Historical Interpretations Of The Formation Of Public Education For Freedpeople In Reconstruction South, Daniel C. Napoli
Historical Interpretations Of The Formation Of Public Education For Freedpeople In Reconstruction South, Daniel C. Napoli
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
I started my historiography paper by gathering and analyzing varied historical interpretations of the formation of public education in the South. These sources ranged over one hundred years from the beginning of the twentieth century to the two-thousands. These sources contradicted each other in many ways due to inaccurate and biased depictions of it from early Reconstruction historians. After analyzing the trends and shifts in historical interpretation on this topic I crafted an argument for which category of interpretation is best. This was based on many factors including historical accuracy, clarity, and level of bias.

Learning Teaching Forum
As the University of Dayton seeks to distinguish itself through curricular innovation and creating a holistic, integrated and relationship rich learning environment for our students it is evident that doing so with an equitable mind frame is the secret sauce for success. Engaging all students in a meaningful and holistic learning experience where all students participate in rich development opportunities and persist to graduation at higher rates requires a deeper understanding of the why. (ex. Why are some students not engaging? Why do some students fall through the cracks? Why are some students unsatisfied with their University of Dayton …

Prophylactic Rights: Sex Work, Hiv/Aids, And Anti-Trafficking In India, Simanti Dasgupta
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
Based on ethnographic work with Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee in Sonagachi, the iconic red-light district in Kolkata, Prophylactic Rights examines the emergence of labour rights at the intersection of HIV/AIDS and anti-trafficking. The primary disciplinary contribution of this book lies in bridging medical and legal anthropology through a corporeal understanding of sex work rights. It addresses the following questions: How does the labour rights narrative emerge through everyday negotiations with an epidemic and the law and what congeries of history, public health policies, legal regimes, and techniques of subjection and subversion impede and impel the labour movement? The book will …

Faith's Role In Patients' Approaches To Healthcare Decisions, Maeve Chawk, Colin Fitzgerald, Andrew Ganninger, Grace Sorrentino, Justina Zolikoff
Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium
This is a literature review focusing on faith’s role in breaking down financial and cultural barriers to healthcare.
Through our research and analysis, we have found that faith-based approaches to healthcare break down the barriers that deter people from seeking treatment. Although there are different types of barriers that communities face, they all prevent individuals from receiving the care they deserve. Through increased support from their faith community, individuals are more likely to seek out help without any reservation.

How Science Education Impacts The Religious Beliefs Of Students, Sahithi Kunisetty, Alexa Neal, Benjamin Ravas
Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium
This is a literature review exploring the conflict between science and religion. It seeks to understand how a science education influences a student's level of religious beliefs. Furthermore, it provides reasons as to why one would have less access to a science education, and how religion can restrict one from learning about science.

Stakeholder Perceptions Of Community Garden Features, Samantha Trajcevski
Stakeholder Perceptions Of Community Garden Features, Samantha Trajcevski
Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium
The presentation discusses the study currently being conducted on stakeholder perceptions and attitudes towards greenspaces. This is completed through the identification of different uses and features to maximize use of the space and stakeholder engagement in the community garden. To better understand stakeholder opinions, we utilized a creative qualitative research method combining photovoice and interviews/focus groups. We conducted eight in-depth semi-structured interviews and four focus groups. Multiple interviewees agreed that the Dayton View Triangle lacks access to a green space. Most believed that a garden would offer social cohesion. Understandably, most participants were concerned about who would manage the garden …

