Optical Switching Performance Of Thermally Oxidized Vanadium Dioxide With An Integrated Thin Film Heater, Andrew M. Sarangan, Gamini Ariyawansa, Ilya Vitebskiy, Igor Anisimov Jul 2021

Optical Switching Performance Of Thermally Oxidized Vanadium Dioxide With An Integrated Thin Film Heater, Andrew M. Sarangan, Gamini Ariyawansa, Ilya Vitebskiy, Igor Anisimov

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

Optical switching performance of vanadium dioxide produced by thermal oxidation of vanadium is presented in this paper. A 100nm thick vanadium was oxidized under controlled conditions in a quartz tube furnace to produce approximately 200nm thick VO2. The substrate was appropriately coated on the front and back side to reduce reflection in the cold state, and an integrated thin film heater was fabricated to allow in-situ thermal cycling. Electrical measurements show a greater than three orders of magnitude change in resistivity during the phase transition. Optical measurements exhibit 70% transparency at 1500nm and about 15dB extinction across a wide spectral …

Facile Fabrication And Characterization Of Kraft Lignin@Fe3o4 Nanocomposites Using Ph Driven Precipitation: Effects On Increasing Lignin Content, Frankie A. Petrie, Justin M. Gorham, Robert T. Busch, Serhiy O. Leontsev, Esteban E. Ureña-Benavides, Erick S. Vasquez Jun 2021

Facile Fabrication And Characterization Of Kraft Lignin@Fe3o4 Nanocomposites Using Ph Driven Precipitation: Effects On Increasing Lignin Content, Frankie A. Petrie, Justin M. Gorham, Robert T. Busch, Serhiy O. Leontsev, Esteban E. Ureña-Benavides, Erick S. Vasquez

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

This work offers a facile fabrication method for lignin nanocomposites through the assembly of kraft lignin onto magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) based on pH-driven precipitation, without needing organic solvents or lignin functionalization. Kraft lignin@Fe3O4 multicore nanocomposites fabrication proceeded using a simple, pH-driven precipitation technique. An alkaline solution for kraft lignin (pH 12) was rapidly injected into an aqueous-based Fe3O4 nanoparticle colloidal suspension (pH 7) under constant mixing conditions, allowing the fabrication of lignin magnetic nanocomposites. The effects of increasing lignin to initial Fe3O4 mass content (g/g), increasing in ratio from 1:1 to 20:1, are discussed with a complete chemical, structural, and …

Dpp: Deep Predictor For Price Movement From Candlestick Charts, Chih-Chieh Hung, Ying-Ju (Tessa) Chen Jun 2021

Dpp: Deep Predictor For Price Movement From Candlestick Charts, Chih-Chieh Hung, Ying-Ju (Tessa) Chen

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Forecasting the stock market prices is complicated and challenging since the price movement is affected by many factors such as releasing market news about earnings and profits, international and domestic economic situation, political events, monetary policy, major abrupt affairs, etc. In this work, a novel framework: deep predictor for price movement (DPP) using candlestick charts in the stock historical data is proposed. This framework comprises three steps: 1. decomposing a given candlestick chart into sub-charts; 2. using CNN-autoencoder to acquire the best representation of sub-charts; 3. applying RNN to predict the price movements from a collection of sub-chart representations. An …

People-First Promotion: Rallying Library Workers During Covid-19 And Beyond, Katy Kelly, Christina A. Beis, Ann Zlotnik, Maureen E. Schlangen

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

COVID-19 forced workers around the world to face the realities of closed buildings, precarious employment situations, and challenges to their well-being. This article will showcase how library workers’ resilience during COVID-19 depended on people, not buildings, and a people-first public relations strategy was employed to reveal that distinction. The authors, a team of librarians and communicators, share three pandemic-era communication stories developed to put people at the forefront of initiatives and messaging: a revamped marketing strategy for a research appointment service puts faces to the work and student support; the cancellation announcement of a beloved annual event reveals how the …

Toward Cost-Effective Residential Energy Reduction And Community Impacts: A Data-Based Machine Learning Approach, Adel Naji, Badr Al Tarhuni, Jun-Ki Choi, Salahaldin Alshatshati, Seraj Ajena

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Many U.S. utilities incentivize residential energy reduction through rebates, often in response to state mandates for energy reduction or from a desire to reduce demand to mitigate the need to grow generating assets. The assumption built into incentive programs is that the least efficient residences will be more likely take advantage of the rebates. This, however, is not always the case. The main goal of this study was to determine the potential for prioritized incentivization, i.e., prioritizing incentives that deliver the greatest energy savings per investment through an entire community. It uses a data mining approach that leverages known building …

Investigating The Effects Of A P53 Mutation And Various Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors On Glioma Progression And Therapy Resistance In Drosophila, Kaitlyn M. Alleman

Honors Theses

Gliomas, which are brain tumors that arise from glial cells, are some of the most aggressive and lethal types of tumors. These brain tumors are difficult to treat because not enough information regarding the mutations present in these tumors exists. This project studies effects of a p53 mutation on Drosophila glioma progression and then will test to see if this results in resistance to current chemotherapy. The main goal of this endeavor is to investigate the numerous defects occurring at the cellular and biochemical level in gliomas, which will give insight into why these types of tumors are so difficult …

The Author’S Words And The Editor’S Pen, A Self-Study In Editorial Decision Making, Margaret M. Cahill

Honors Theses

This study investigates the practices that professional editors use when evaluating manuscripts for publication. Specifically, I ask: 1) Which edits are the most essential to the overall development of a text? and 2) How does the editor serve as the bridge between writer and reader? In seeking answers to these questions, I apply the editorial practices for reading and manuscript development reported by professional editors to my work as an editor of one writer’s memoir manuscript currently in the process of revision. Drawing on interviews with the author and changes to the manuscript itself, I examine the role of the …
