I write this piece primarily as a musicologist and amateur early music practitioner (viola da gamba player) who tries to understand the ways twentieth- and twenty-first century musicians and scholars have imagined and performed ancient music and dance. This essay emerged from my book project Performing Antiquity: Ancient Greek Music and Dance from Paris to Delphi, 1890-1935 and brings my training as a historical musicologist and dance historian to bear on issues typically of concern to archaeologists, classicists, and linguists.

About four years ago, my husband and I donated more than two-thirds of our worldly possessions to Goodwill and moved a couple of teenagers, one senior bichon, and our adventure-craving selves into a three-bedroom, one bath, 600-square-foot city apartment, complete with a three-flight walk up, no elevator required. We traded privacy for claustrophobic togetherness, mirrored vanities for color-coded shower caddies and an element-proof garage for two very weather susceptible parking spots identified by faded yellow lines. We also gained eighty or so very noisy housemates, for we had moved into a high school boys' dormitory.

Penelope is attacking her wardrobe. I can tell she has no further use for me by her expression of utter disgust. All my life I've belonged to Penelope (at least five years). She wore me in the beginning. I am full bodied and calf length, made of indigo denim with buttons down the centre front. I came with a matching shirt, but when the fashion police turned cold on double denim, she began wearing the shirt with black skirts or pants, patterned ones, coloured ones, anything but me. She now favours shorter and longer lengths.

This essay considers whether tap dance might be categorized as a kind of feet- and body-created jazz percussion rather than as a musical form of dance. Its focus is thus primarily ontological, although there is much to be said about the experience and value of tap dance that goes beyond ontology. The nature of tap dance is then investigated in historical, functional, and culturally contextual ways, after which the essay shows how the answers to the historical and functional questions are best solved by cultural and contextual considerations. This chapter proposes a theory of dance rhythm as distinct from rhythm in dance. First, it distinguishes natural and intentional rhythm, constructed from combining theories by Dewey and Margolis. It then defends this account by exploring musical and non-musical connections between rhythm and dance. It argues that dance rhythm can arise in conjunction with music, or that it can – though need not – follow music, or that it can set the musical rhythm, or be completely independent of music, though natural or internal bodily rhythms can underpin both. My work explores the capacity of cultural producers to perform “insurgent citizenship,” a term theorized by James Holsten (2008) to describe how the peripheries of social organization can propel alternative modes of civic participation, through music. I utilize Engin Isin’s performative dimension of citizenship (2017) to investigate such forms of insurgent citizenship as they evolve in social and cultural peripheries of the contemporary arts and culture industry in the city of Dresden, Germany to identify the pathways they open to socio-political participation and autonomy for refugees.

As cartels have deepened their networks, controlling the northern border states and beyond, (random) acts of violence have become an endemic crisis. This chapter will explore the ways that live improvisational performances by professional-level actors, musicians, and dancers, take place at both cognitive and sub-cognitive levels in ways that are relevant for understanding perception and appreciation of the performing arts. First, evidence from cognitive science will be used to show that improvising, as in a dance or a music jam session or a scene in theatre, may involve physical responses that occur before we are conscious of the event to which we are responding.