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This panel presentation will explore new forms of engagement and activism that have emerged with community transformation through social media, music, performance, and the presentation of self and identity. These changes in visual and musical landscapes have created exciting opportunities to disrupt systems and cultures of domination and oppression. This session will explore how area activists, citizens, and artists have used popular culture to interrogate and respond to anti-democratic and anti-representative initiatives in Ohio. By exploring actual music of Dayton-based artists, performance at inclusive music events (for example, For Dayton By Dayton), artwork, and social protest in Ohio, the conversation …
African Feminist Theories And The Gendered Dimensions Of Climate Change In Africa, Manase Chiweshe
African Feminist Theories And The Gendered Dimensions Of Climate Change In Africa, Manase Chiweshe
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This paper analyses how African feminist theories can provide nuanced insights into the gendered dimensions of climate change across the continent. African feminist theories provide important insights into the everyday lived experiences of women within African spaces, allowing for a contextual analysis of the impacts of climate change. There has also been a growing recognition of the need to identify gender-differentiated impacts of climate change (Tuana 2013). The main argument is not only that climate change will be experienced by men and women differently but also that women will be more severely hurt by the impacts than men (MacGregor 2010). …
Exploring Gender Budgeting To Accelerate The Realisation Of Women’S Rights In Nigeria, Eno Ekpo
Exploring Gender Budgeting To Accelerate The Realisation Of Women’S Rights In Nigeria, Eno Ekpo
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
The proliferation of gender budgeting initiatives globally has yielded a progressive understanding of the distributive impacts of responsive gender budgeting to ensure that both women and men benefit equally from public resources for inclusive development. The incorporation of providing resources in international human rights frameworks recognises the relevance of resources to drive development policies and programmes aimed at rectifying gender imbalances that disproportionately affect women and mandates the adoption of gender budgeting as a necessary step by states to translate their commitments to realising women’s rights at domestic levels. The Maputo Protocol, a pioneering African human rights instrument with extensive …

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Communities in the Tommoguiné Region of Mali are actively pursuing development despite economic challenges, insecurity, and isolation from many opportunities. Historically, the marginalization of women and girls has held back some of these efforts and denied certain rights to some of the population. Currently, a transformation of norms surrounding women’s roles in public life and of practices harmful to women and girls is taking place, inspired by a Women’s Literacy, Leadership, and Enterprise program generated through a transnational collaboration between local communities, a Malian linguistic association, and The Tandana Foundation, a Dayton-based non-profit organization. Instead of reinscribing colonial dynamics, this …

Chapter I — On Theories Of Modernization, Messay Kebede
Chapter I — On Theories Of Modernization, Messay Kebede
Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
The vast literature pertaining to development and modernity discloses philosophical questions that instigate the controversies dividing the various theories of modernization. Of these philosophical issues, the most crucial and recurrent is the question of the prime factor or mover of modernization. The reason for the philosophical issue of primacy derives from the fact that modernization involves cultural as well as socioeconomic changes. Following the philosophical distinction between the spiritual and the material, the clash between the two basic schools of idealism and materialism frames the philosophical approach around the question of knowing whether the prime cause of modernization is cultural …

Chapter Ii — Survey Of Ethiopia’S Survival: Definition And Controversies, Messay Kebede
Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
The last chapter has unraveled the close link between modernization and the emergence of a survival ethos among ruling elites of traditional societies in transition. To approach the case of Ethiopia’s modernization from the same angle of explanation, it is necessary first to make sure that some groups among Ethiopian ruling elites had shown a propensity that could be defined as a salvational will. Sure enough, any ruling elite wants to protect the social order that benefits it. However, the salvational will, as defined in the previous chapter, is less the desire to perpetuate the status quo than the will …

Teaching To Develop Perspective, Skills, Confidence, And Identity As Problem-Solving Engineers, Russell Kirk Pirlo
Teaching To Develop Perspective, Skills, Confidence, And Identity As Problem-Solving Engineers, Russell Kirk Pirlo
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The “core” of an engineering degree program typically comprises the concepts, equations, and technical skills needed, as well as their practical application to common problems of the profession. This core is then divided into the “content” that must be covered in each course. It is widely recognized, however, that successful individuals do not thrive as professionals on content alone. Thus, there is significant and increasing emphasis across higher education to “educate the whole person.” These efforts aim to develop “deep” qualities like grit, critical thinking, perseverance, learning from failure, valuing diversity, teamwork, leadership, curiosity, recognizing opportunity, creating value, and acting …

Calling All Students? Enrollment In Community-Engaged Learning Courses At A Marianist University, Molly Malany Sayre, Castel V. Sweet, Kelly Bohrer
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
‘Community’ is a pervasive concept at the University of Dayton, a Catholic, Marianist institution in Dayton, Ohio. As such, it was unknown how students who enrolled in community engaged learning (CEL) courses were different from their peers in demographic characteristics, previous experiential learning, and views of community engagement. Findings can inform CEL recruitment as well as evaluation of CEL outcomes, especially at institutions with a similar values orientation. This mixed-methods study indicates that among four semesters of students in three selected CEL courses, few differences were found with students in non-CEL control groups. One significant difference found was in racial …
