The First Annual Humanities Symposium at the University of Dayton was held on Monday, February 28, and Tuesday, March 1. 1994. The Humanities Symposium was part of "Viva Humanitas," a year-long series of programs celebrating the opening of the Jesse Philips Humanities Center in August 1993.
Beatrice And Virgil: The Dialogue Of Faith And Reason In Dante's Commedia, Eugene R. August
Beatrice And Virgil: The Dialogue Of Faith And Reason In Dante's Commedia, Eugene R. August
University of Dayton Review
In addressing the dialogue between faith and reason in Dante's Commedia, I am embarking on an ambitious task. First, my knowledge of Dante's Italian might charitably be described as "imperfect." I know just enough Italian to know that Dante is a very great poet indeed. I am all too aware, however, that my colleagues in the Department of Languages switch from one language system to another with an ease and rapidity that I can only admire but certainly not emulate. Second, however much we may speak of Dante's Commedia as a timeless classic, the poem is clearly the product of …
The Soul As Locus Of Revelation And Rationality: Faith And Reason In The Thought Of Hildegard Of Bingen, Kristina Kerscher
The Soul As Locus Of Revelation And Rationality: Faith And Reason In The Thought Of Hildegard Of Bingen, Kristina Kerscher
University of Dayton Review
Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) is a captivating character who eludes easy categorization. A self-described "poor little womanly creature" (paupercula mulier), this German Benedictine endeavored as a poet, abbess, musician, itinerant preacher, ecclesial reformer, playwright, spiritual counselor, and physician. Yet it was her mystical nature that empowered these aspects of her life. The voice of "the shadow of the living light" (her descriptive for what she understood as the source of her visions) was sanctioned by Pope Eugenius III as divinely inspired. Hildegard's connection to the voice enabled her to overcome prohibitions on women's activities, and to assert herself in political, …
Dorothy Day: "A Reason For The Faith That Is In Her", Sandra Yocum Mize
Dorothy Day: "A Reason For The Faith That Is In Her", Sandra Yocum Mize
University of Dayton Review
Dorothy Day's life could very well provide the "what if" counterpoint to Flannery O'Connor's Misfit. What if the Misfit had chosen the other path, that of belief rather than unbelief? Then Dorothy Day could very well have been one of Flannery O'Connor's mystifying protagonists who in this case held as total a commitment to Jesus as the Misfit did to "meanness." The epithet "Misfit" would remain apropos for Day, perhaps as a title of honor rather than ignominy, but nevertheless remain, because her faith in Christ evades the neat categories assumed to apply to devout twentieth century "pre-Vatican II Catholics."
A Personal Perspective On Faith, Conrad E. L'Heureux
A Personal Perspective On Faith, Conrad E. L'Heureux
University of Dayton Review
It will help me to express clearly what I want to say about faith if I first describe the general model which I use for understanding what religion is. The model involves these three clusters or configurations of phenomena and the relationships among them: 1) religious experience; 2) the forms of religious expression; 3) the human needs which are satisfied by the religious experience and forms of expression.
Defining Moments Of Faith, Judith G. Martin
Defining Moments Of Faith, Judith G. Martin
University of Dayton Review
An individual's understanding of faith and reason always develops within a community context. Unless a person is raised in a multi-cultural setting, he or she is likely to equate the notion of faith or reason with a given community's articulation of it. This was the situation in which I found myself. I was raised in a Polish Catholic family in a predominantly Catholic city and attended Catholic schools from grade one through college. For me, faith meant the Catholic faith, a gift of God that was to be expressed in one's personal life, one's ritual participation and in one's intellectual …
Faith And Reason Personally And Professionally, John A. Mcgrath S.M.
Faith And Reason Personally And Professionally, John A. Mcgrath S.M.
University of Dayton Review
It was in a world of competition and of defending God. It was in a world of an adolescent's love for the clarity in truth that I first met faith and reason in a conscious way. A section of our high school religion class was devoted to apologetics. "Apologetics" did not mean having to say I was sorry, I was assured. Rather it was the examination by a confident young Catholic of 2,000 years of Scripture, Church life and teaching for the sure "proofs" of the truths of the Catholic faith. The interplay of faith statement, God's inspired word, history, …
