Policy And Practice: Evaluating Workflows And Communication For Maternity Leave At The University Of Dayton, Christina A. Beis, Kayla Harris, Gabby Campana

Reports from the Gender Equity Research Fellowship

Maternity leave experiences and policy workflows at the University of Dayton have not been formally reviewed since the creation of an all benefit-eligible employee paid maternity leave policy in 2017. This study examines the lived experience of faculty and staff who have taken maternity leave since the implementation of the policy and faculty, staff, and supervisor perceptions of the current leave policies and workflows. Interviews and surveys found a need for clearer documentation in policies, an expansion of parental leave for the non-birth parent, and supervisory support. The report concludes with recommendations based on this research for implementing updates to …

Guns And Practical Reason: An Ethical Exploration Of Guns And Language, Mark Ryan Jan 2022

Guns And Practical Reason: An Ethical Exploration Of Guns And Language, Mark Ryan

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

There is no shortage of words and rhetoric being offered up in relation to the topic of guns, much of it directed to the political standoff regarding how to respond to gun violence. Yet the debate over guns in America, especially as it concerns putting in conversation the positions of “gun people” and “non-gun people,” barely scratches the surface of substantive convictions held on both sides about the place of guns in our lives. A critical reason for this is that the language and rhetoric of the debate suppresses such convictions, keeping the discussion shallow and antagonistic. This, I argue, …

Vietnamese Document Analysis: Dataset, Method And Benchmark Suite, Khang Nguyen, An Nguyen, Nguyen D. Vo, Tam Nguyen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Document image understanding is increasingly useful since the number of digital documents is increasing day-by-day and the need for automation is increasing. Object detection plays a significant role in detecting vital objects and layouts in document images and contributes to providing a clearer understanding of the documents. Nonetheless, previous research mainly focuses on English document images, and studies on Vietnamese document images are limited. In this study, we extensively benchmark state-of-the-art object detectors and analyze the performance of each method on Vietnamese document images. Moreover, we also investigate the effectiveness of four different loss functions on the experimental object detection …

Five Rivers MetroParks Collaboration Data Archive

The invasive tree Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana) is problematic in open habitats in the American Midwest. We investigated the efficacy of various control techniques on P. calleryana invasion in grasslands. Treatments were applied to P. calleryana stems that were single-stemmed trees (around 7 years; n = 40 stems), and response of those stems was measured.

Finding An Effective Shape Parameter Strategy To Obtain The Optimal Shape Parameter Of The Oscillatory Radial Basis Function Collocation In 3d, Quinnlan Aiken, Annika Murray, Ar Lamichhane Jan 2022

Finding An Effective Shape Parameter Strategy To Obtain The Optimal Shape Parameter Of The Oscillatory Radial Basis Function Collocation In 3d, Quinnlan Aiken, Annika Murray, Ar Lamichhane

Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Past Content

Recent research into using the Method of Approximate Particular Solutions to numerically solve partial differential equations, has shown promising results. High levels of accuracy can be obtained when implementing this method, however the success of this collocation method is dependent on a shape parameter that is found in nearly all radial basis functions. If the shape parameter is not appropriately chosen, then it can provide an unacceptable result. Two shape parameter strategies are considered, a random variable shape parameter strategy and a leave-one-out cross validation strategy. The main objective of this work is to assess the viability of using these …

Fixed Points Of Functions Below The Line Y = X, Grace Fryling, Harrison Rouse Jan 2022

Fixed Points Of Functions Below The Line Y = X, Grace Fryling, Harrison Rouse

Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Past Content

This paper concerns fixed points of functions whose graphs lie on or below the line y = x. Using the Monotone Convergence Theorem, we show that positive fixed points of such functions are “attracting on the right” so long as we include a couple of further assumptions about these functions near their fixed points. As an illustrative example, we confirm that this is the case for the function y = x sin x; the positive fixed points of this function “attract on the right” and “repel on the left.” Further, we generalize by showing that differentiability is in fact not …

Efficient Conformal Binary Classification Under Nearest Neighbor, Maxwell Lovig Jan 2022

Efficient Conformal Binary Classification Under Nearest Neighbor, Maxwell Lovig

Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Past Content

There are many types of statistical inferences that can be used today: Frequentist, Bayesian, Fiducial, and others. However, Vovk introduced a new version of statistical inference known as Conformal Predictions. Conformal Predictions were designed to reduce the assumptions of standard prediction methods. Instead of assuming all observations are drawn independently and identically distributed, we instead assume exchangeability. Meaning, all N! possible orderings of our N observations are equally likely. This is more applicable to fields such as machine learning where assumptions may not be easily satisfied. In the case of binary classification, Vovk provided the nearest neighbors (NN) measure which …

At The Same Time African Women And Mothers Resisted: Dialectical Constructions Of Race And Gender In The Black Atlantic And Early Colonies Of The New World, Anna L. Biesecker-Mast Jan 2022

At The Same Time African Women And Mothers Resisted: Dialectical Constructions Of Race And Gender In The Black Atlantic And Early Colonies Of The New World, Anna L. Biesecker-Mast

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies

We find the rough beginning of this story in the dynamic and contingent scene of the early Atlantic. I say contingent because it is these early complex transatlantic (political and cultural) encounters that fundamentally shaped and shape the trajectory of modernity. At the heart of this development of modernity are constructions of race and gender. And given the contingency of history, it must be noted that, if responses to these encounters had been different, perhaps we would be living with a different modernity—maybe one with different or less harmful notions of race and gender difference.

