Mary And Feminism, Charles J. Brady S.M. Mar 1975

Mary And Feminism, Charles J. Brady S.M.

University of Dayton Review

Throughout the centuries pious Christians have outdone themselves in praising the Holy Virgin with extravagant titles. A look in any collection of the praises of Mary will reveal such titles as: mountain, because Mary's virtue elevates her over all other saints; cloud, because she protects us from the heat of God's wrath; cistern, oyster, and elephant.

The twentieth century, however, may be the first century to claim the distinction of suggesting a pejorative therionimic for the Blessed Virgin, namely, that of goat—a Judas goat, who leads her sisters along the path of slavery to traditional, stereotyped roles for women.

This …

Mary—An Answer To Woman's Role In The Church?, William J. Cole S.M. Mar 1975

Mary—An Answer To Woman's Role In The Church?, William J. Cole S.M.

University of Dayton Review

After having heard and responded to lectures and discussions on the feminine movement, the place of womanhood and Mary in the Old and New Testament, her relationship to the roles of wife and mother and consecrated servant of the Lord, and then having considered woman's presence (or shall we say absence?) in the institutions of the Church, and finally having experienced Father Schmemann's masterful exposition of the Orthodox point of view, what more can one hope to say about Mary and womanhood? It would seem that the whole ground has been covered, and yet one of the fundamental questions has …

Consecrated Celibacy And The Mystery Of Mary, Elizabeth Lang O.S.U. Mar 1975

Consecrated Celibacy And The Mystery Of Mary, Elizabeth Lang O.S.U.

University of Dayton Review

The mystery and wonder of Mary as she lived her life was so great that we can find her as an ideal Christian married woman and an ideal woman religious. I am not implying by that statement that married women are not religious-I am just making the distinction between the married state and the religious state. In my judgment both are beautiful callings to a deeply spiritual life. Consecrated celibacy and all that it entails may well be the only—certainly the biggest—difference between them. Mary was one of the anawim, one of the humble souls who staked all on Yahweh's …

The Mother Of Jesus And The Authorship Of The Epistle To The Hebrews, J. Massyngberde Ford Mar 1975

The Mother Of Jesus And The Authorship Of The Epistle To The Hebrews, J. Massyngberde Ford

University of Dayton Review

One of the books of the New Testament which shows a profound and original insight into the Old Testament is the Epistle to the Hebrews. There are approximately thirty-seven quotations and seventy citations in it. It has been suggested that this book is based on a long homily on Ps. 110 which combines kingship and priesthood according to Melchizedek. … Now there are three characteristics which would suggest that the homily was composed by one who had not the advantage of a formal education. Firstly, the author does not give references for his or her Biblical quotations or citations but …

The Presence Of Women In The Institutional Church, Joan A. Range A.S.C. Mar 1975

The Presence Of Women In The Institutional Church, Joan A. Range A.S.C.

University of Dayton Review

Our purpose in this essay is to discuss briefly the problematic of women's presence to the institutional Church. First we will consider in general the modes of presence that women have developed in organizational patterns in our culture. Then we will turn our attention to the Church and its developing organizational patterns since the Apostolic age, and the changes brought about thereby, in the role of woman and her mode of presence to and in the Church. Finally, we will address ourselves to the present and the changing situation of women today. In order to move into this plan we …

A Christian Marriage And The Mystery Of Mary, Eileen Moorman Mar 1975

A Christian Marriage And The Mystery Of Mary, Eileen Moorman

University of Dayton Review

Does the Annunciation Event have a meaning in Christian marriage? I would say, yes. I understand it as a man and woman asking of the other the question: "Will you take all of me that I hold most precious and beautiful. protect it, cherish it, help it to become alive, so that all of creation will benefit from my being alive, because I've offered my gift of self to you?" I can see some of you smiling knowingly, probably thinking, "That's too idealistic, she's really not being realistic." I tell you it is real. It is possible. Just keep in …

Womanhood In The New Testament, Bertrand Buby S.M. Mar 1975

Womanhood In The New Testament, Bertrand Buby S.M.

University of Dayton Review

What is the meaning of woman in the New Testament? Does she have a value and dignity different from man? Is there some concern in the ethic of the New Testament community for her as a person? Is the atmosphere of the early Christian community one that differs from the clusters of other cultures which surrounded woman in the time of Jesus? If there are some values in the New Testament in relation to woman, what are they? Are all these values only seen in the exceptional treatment that Mary, the Mother of Jesus. receives from St. Luke and St. …

How The Joint Pastoral 'Behold Your Mother' Came To Be Written, Eamon R. Carroll O.Carm. Mar 1975

How The Joint Pastoral 'Behold Your Mother' Came To Be Written, Eamon R. Carroll O.Carm.

University of Dayton Review

What I am privileged to speak about with you is the result of such a postconciliar national decision, the joint pastoral of the Bishops of the United States, on the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and Mother of the Church, articulating the doctrine and the hopes of the Second Vatican Council. The episcopal letter will, it is hoped, exemplify and achieve both desirable growth and necessary accommodation in Church life, with the high-marks of self-reflection, with a call for Christian unity, and with an openness to the signs of the times-all with special respect to the Blessed Virgin Mary, …

Women In The New World, Leo T. Maher Mar 1975

Women In The New World, Leo T. Maher

University of Dayton Review

In the closing session of the Second Vatican Council, an urgent call was issued to women of the world, to exercise their Christian vocation for the salvation of mankind: "The hour is coming, in fact it has come, when the vocation of women in the world acquires an influence-an effect and power never before achieved. That is why, at this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation, women impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel can do much to aid mankind in not falling. … Our technology runs the risk of becoming inhuman. (Women are urged …

The Historical Role Of Women In America, Betty Ann Perkins Mar 1975

The Historical Role Of Women In America, Betty Ann Perkins

University of Dayton Review

In order to understand the historical role of women in America, it is necessary to very briefly look at the role of women in societies and cultures existing prior to the American experience. In the beginning, most primitive societies were matriarchal. Often this was because specific fathers were in doubt. Possibly two developments led to the overthrow of this type of society. First: the acquisition of power in the form of property; and second: the desire of fathers to be able to establish a reasonable claim to having sired specific sons and heirs to whom their property could pass. There …

Mary: The Archetype Of Mankind, Alexander Schmemann Mar 1975

Mary: The Archetype Of Mankind, Alexander Schmemann

University of Dayton Review

Virtually all Christian doctrine—the precise, conceptual formulation of the Church's faith and experience—developed as response and reaction to various mutilations and distortions of that faith, to heresies in the literal meaning of the Greek word "airesis"—choice, i.e. reduction; therefore, deformation. Hence, one of the best ways to recover the essential meaning of this or that particular doctrine is to see it precisely in relation to the "heresy" it denounced, the question it answered.

We live today in a world full of "heresies": arbitrary choices and arbitrary reductions. Not only is it truly a broken world, with a broken vision and …

Dinner Address Commemorating The 30th Anniversary Of The Marian Library, Joseph L. Bernardin Mar 1975

Dinner Address Commemorating The 30th Anniversary Of The Marian Library, Joseph L. Bernardin

University of Dayton Review

The liturgical renewal of the post-Vatican II period has sometimes given the unfortunate impression that Mary's place has been downgraded in the Church. The laudable effort to bring our devotional life into closer harmony with sound liturgical principles has not always achieved its purpose. Sometimes this has been due to misunderstanding; sometimes to a misplaced zeal which did not always make the necessary connection between the old and the new. Surely this was not intended by the Council. Both the Constitution on the Church in its eighth chapter and the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy reaffirm our traditional understanding of …
