Fusion Of Interpolated Frames Superresolution In The Presence Of Atmospheric Optical Turbulence, Russell C. Hardie, Michael A. Rucci, Barry K. Karch, Alexander J. Dapore, Douglas R. Droege, Joseph C. French
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
An extension of the fusion of interpolated frames superresolution (FIF SR) method to perform SR in the presence of atmospheric optical turbulence is presented. The goal of such processing is to improve the performance of imaging systems impacted by turbulence. We provide an optical transfer function analysis that illustrates regimes where significant degradation from both aliasing and turbulence may be present in imaging systems. This analysis demonstrates the potential need for simultaneous SR and turbulence mitigation (TM). While the FIF SR method was not originally proposed to address this joint restoration problem, we believe it is well suited for this …

Documents of the Office for Mission and Rector
The historical and educational context for the Characteristics of Marianist Universities is both local and global. The Society of Mary (Marianists) was founded in France in 1817 by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade. The first Marianists arrived in the United States in 1849. The reputation of the Marianists as educators in Europe led the first brothers in the United States to establish schools.
Today, the Marianist brothers and priests of the Province of the United States serve in communities and ministries from Honolulu to Puerto Rico and in Eastern Africa, India, Ireland and Mexico. In the United States, along with the …

Development Of A Methodology For Characterizing Reaction Kinetics, Rheology, And In-Situ Compaction Of Polyimide Prepregs During Cure, James Raymond Magato, Donald A. Klosterman
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
PMR-type polyimide prepregs are challenging to fabricate into high quality composites due to volatiles that are generated and must be removed in situ during processing. The current work was conducted to develop accurate, reliable, and practical characterization techniques of the prepreg rheology, volatile generation, and subsequent volatile removal from the prepreg during composite fabrication. Thermal analysis was used to characterize volatile generation, reaction rates, and rheology. A novel approach was used to measure the thickness of the prepreg in situ during vacuum bag/oven processing using a high-temperature LVDT. Experimental results are presented for the commercially available RM-1100 polyimide/carbon prepreg system, …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Seedling Planting As A Forest Restoration Technique In Temperate Hardwood Forests Impacted By Invasive Species, Michaela J. Woods, Meredith Cobb, Katie Hickle
Biology Faculty Publications
The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire; EAB) is an invasive insect that causes mortality of trees in the genus Fraxinus, creating canopy gaps that may facilitate invasion by exotic plants. Planting native tree seedlings under EAB-infested Fraxinus may accelerate succession and preclude invasive plant expansion; however, the effectiveness of this approach has not been experimentally tested. We assessed understory seedling planting of Quercus rubra, Carya laciniosa, and Juglans cinerea in EAB-infested forests, where the invasive shrub Lonicera maackii (Amur honeysuckle) was removed. We tested whether the use of plastic tree shelters (“tree tubes”) or planting season (fall versus spring) …

Taking Flight: Developing Leaders for the Common Good
Siena College recently embarked on a new strategic plan: Tradition. Transformed. 2017 - 2022. One of the five goals is "Distinctive Value; Enhance our value and brand and broadcast to all stakeholders while maximizing our Franciscan, liberal arts advantage." During this time, the college also developed five core values, one of which is compassionate leadership: We lead by putting others first, through our commitment to social justice, service with others, and concern for the poor and vulnerable. A college-wide tactic under Distinctive Value is to implement delivery of programs through student activities to advance the development of the whole person. …

The presenters will define collaborative leadership and examine its application on residence hall staffs at Catholic colleges and universities. They will share what collaborative leadership looks like in Fields Hall, an undergraduate female residence hall at the University of Portland. They will share how resident assistants (RAs) are guided to take ownership of their communities and to develop an individual sense of spirituality that they integrate into their RA roles and careers. They will reveal how these ideas link to training from the University’s residence life department that develops RAs’ self-confidence and provides skills in areas like public speaking and …

Taking Flight: Developing Leaders for the Common Good
With unprecedented levels of distress (anxiety, stress, depression, etc.) negatively impacting students’ academic performance, their ability to carry out daily activities, and their capacity to engage in meaningful relationships, the University of Dayton developed the UD Step Care Model, a visual tool to empower all members of the community to shift the culture of resiliency. The comprehensive approach to destigmatizing mental health challenges, promoting the dignity of all members of our communities, and educating students on self-help strategies reflects a holistic approach to mental health and empowers faculty and staff to guide students through conversation to broaden the perspective of …

Concussions are one of the most discussed health concerns at all levels of sport. While much of this discussion focuses on football and the National Football League (NFL), there is growing awareness in the sport community that the risks of concussions extend to head injuries in all sports. Much remains unknown about youth concussions, particularly in terms of how parents feel about concussions and youth sport safety regulations. The purpose of this study was to examine parents’ perceptions and attitudes toward youth sport concussions. Results indicated that despite increased awareness and education there remain gaps in parental knowledge of concussions …

A Computationally Efficient U-Net Architecture For Lung Segmentation In Chest Radiographs, Barath Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie

Lung segmentation plays a crucial role in computer-aided diagnosis using Chest Radiographs (CRs). We implement a U-Net architecture for lung segmentation in CRs across multiple publicly available datasets. We utilize a private dataset with 160 CRs provided by the Riverain Medical Group for training purposes. A publicly available dataset provided by the Japanese Radiological Scientific Technology (JRST) is used for testing. The active shape model-based results would serve as the ground truth for both these datasets. In addition, we also study the performance of our algorithm on a publicly available Shenzhen dataset which contains 566 CRs with manually segmented lungs …

An Introduction To Declarative Programming In Clips And Prolog, Jack L. Watkin, Adam C. Volk, Saverio Perugini
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We provide a brief introduction to CLIPS—a declarative/logic programming language for implementing expert systems—and PROLOG—a declarative/logic programming language based on first-order, predicate calculus. Unlike imperative languages in which the programmer specifies how to compute a solution to a problem, in a declarative language, the programmer specifies what they what to find, and the system uses a search strategy built into the language. We also briefly discuss applications of CLIPS and PROLOG.