Understanding how these conceptualizations came …

Theories In The Flesh: Latina Feminist Philosophy Approaches To Identity, Sofia Garcia Jan 2022

Theories In The Flesh: Latina Feminist Philosophy Approaches To Identity, Sofia Garcia

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies

The idea of identity is thoroughly debated by a plethora of philosophers, and it is also a subject that non-scholars question and battle within themselves as well. For those in marginalized communities, whether they are Hispanic, African American, LGBTQ, identity is extremely complex and comes with extreme political, socio-economic, and physiological implications as well. In our current climate these identity questions play out in discussions over critical race theory, immigration policies like DACA, and so many other grave issues. Latinx philosophers take conversations about identity seriously and ask questions such as what is Latina identity really? Is Latina mestiza identity …

Sex Sounds: Vectors Of Difference In Electronic Music, Daniele Shlomit Sofer Jan 2022

Sex Sounds: Vectors Of Difference In Electronic Music, Daniele Shlomit Sofer

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

In Sex Sounds, Daniele Shlomit Sofer investigates the repeated focus on sexual themes in electronic music since the 1950s. Debunking electronic music's origin myth—that it emerged in France and Germany, invented by Pierre Schaeffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen, respectively—Sofer defines electronic music more inclusively to mean any music with an electronic component, drawing connections between academic institutions, radio studios, experimental music practice, hip-hop production, and histories of independent and commercial popular music. Through a broad array of detailed case studies—examining music that ranges from Schaeffer's musique concrète to a video workshop by Annie Sprinkle—Sofer offers a groundbreaking look at the …

Exploring The Predictive Power Of Machine Learning For Energy Consumption In Buildings, Vibhu Sharma Jan 2022

Exploring The Predictive Power Of Machine Learning For Energy Consumption In Buildings, Vibhu Sharma

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications

This study investigates the application of machine learning techniques to predict energy consumption in buildings. Five machine learning models (linear regression, decision trees, random forest, support vector machines, and neural networks) are evaluated, and a permutation feature importance analysis is conducted to identify the most influential features. The random forest model emerges as the top performer, achieving a mean absolute error of 15.2%. Temperature, solar radiation, and relative humidity are found to be the important features in energy prediction. The study demonstrates the potential of machine learning for energy prediction in buildings, contributing to more efficient energy management and sustainability.

Meltpondnet: A Swin Transformer U-Net For Detection Of Melt Ponds On Arctic Sea Ice, Ivan Sudakow, Vijayan K. Asari, Ruixu Liu, Denis Demchev Jan 2022

Meltpondnet: A Swin Transformer U-Net For Detection Of Melt Ponds On Arctic Sea Ice, Ivan Sudakow, Vijayan K. Asari, Ruixu Liu, Denis Demchev

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

High-resolution aerial photographs of Arctic region are a great source for different sea ice feature recognition, which are crucial to validate, tune, and improve climate models. Melt ponds on the surface of melting Arctic sea ice are of particular interest as they are sensitive and valuable indicators and are proxy to the processes in the Arctic climate system. Manual analysis of this remote sensing data is extremely difficult and time-consuming due to the complex shapes and unpredictable boundaries of the melt ponds, and that leads to the necessity for automatizing the processes. In this study, we propose a robust and …

Circuit Optimization Techniques For Efficient Ex-Situ Training Of Robust Memristor Based Liquid State Machine, Alex Henderson, Christopher Yakopcic, Cory Merkel, Steven Harbour, Tarek M. Taha, Hananel Hazan Jan 2022

Circuit Optimization Techniques For Efficient Ex-Situ Training Of Robust Memristor Based Liquid State Machine, Alex Henderson, Christopher Yakopcic, Cory Merkel, Steven Harbour, Tarek M. Taha, Hananel Hazan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Spiking neural network hardware offers a high performance, power-efficient and robust platform for the processing of complex data. Many of these systems require supervised learning, which poses a challenge when using gradient-based algorithms due to the discontinuous properties of SNNs. Memristor based hardware can offer gains in portability, power reduction, and throughput efficiency when compared to pure CMOS. This paper proposes a memristor-based spiking liquid state machine (LSM). The inherent dynamics of the LSM permit the use of supervised learning without backpropagation for weight updates. To carry out the design space evaluation of the LSM for optimal hardware performance, several …

Slavery And The History Of Congress’S Enumerated Powers, Jeffrey Schmitt Jan 2022

Slavery And The History Of Congress’S Enumerated Powers, Jeffrey Schmitt

School of Law Faculty Publications

In his first inaugural address, President Abraham Lincoln declared, “I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” Like virtually all Americans before the Civil War, Lincoln believed in what historians call the “national consensus” on slavery. According to this consensus, Congress’s enumerated powers were not broad enough to justify any regulation of slavery within the states. Legal scholars who support the modern reach of federal powers have thus conventionally argued …
