Experiential Learning And The Revitalization Of Manufacturing Education At The University Of Dayton, Sean Cahill Nov 2025

Experiential Learning And The Revitalization Of Manufacturing Education At The University Of Dayton, Sean Cahill

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

This perspective paper explores the role of experiential learning in preparing future-ready manufacturing engineers at the University of Dayton, set against the backdrop of Dayton’s legacy as an industrial innovator and the broader national movement to revitalize domestic manufacturing. As automation, cyber-physical systems, and Industry 4.0 technologies reshape the manufacturing landscape, there is a growing need for engineers who possess both technical fluency and systems-thinking capabilities. To meet this need, the manufacturing engineering technology department implemented hands-on, integrated lab-and-lecture modules through support from the Experiential Learning Innovation Fund for Faculty (ELIFF). Grounded in Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory and constructivist learning …

Preparation, Immersion, Reflection, Assessment (Pira): A Framework For High-Impact Experiential Learning, Karen Velasquez

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

This article presents the PIRA framework—preparation, immersion, reflection, assessment—as a practical model for intentionally structuring high-impact experiential learning (EL). PIRA serves as a unifying pedagogical tool, bridging foundational frameworks in EL and institutional strategy to facilitate increased coherence across diverse types of EL. The framework’s adoption aligns EL with the University of Dayton’s core mission, advancing equity and student success through intentional design and more uniform standards. This paper examines PIRA’s conceptual foundations, details its benefits for student learning and success, and offers concrete strategies for implementation.

Characterizing The Frequency Response Of Pressure-Sensitive Paint, Charles J. Strunc Nov 2025

Characterizing The Frequency Response Of Pressure-Sensitive Paint, Charles J. Strunc

Honors Theses

Pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) enables full-field, optical pressure measurement through oxygen quenching of luminescent molecules but is limited by slow response times at high frequencies. To evaluate dynamic PSP behavior, a resonance tube system was developed in this study capable of generating standing pressure waves up to 60 kHz using a high-frequency super tweeter. Synchronized pressure transducer and high-speed optical data were analyzed in both time and frequency domains to assess PSP phase lag and frequency response. The paint accurately tracked input frequencies up to approximately 2–3 kHz, beyond which optical and electronic noise dominated. Primary noise sources included excitation laser …

Quasi-Static Electro-Mechanical Response Of Circular Dielectric Elastomer Membranes Under Dc Voltages, Nathan T. Benham Nov 2025

Quasi-Static Electro-Mechanical Response Of Circular Dielectric Elastomer Membranes Under Dc Voltages, Nathan T. Benham

Honors Theses

Dielectric elastomers have attracted significant attention because of their large voltage-induced mechanical strains, fast response times, high specific elastic energy (3.4 J/g), and strong electro-mechanical conversion efficiency. Circular dielectric elastomer membrane actuators (DEAs) have proven valuable for evaluating new elastomers, electrodes and their combinations; eliciting interesting vibratory and dynamic response; and validating new electro-mechanical constitutive models and membrane mechanics models. Despite their practical importance, experimental data quantifying the quasi-static voltage-stretch response of circular DEAs under the action of DC voltages is limited. To address this, we perform an experimental program designed to interrogate the impact of electrode diameter and membrane …

Artificial Intelligence And The Future Of Oncology Rehabilitation, Christopher M. Wilson Oct 2025

Artificial Intelligence And The Future Of Oncology Rehabilitation, Christopher M. Wilson

Oncology Rehabilitation in Practice

While the promise of AI in oncology rehabilitation is remarkable, successful adoption requires balance between enthusiasm and realism. These technologies must be thoughtfully integrated into existing workflows with safeguards for data privacy, accuracy, and clinician oversight. The goal is not to replace clinical judgment or the human connection at the heart of rehabilitation, but to amplify and augment them—restoring time, focus, and compassion to the clinical encounter. With deliberate implementation and continuous evaluation, AI can become a trusted partner in advancing the quality, accessibility, and humanity of oncology rehabilitation practice.

Magnetically Recoverable And Adsorptive Alginate Hydrogel Composite Beads Reinforced With Cellulose Nanocrystals, Corbon M. Moss, Mohammad Jahid Hasan, Monishita Deb, Sarah Watzmann, Esteban Ureña-Benavides, Erick S. Vasquez-Guardado

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 1.9 million deaths occur annually due to the consumption of contaminated drinking water, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable, biobased materials for water purification. This study reports the synthesis and characterization of magnetically responsive, alginate-based hydrogels designed for pollutant adsorption and magnetic recovery. Magnetic cellulose nanocrystals (mCNC) were produced by coprecipitating Fe3O4 nanoparticles onto cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and subsequently embedded into an alginate hydrogel matrix at two loading concentrations (0.1 and 1% w/v). The resulting mCNC–alginate hydrogels, along with CNC–alginate and pure alginate hydrogels as controls, were fabricated in both thin film and …
