University of Dayton Review
The University of Dayton Review has long had a commitment to the work of Heinrich Böll. In 1973, the year after Böll received the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Review published its first special issue on his work (Fall, Vol. 10, No. 2). This initial special issue was followed by four more, Winter 1974 (Vol. 11, No. 2), Spring 1976 (Vol. 12, No. 2), Winter 1976 (Vol. 13, No. I), and this current issue of Summer 1985. In each case, these issues had their origin in a special session on Böll's work at the annual meeting of the Modern Language …

Böll's Short Stories Since 1977, Erhard Friedrichsmeyer
University of Dayton Review
For a writer often described as a master of the short story, Böll in recent years has published precious little in what he considers his favorite genre. And when now and again he does present us with a new short story, we welcome it with a sense of uneasy anticipation. His short stories of the last two decades, creditable though indeed they are, do not rank with the best efforts of his younger years.

Heinrich Böll In The Soviet Union: 1973-1984, Henry Glade
University of Dayton Review
1973 marks the turning point for Heinrich Böll in the Soviet Union. Up to then he was considered a member of the nomenklatura (the political and cultural elite) whose major works had been translated into Russian and into at least 15 languages of the other Soviet Republics in editions of about three million copies.

University of Dayton Review

Game Playing, Re-Entry And Withdrawal: Patterns On Societal Interaction In Billard Um Halbzehn And Fürsorgliche Belagerung , Gertrud Bauer Pickar
University of Dayton Review
Böll's novel of the late '50s Billard um halbzehn and his novel of the late '70s Fürsorgliche Belagerung invite comparison, not only because of the similarities which unite these two novels published two decades apart, but also because of the differences which the comparison reveals. The differences are all the more striking because of the overt similarities between the two works. Both novels depict family dynasties; both encompass three generations; both present a strictly confined geographic area; and both take place in a dramatically limited fictional present, in which reminiscences provide insight into events and situations from the past, which …

Continuity And Change In Heinrich Böll's Work: "Die Waage Der Baleks" And "Erwünschte Reportage", K. Eckhard Kuhn-Osius
University of Dayton Review
Probably no postwar author's name in West Germany is as closely linked to the genre of the short story or Kurzgeschichte as Heinrich Böll's, and he himself has mentioned that short stories are his favorite genre. Still. the most marked difference between Böll's early and late works is the steep decrease in his production of short stories since the 1950s. There may be many reasons for this, among them Böll's stylistic development, which seems to veer towards more complex and longer forms, and perhaps also the desire to avoid a tendency in his stories of following well-worn patterns, the same …

Heinrich Böll's Utopian Feminism, Margareta Neovius Deschner
University of Dayton Review
This article will focus on three women characters through whom Heinrich Böll has expressed his hope that a rediscovered, healed, and affirmed womanhood could in a salutary way change not only the woman-man relationship but also something very essential at the core of our society.
Auftritt Um Halbzehn? Über Den Roman "Ansichten Eines Clowns" Von Heinrich Böll, Arpad Bernath
Auftritt Um Halbzehn? Über Den Roman "Ansichten Eines Clowns" Von Heinrich Böll, Arpad Bernath
University of Dayton Review

Heinrich Böll's Fürsorgliche Belagerung: A Bloodless Novel Of Terrorism?, Charlotte W. Ghurye
University of Dayton Review
The American reviewers of Böll's novel Filrsorgliche Belagerung (1979), published in translation under the title The Safety Net (1982), appear to be under the impression that the author intended to make public his views on terrorism in the Federal Republic. Some critics appear to have misinterpreted the novel as a narrative on the destructive effects of terrorism on German society. Careful reading of the work makes it questionable whether such an interpretation is harmonious with Böll's intentions. While the plot deals with aspects of terrorism, the author's main concern is to demonstrate that overreaction to terrorism by police and press …

Introduction To The Poems Of Heinrich Böll Since 1972, Robert C. Conard
University of Dayton Review
In 1967 Heinrich Böll stated in an interview that he had published poetry under a pseudonym to test its reception on its own merit. In 1972, satisfied with the reception, he allowed a slim volume of nine poems to appear with the Colloquium Verlag under his own name. These poems with one addition reappeared in 1975 with Lamuv Verlag, accompanied by graphics from Klaus Staeck. Since then the Böll/Staeck book has been published in the Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag's popular paperback series in a licensed edition from Lamuv, which holds the copyright for all of Böll's poetry. The latest 1981 edition …

Heinrich Böll's Pacifism: Its Roots And Nature, W. Lee Nahrgang
University of Dayton Review
War in general and World War II in particular play a major role in the works of Nobel Prize-winning German author Heinrich Böll — a role so significant that some authorities view Böll's participation in World War II as the major formative experience which made him an author, and others regard war as his main theme. Although Böll contradicts these assessments, it is certainly true that he has either depicted or referred to war in most of his fiction — from the earliest short stories in the late 1940s to the novel Fürsorgliche Belagerung (1979) and the recent collection Die …

Predicting Success In High School Computer Programming, John C. Gevedon
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are great differences in performance among students taking high school programming courses, and instructors debate over what elements contribute to these differences. Some students develop logical thinking abilities and problem solving techniques, while others fail to develop skills beyond memorization of specific terms and procedures. It is not known whether these differences are causally related to the specific educational environment or student backgrounds. Without more information, the factors that actually contribute to the success of high school students in computer programming courses cannot be accurately determined. It was the purpose of this study then to isolate certain student characteristics …
