Nature's Infinite Book: Stories Old And New, Pamela L. Thimmes
Nature's Infinite Book: Stories Old And New, Pamela L. Thimmes
University of Dayton Review
In the next few pages I will discuss the importance of story and myth as well as topics that are connected with humans telling stories—community, worldviews, transformation and spirituality. In that vein, what follows is more than a personal statement; it is a community of voices. My own thoughts on these topics have been influenced by the work of Thomas Berry, David Suzuki, Sallie McFague. Aldo Leopold, Miriam Therese McGillis and Jay McDaniel, so the reflections and associations presented here as "personal positions" are not new or novel, nor do the following pages represent the complexity inherent in any of …
The Place Of Nature In The Thought Of Teilhard De Chardin, Michael H. Barnes
The Place Of Nature In The Thought Of Teilhard De Chardin, Michael H. Barnes
University of Dayton Review
Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, of the Society of Jesus, had two loves. He loved God and he loved the world. Traditional Christian spirituality taught him that he should forsake his love of the world for the sake of God. But his Jesuit training also taught him to see God in all things. So Teilhard integrated his two loves by finding God in the world.

Personal Perspectives On The Relations Between Humans And Nature, Ralph R. Frasca
Personal Perspectives On The Relations Between Humans And Nature, Ralph R. Frasca
University of Dayton Review
In academe we are rarely asked for our personal perspectives. Our colleagues prefer academic perspectives. These should reflect our considered judgment given the accepted methodology and current mainstream academic thinking. A "personal" perspective implies a release from constraints that is both liberating and scary. At a younger age I might have taken advantage of this freedom by reflecting on the romantic relationship between humans and nature. At my current age, however, I am like the bird who returns to its gilded cage. My personal perspective is the perspective of my discipline. My view of the relationship between humans and nature …

Meanings Underlying Student Ratings Of Faculty, Carolyn Ridenour, Stephen J. Blatt
Meanings Underlying Student Ratings Of Faculty, Carolyn Ridenour, Stephen J. Blatt
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine how undergraduate students interpret the items on a faculty evaluation instrument. Most research on faculty evaluation is quantitative (Marsh and Bailey 1993). Our first study was also quantitative. After we produced a profile of quantitative ratings of faculty by students across all departments in our university in an earlier study, we wanted to go beneath the numbers to their meaning. We designed the present qualitative study to investigate what the items on that form meant to students.

Life's Journey And The Grapes Of Wrath , Conrad E. L'Heureux
Life's Journey And The Grapes Of Wrath , Conrad E. L'Heureux
University of Dayton Review
The central contention of this essay is that it is helpful to think of John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939) in terms of a large category of myths, legends and stories in which individuals undertake a journey or quest. This literature was studied by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1973). The title of Campbell's study reflects the fact that hundreds of stories from all over the world and from all periods of history follow a single underlying pattern which he called the "monomyth." The common paradigm is so striking that …
