Evaluating Deep-Learning Models For Debris-Covered Glacier Mapping, Zhiyuan Xie, Vijayan K. Asari, Umesh K. Haritashya Dec 2021

Evaluating Deep-Learning Models For Debris-Covered Glacier Mapping, Zhiyuan Xie, Vijayan K. Asari, Umesh K. Haritashya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In recent decades, mountain glaciers have experienced the impact of climate change in the form of accelerated glacier retreat and other glacier-related hazards such as mass wasting and glacier lake outburst floods. Since there are wide-ranging societal consequences of glacier retreat and hazards, monitoring these glaciers as accurately and repeatedly as possible is important. However, the accurate glacier boundary, especially the debriscovered glacier (DCG) boundary, which is one of the primary inputs in many glacier analyses, remains a challenge even after many years of research using conventional remote sensing methods or machine-learning methods. The GlacierNet, a deep-learning-based approach, utilized the …

Acute Consumption Of A Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Impairs Microvascular Function In Midwestern Hispanic Males, Emma Hirshman, Anne R. Crecelius

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Hispanic males are at risk for cardiovascular disease and consume high levels of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB); yet, their acute vascular response to SSBs is unknown. Ten healthy Hispanic men (18-45 years old) consumed a SSB and reactive hyperemia was performed prior to, immediately following, and 1-hr post-consumption. Both peak and total (area under the curve) forearm blood flow were attenuated immediately following consumption but returned to at or above pre-consumption levels at the 1-hr test.

An Educational Leader’S E-Mails To The Parents During Covid-19 Pandemic, Bilgen Kiral, Corinne Brion Dec 2021

An Educational Leader’S E-Mails To The Parents During Covid-19 Pandemic, Bilgen Kiral, Corinne Brion

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to determine what kinds of e-mails an education leader (school principal) sent to the parents of the students at the beginning, during, and end of the term during the COVID-19 pandemic process. In this study, the expression “educational leader” was used instead of the school principal.

The reason for this is that the school principal fully assumes the role of educational leadership during the pandemic period. The subject of the study is the transformation process in communication due to the pandemic. This transformation is e-mails, one of the digital communication tools that aim to reach everyone …

The Demands Of Encounter In A Globalized Community Of Scholars: Shedding Light On The Place Of Trust In The Ritual Of Knowledge Creation, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai Dec 2021

The Demands Of Encounter In A Globalized Community Of Scholars: Shedding Light On The Place Of Trust In The Ritual Of Knowledge Creation, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

As institutions of learning become more diverse in their members and their curricula offerings, it has become necessary to articulate the demands of encounter. A distinction must be made between meeting and encounter. The former refers to a choreographed proximity of bodies. The latter refers to the totality of what it means to be human – a being intricately linked to other beings through life-giving webs of relationships. Therefore, transformative education must be grounded in the ritual of encounters because such a ritual allows for the possibility for new discourses that lead to knowledge creation. Such discourses allow for a …

The Solubilizing Of Recombinant Influenza Polymerase Acidic Protein, Quinn D. Murray Dec 2021

The Solubilizing Of Recombinant Influenza Polymerase Acidic Protein, Quinn D. Murray

Honors Theses

Influenza’s potential to start a pandemic is a global concern. The costs of the COVID 19 pandemic to the international economy and health are a clear example of the harm influenza could inflict. Even in a normal year, influenza is responsible for 36.5 thousand deaths, 475 thousand hospitalizations and 27 million infections. With rising drug resistance, new antivirals are imperative to safeguard the worldwide population. One potential source of novel antivirals is the inhibition of polymerase acidic protein (PA), which plays an integral role in influenza’s replication. While PA’s structure is known, current PA crystal forms do not provide an …

Why Searle's Objection To Twin Earth Is Problematic, Paul F. Scheeler Dec 2021

Why Searle's Objection To Twin Earth Is Problematic, Paul F. Scheeler

Honors Theses

The philosopher John Searle wrote that, “The fundamental question in the philosophy of language has always been: How does language relate to reality?” For much of history, people assumed the answer to this question was “the mind”, and the debate was then about how the mind related language to reality. Starting in the 1970s, this view was challenged by the philosopher Hilary Putnam and others who claimed that meaning is not only in the mind but also involved the environment (a view known as semantic externalism). In this paper, I will give some background to Putnam’s semantic externalism and will …

Viability Of Postconsumer Thermoplastics In Consumer Grade Additive Manufacturing, Peter A. Fabe Dec 2021

Viability Of Postconsumer Thermoplastics In Consumer Grade Additive Manufacturing, Peter A. Fabe

Honors Theses

Consumer grade additive manufacturing, colloquially referred to as 3D printing, has become a popular means of rapid prototyping and fabrication used by engineers, educators, artists, and hobbyists alike. As companies begin to produce recycled filament as feedstock for fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printers, it is important to quantify differences in the mechanical properties of virgin and first-reuse recycled plastics so that users can determine the viability of recycled filament for various end-use applications. This thesis explores the mechanical properties of two common postconsumer thermoplastics, rPLA and rPETG (where rPLA/rPETG denotes 100% recycled PLA/PETG), in comparison to their virgin counterparts …

The Cantor Set, Trees, And Compact Metric Spaces, Wyatt N. Lee Dec 2021

The Cantor Set, Trees, And Compact Metric Spaces, Wyatt N. Lee

Honors Theses

The Cantor Set is a famous topological set developed from an infinite process of starting with the interval [0,1] and, at each iteration, removing the middle third of the intervals remaining. Our goal is to determine some of the properties of this unintuitive set and to show that it is homeomorphic to any general compact metric space with similar properties. To do so, we show that the Cantor Set is topologically equivalent to a tree, a more familiar structure, and use this fact to establish a homeomorphism to the general compact metric space.

In order to better understand how University of Dayton students are thinking and feeling about their online educational experiences, the Center for Online Learning posted a survey on the homepage of Isidore that was open from Monday, Nov. 29, …

Estimating Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat-Enabled Thermal Comfort Control Savings For Any Residence, Abdulelah D. Alhamayani, Qiancheng Sun, Kevin Hallinan Dec 2021

Estimating Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat-Enabled Thermal Comfort Control Savings For Any Residence, Abdulelah D. Alhamayani, Qiancheng Sun, Kevin Hallinan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Nowadays, most indoor cooling control strategies are based solely on the dry-bulb temperature, which is not close to a guarantee of thermal comfort of occupants. Prior research has shown cooling energy savings from use of a thermal comfort control methodology ranging from 10 to 85%. The present research advances prior research to enable thermal comfort control in residential buildings using a smart Wi-Fi thermostat. "Fanger's Predicted Mean Vote model" is used to define thermal comfort. A machine learning model leveraging historical smart Wi-Fi thermostat data and outdoor temperature is trained to predict indoor temperature. A Long Short-Term-Memory neural network algorithm …

Optimizing Hvac Energy Consumption Through Occupancy Detection With Machine Learning Based Classifiers, Vibhu Sharma, Abhimanyu Singh

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are pivotal for maintaining indoor comfort and air quality in buildings. However, inefficient HVAC operation can lead to unnecessary energy consumption and increased costs. This research explores the application of machine learning (ML) techniques for occupancy detection using environmental factors to optimize HVAC energy consumption. Analyzing a dataset comprising environmental observations like temperature, humidity, light, and CO2 levels alongside occupancy status, we evaluate various ML algorithms, including K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and others, for accurately predicting room occupancy. Additionally, we conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA) using box plots to visualize …
