Language, Metaphor, And Strategy Of Composition In Ulrich Plenzdorf's Novel Die Neuen Leiden Des Jungen W., Juergen K. Hoegl
University of Dayton Review
The publication of Ulrich Plenzdorf's novel Die neuen Leiden des jungen W. in 1973 has triggered considerable discussion and some official frowns in the GDR. Perhaps in anticipation of some form of censorship, Plenzdorf does not convey his critical impulses in a frontal attack in this novel. Instead, in his strategy of composition he predominantly uses indirect means. Subtle but effective literary devices-language, rhythm, metaphors, motifs-constitute an intricately interconnected perceptual network. And where his approach is direct and his critique formulated in conceptual language, he cunningly interposes the "classical," officially approved literary genius Goethe. This strategy of presentation effectively circumvents …

Thematization Of Alterity In Christa Wolf's Nachdenken Über Christa T., Gerhard F. Probst
Thematization Of Alterity In Christa Wolf's Nachdenken Über Christa T., Gerhard F. Probst
University of Dayton Review
In this article I will attempt to interpret Christa Wolf's novel Nachdenken über Christa T. (Quest for Christa T.) as a thematization of alterity. This concept will allow me to show thematic as well as structural resemblances between Christa Wolf's novel and other contemporary German fiction. I believe that similar traits could be found in other literatures. The Latin American novel — Cortazar's Rayuela (Hopscotch), for example — and the French nouveau roman seem to be characterized by an alteristic narrative strategy. The principle of alterity, however, is not limited in its function to literature and thereby to literary criticism …
Günter De Bruyn's Preisverleihung: A Gdr Novel With A Mission, Ted E. Frank
Günter De Bruyn's Preisverleihung: A Gdr Novel With A Mission, Ted E. Frank
University of Dayton Review
Established scholarly opinion in the West has come to regard Günter de Bruyn as an inconsequential GDR writer whose works follow a pattern of sentimentality or even banality. Marcel Reich-Ranicki views de Bruyn as an author of "simple Trivialliteratur," one who writes idyllic stories that have scarcely anything to do with our time. Fritz J. Raddatz sees de Bruyn's 1968 novel Buridans Esel as a mixture of philistinism and conscious subtlety that utterly fails to work. And Werner Brettschneider interprets the same novel as a harmless, open-ended tale, possessing little more than the possibility of humor. "Nichts wird heroisiert, nichts …
An Analysis Of Günter Kunert's "Schatten Entziffern", W. Clark Kenyon
An Analysis Of Günter Kunert's "Schatten Entziffern", W. Clark Kenyon
University of Dayton Review
Although Günter Kunert is probably the most well-known of living East German poets, very little scholarly study of his work has been undertaken. Since no popular critical approaches to the subject matter and style of Kunert's poetry have yet been formulated, it would be difficult to begin this essay in the familiar manner of appraising previous criticism. One is compelled, therefore, to investigate Kunert's work on some more fundamental level. In view of this situation, I intend to present a few aspects of the poetry of Gunter Kunert by means of a precise formal analysis of the structure of his …
The Politics Of Peter Huchel's Early Verse, Joseph P. Dolan
The Politics Of Peter Huchel's Early Verse, Joseph P. Dolan
University of Dayton Review
In an interview with the author of this paper, Peter Huchel was at pains to emphasize that even as a young man he had had Marxist sympathies and that Ernst Bloch had been. his „vaterlicher Freund.” In the same spirit, he tried to distance himself from the literary journal Die Kolonne by referring to its editor, Martin Raschke, as a "snob," and by explaining away his first prize in the second lyric contest of Die Kolonne as the result of a joke played on him by his friend Hans Joachim. According to Huchel, Joachim had submitted a sheaf of poems …
The Socialist Education Of Rita Seidel: The Dialectics Of Humanism And Authoritarianism In Christa Wolf's Der Geteilte Himmel, Willkie K. Cirker
The Socialist Education Of Rita Seidel: The Dialectics Of Humanism And Authoritarianism In Christa Wolf's Der Geteilte Himmel, Willkie K. Cirker
University of Dayton Review
When Christa Wolf's first novel Der geteilte Himmel was published in 1963, it precipitated within the GDR a flurry of varied and differing critical comment quite unusual for that country. The main controversy centered on the ideological message of the work which, according to some, was too vague and did not sufficiently extol the advantages of socialism in the GDR nor properly emphasize the leadership role of the Communist Party. Others retorted that it was just this subjective lyrical quality which distinguished the book from the uninspired Aufbauliteratur of the ’50s in which there had been a plethora of socialist …
