A Steward's Eye-Opening Easter, Julia Hall Apr 2016

A Steward's Eye-Opening Easter, Julia Hall

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

The last text message I received before I turned off my cell and hoisted my overstuffed pack over my shoulder read, “Jules- You’ll be touching God on Easter morning.” My dad had just sent me this message, as I was about to embark on a four day, three-night adventure in Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois with UD’s Outdoor Adventure Club. Those words reaffirmed my decision to skip out on the typical family Easter to go backpacking. Instead of listening to static while driving to grandma and grandpa’s house, I was listening to the crunch of hiking boots in a …

Mary's Place In Today's Church, Thomas Buffer, Dennis M. Doyle Apr 2016

Mary's Place In Today's Church, Thomas Buffer, Dennis M. Doyle

Marian Forum

Vatican II highlights the relation between Mary and the Church. What are the theological and more practical consequences of this new/old vision? Did it impact the place of Mary in the Church in liturgy, spirituality, theology? Is the Church more Marian? Are we more Marian? What could that mean? What should we learn from the past for the present and the future?

On April 8, 2016 we joined together, across the globe in real time, to listen and discuss two presentations on the subject of Mary's Place in Today's Church.

These presentations began via teleconference at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. …

Slavery And Freedom In Theory And Practice, David Watkins Apr 2016

Slavery And Freedom In Theory And Practice, David Watkins

Political Science Faculty Publications

Slavery has long stood as a mirror image to the conception of a free person in republican theory. This essay contends that slavery deserves this central status in a theory of freedom, but a more thorough examination of slavery in theory and in practice will reveal additional insights about freedom previously unacknowledged by republicans. Slavery combines imperium (state domination) and dominium (private domination) in a way that both destroys freedom today and diminishes opportunities to achieve freedom tomorrow. Dominium and imperium working together are a greater affront to freedom than either working alone. However, an examination of slavery in practice, …

Regeneration Research, University Of Dayton

News Releases

Imagine losing an eye, an arm or even your spinal cord. When we are wounded, our bodies, and those of other mammals, generally respond by sealing the wound with scar tissue. The newt, however, can repeatedly regenerate lost tissues, even as an adult. Recent research led by University of Dayton Biology Professor Panagiotis A. Tsonis and Chikafumi Chiba at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, published in the current volume of the prestigious journal Nature Communications, has shed some light on the newt’s exceptional regenerative ability and may provide further insight into regeneration in other species, including mammals.

Montgomery County Solid Waste Station: What We Need To Change, Meg Maloney Apr 2016

Montgomery County Solid Waste Station: What We Need To Change, Meg Maloney

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

As we stepped out into the parking lot, I couldn't help but notice all the environmentally friendly engineering that starkly contrasted my idea of what a Solid Waste Station would look like. The parking lot was composed of a permeable substance allowing water to be restored to the aquifer. Furthermore, the waste station had a green roof and enormous windows allowing ample sunlight into the building. It is an extremely ecocentric setting for a waste station, and I was excited to learn about the renewable solutions that Montgomery county had crafted in regards to waste.

Vocation: Curriculum/Programmatic Aids and Resources

In the Fall of 2015, the HIR Fellows for Vocation entered an exploration of the Vocation Learning Outcome outlined in the Habits of Inquiry and Reflection (2006), the document undergirding the development of the Common Academic Program. The Fellows took the following steps in developing our collective understanding of vocation, the learning outcome, the University’s current approaches to addressing vocation via curricular and co-curricular offerings, and opportunities ahead. We studied David S. Cunningham’s (2015) At This Time and in This Place: Vocation and Higher Education', discussed our collective understanding of vocation; studied Habits of Inquiry and Reflection; reviewed curricular …
