Accounting Faculty Publications
Over the past fifteen years, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has issued numerous pronouncements designed to narrow the differences in accounting practice and thereby increase the usefulness of financial statements by making them more comparable among different enterprises. Though questions have often been raised over the years about the complex and prescriptive nature of these pronouncements, Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 33, “Financial Reporting and Changing Prices” (SFAS 33), has perhaps been the most controversial. The above statement required subject companies to generate and publish information that was radically different from that produced in accordance with conventional financial …

Behind Infanticide And Incest—Personal Aspects In The Formulation Of The Oedipus Complex, Leon Shaskolsky Sheleff
Behind Infanticide And Incest—Personal Aspects In The Formulation Of The Oedipus Complex, Leon Shaskolsky Sheleff
University of Dayton Review
One of the most intriguing aspects of the crucial years in Freud's life, at the end of the nineteenth century, when he was struggling with the initial formulation of the ideas that were to crystallise into the Oedipus Complex, is that during that very time almost all of his own children were going through their own oedipal periods. Under normal circumstances it would seem surely logical to presuppose some connection between the intellectual and emotional turmoil enveloping Freud and the happenings in his home at that time.
Corso, Kinnell, And The Bomb, Catharine F. Seigel
Corso, Kinnell, And The Bomb, Catharine F. Seigel
University of Dayton Review
Speaking this past fall at a colloquium on nuclear power at the University of Rhode Island, social critic Robert Jay Lifton bluntly insisted that in such discussions, one should not talk about "nuclear arms proliferation" or "weapons limitations," and so forth, but one should talk about The End — that, he said, is the only issue: try to imagine the end of the world as we know it. This has surely been the supreme political fact since 1945. Yet Poetry, one of the better journals for measuring poetic activity on the American scene, printed for the year 1961, 335 poems …

Time And Others In Julien Green’S Léviathan, Robert Ziegler
Time And Others In Julien Green’S Léviathan, Robert Ziegler
University of Dayton Review
For Julien Green. it was the idea of time elapsing—"[l]a pensee que notre temps, notre vie tombent au néant à mesure que l'heure s'ècoule''—that prompted him to keep his literary journal (Journal 123). Like Manuel in Le Visionnaire, who also kept a record of his day-to-day activities "pour retenir la vie au passage" (Le Visionnaire 161), Green uses writing as an attempt at self-possession, as a way for him to stop the flow of experiential time. In Léviathan the characters are similarly obsessed with the problem of time's passage and see it as an agent of inescapable dispossession. But different …
Biblical Allusion And William Cooper In James Fenimore Cooper’S The Pioneers , Michael Clark
Biblical Allusion And William Cooper In James Fenimore Cooper’S The Pioneers , Michael Clark
University of Dayton Review
In his article entitled "The Novel as a Religious Tract," William M. Hogue has identified persistent and wide-ranging allusions to Episcopalianism in the works of James Fenimore Cooper. The author of the Leatherstocking Tales, we are told, ''preached his favorite orthodoxies incessantly in the pulpit most accessible to him—(in) his fiction." As Hague's survey indicates, from early in his career until late, Cooper frequently expressed his views on Episcopalianism, most notably by "making most of his heroes and heroines Episcopalians and by having his unpleasant characters belong to the Puritan-descended denominations." But the Christian tradition is important to Cooper in …
Chivalry As Sin In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight , Ruth Hamilton
Chivalry As Sin In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight , Ruth Hamilton
University of Dayton Review
In early criticism of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight it was a commonplace that the poem was the most perfect English example of romance, celebrating and lovingly detailing chivalry—even as chivalry was nearly dead in real life and in works by other, more sophisticated writers, like Chaucer. Perhaps not until Gordon Shedd's 1967 article "Knight in Tarnished Armour" was the possibility raised that the poet's view of chivalry wasn't straightforward, wasn't simple. Yet Shedd's suggestion has largely been ignored. What I'd like to suggest is that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight contains a more wide-ranging, more serious criticism …
Memories, Dreams, Reflections: The Androgynous Dialectics Of C.G. Jung, Alfred L. Recoulley
Memories, Dreams, Reflections: The Androgynous Dialectics Of C.G. Jung, Alfred L. Recoulley
University of Dayton Review
Memories, Dreams, Reflections was a very reluctant effort on Jung's part, and it may be for this reason that the work is so genuinely alive. Jung produced other works whose very titles may seem to dictate their usage here in preference to the "memorable fantasies"; but, for me, Memories, Dreams, Reflections holds a special place in Jung's canon. I think Jung's unwillingness to bow to what readers had come to expect from "memories," his highly personal glimpses into the polar nature of existence, and his own vision of wholeness—essentially an androgynous vision—are the factors most highly significant which led me …
Coincidence, Irony, And The Theme Of The Fortunate Fall In Crime And Punishment, Donald Palumbo
Coincidence, Irony, And The Theme Of The Fortunate Fall In Crime And Punishment, Donald Palumbo
University of Dayton Review
Dostoevsky reveals through his fiction that he, like many of his most interesting characters, struggled with the question of God's existence. While he was probably never able either to abandon the idea of God emotionally or to accept it intellectually, Dostoevsky's greatest works are expressions of his attempt to reconcile this conflict. Despite the multitude of atheists who populate them and the force of their rational arguments, his novels argue the existence of God subtly but emphatically. Through them Dostoevsky attempts to overcome his personal uncertainty and achieve a whole-hearted acceptance of Christianity.
The Recognition Of Penelope: When, How, And Why, Nicholas Ayo
The Recognition Of Penelope: When, How, And Why, Nicholas Ayo
University of Dayton Review
Questions about Homer mushroom into enormous bibliographies that attest to the stature of the man and the artist. Questions about the origins in oral poetry and the redaction of these monumental Greek epics rival the revolutionary discoveries of the higher criticism of the Bible. My theme is a small question for Homeric studies but a large question for studies in the Odyssey: when, how, and why does Penelope recognize Odysseus? The meaning of her several crucial actions in Bks. 18-23 of the Odyssey will depend upon how this question is resolved. To oversimplify: If she knew the beggar was Odysseus, …
Identification With Urban Marginals: The Representation Of The Subject In Baudelaire’S Late Poetry, Anne-Marie Soucy
Identification With Urban Marginals: The Representation Of The Subject In Baudelaire’S Late Poetry, Anne-Marie Soucy
University of Dayton Review
Although the history of nineteenth-century poetry is often seen as one of growing alienation between writer and public, it would be one-sided to ignore the effort made by Baudelaire to speak of—and to—a fragmented urban community. Far from being merely subjective in orientation, nineteenth-century French poetry is often characterized by the desire to overcome subjectivity, to move from the isolated self to a more inclusive experience and audience. This orientation is evident in the centrally important conception of imaginative love as the agent of reunion between subjective and objective perspectives of human experience. It is nowhere more evident, however, than …
“Stavrogin’S Confession” And Religious Existentialism, Jeremy Smith
“Stavrogin’S Confession” And Religious Existentialism, Jeremy Smith
University of Dayton Review
The aim of this paper is to develop an interpretation of the extremely perplexing and controversial chapter of Dostoyevsky's The Devils entitled "Stavrogin's Confession." My treatment of the issues this chapter raises will be based on the work of two philosophers, Nicholas Berdyaev and Martin Buber. I will argue, on the basis of this interpretation, that the picture of Stavrogin presented in this once-suppressed chapter deepens and aesthetically complements the picture of Stavrogin that emerges in the rest of the novel.
