As the initial surprising effects of Latin American experimental narrative wear off, an interest in the construction of those texts as an end in itself for criticism gives way to other problems opened up by those structures. Readers blinded by the difficulties posed by ludic variations of time and attribution may have very well been mistaken in thinking that the dismantling and description of such games constitute a valid form of understanding what is at stake in the literary tradition initiated by Macedonio Fernandez, Borges and Cartazar. For at the heart of these developments lies a contempt for the formalistic …

John Felstiner's experience of Macchu Picchu, gained through the process of translating Neruda, should be instructive for North American readers not familiar with the most recent Spanish American writing. Felstiner claims to have been radically reoriented (North-South instead of East-West) by his encounter with Neruda, who fixed the ruins of the Incan fortress in the linguistic and imaginary landscape of all Americans. In a different way-as Enrico Mario Santi shows-Neruda managed to radically re-write the history of Latin America through his contact with Macchu Picchu. Alvaro Mutis and writers such as Enrique Lihn, Carlos German Belli, Alejandra Pizarnik, Jose Emilio …

Agresion Y Poesia: A Proposito De Dos Cuentos De García Márquez, Alvaro Pineda Botero
University of Dayton Review

García Márquez On The Margin Of Utopia, Peter G. Earle
García Márquez On The Margin Of Utopia, Peter G. Earle
University of Dayton Review
In García Márquez there is a utopian longing which is almost contradicted by his grim political overview. Nevertheless, in many of his novels and stories he leaves us little escapeways of hope. Remember the ending of The Autumn of the Patriarch: bells toll, rockets burst in the air and people cheer when it is discovered that the dictatorial protagonist has sneezed himself to death. There's a chance that the Colonel's renowned rooster (Nobody Writes to the Colonel) will win on the day of its great test, 45 days after the novelette's conclusion. In Aureliano Babilonia, who dies in the hurricane …
