Transfer-To-Transfer Learning Approach For Computer Aided Detection Of Covid-19 In Chest Radiographs, Barath Narayanan Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie, Vignesh Krishnaraja, Christina Karam, Venkata Salini Priyamvada Davuluru Dec 2020

Transfer-To-Transfer Learning Approach For Computer Aided Detection Of Covid-19 In Chest Radiographs, Barath Narayanan Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie, Vignesh Krishnaraja, Christina Karam, Venkata Salini Priyamvada Davuluru

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic has severely impacted lives across the globe. Respiratory disorders in COVID-19 patients are caused by lung opacities similar to viral pneumonia. A Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system for the detection of COVID-19 using chest radiographs would provide a second opinion for radiologists. For this research, we utilize publicly available datasets that have been marked by radiologists into two-classes (COVID-19 and non-COVID-19). We address the class imbalance problem associated with the training dataset by proposing a novel transfer-to-transfer learning approach, where we break a highly imbalanced training dataset into a group of balanced mini-sets and …

Unhinging The Machismo Binary Through A Third Space Lens: Reframing Latinx Males Postsecondary Academic Decision-Making, Matthew A. Witenstein, Alejandro Cervantes Dec 2020

Unhinging The Machismo Binary Through A Third Space Lens: Reframing Latinx Males Postsecondary Academic Decision-Making, Matthew A. Witenstein, Alejandro Cervantes

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

This critical and conceptual analysis problematizes the machismo binary and situates it in a third space framework. It explores Latinx males’ higher education experiences and how machismo influences academic decision-making. Situating Latinx males’ college-going in the third space provides a more nuanced portrayal of their academic decision-making across diverse postsecondary settings. In doing so, the Latinx Gender Identity Development Model for Latinx Males in the Third Space is proposed and connects machismo with other domains such as marianismo, caballerismo and familismo. The proposed framework is illustrated by applying it to Latinx males across critical dimensions that impact their decision-making in …

Does The Presence Of Multiple Β-Lactamases In Gram-Negative Bacilli Impact The Results Of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Tests And Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase And Carbapenemase Confirmation Methods?, Fred C. Tenover, Caitlin M. Dela Cruz, Scott Dewell, Victoria M. Le, Isabella A. Tickler

Biology Faculty Publications

Objectives: Many multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (MDR-GNB) harbour multiple β-lactamases. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of multiple β-lactamase carriage on the accuracy of susceptibility tests and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and carbapenemase confirmation methods.

Methods: A total of 50 MDR-GNB, of which 29 carried multiple β-lactamases, underwent broth microdilution (BMD) and disk diffusion (DD) testing as well as confirmation tests for ESBLs and carbapenemases. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used for β-lactamase gene identification.

Results: Categorical agreement of BMD and DD testing results ranged from 86.5 to 97.7% for 10 β-lactam agents. BMD and DD algorithms for ESBL …

Biology Faculty Publications

The growing prevalence and diversity of carbapenemase producers among carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) isolates warrants an expansion of detection capabilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the commercially available Xpert Carba-R (Carba-R) and the research-use-only Xpert Carba-R NxG (Carba-R NxG) in a global collection of P. aeruginosa. The challenge set included 123 P. aeruginosa clinical isolates from 12 countries. Isolates were previously categorized via PCR or whole-genome sequencing. Carbapenemase classes tested include VIM, IMP, NDM, SPM, KPC, and GES. Non-carbapenemase (non-CP)-harboring isolates were also tested (negative control). Isolates were tested using the Carba-R NxG and …

Atmospheric Turbulence Study With Deep Machine Learning Of Intensity Scintillation Patterns, Artem V. Vorontsov, Mikhail A. Vorontsov, Grigorii A. Fillimonov, Ernst Polnau

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

A new paradigm for machine learning-inspired atmospheric turbulence sensing is developed and applied to predict the atmospheric turbulence refractive index structure parameter using deep neural network (DNN)-based processing of short-exposure laser beam intensity scintillation patterns obtained with both: experimental measurement trials conducted over a 7 km propagation path, and imitation of these trials using wave-optics numerical simulations. The developed DNN model was optimized and evaluated in a set of machine learning experiments. The results obtained demonstrate both good accuracy and high temporal resolution in sensing. The machine learning approach was also employed to challenge the validity of several eminent atmospheric …
