daughter’s head rested on the kitchen table. She snored faintly as her shamrock headband wiggled with each snort. My mother hopped up from her seat. “We had the best day,” she announced. A broad smile filled her bright face. “We ate lunch, we baked cookies, we made a craft, we went for a walk, and we did all of that in between the kids' classes on Zoom.” “Oh wow,” I said. “And you did all …

As librarians at the University of Dayton’s Marian Library, we help curate a collection of religious artifacts that, depending on how you count it, numbers in the hundreds of thousands. It includes postage stamps, wine labels, books, statues and rosaries. Many of the items are Catholic and have been gifted to the library by charitable individuals looking to do the right thing with a family heirloom or the collection of a recently deceased loved one. Donations could include anything from medieval manuscripts to a car air freshener featuring Our Lady of Guadalupe. In many cases, donations are welcome. But …
