Review: 'Essays On The History Of Organic Chemistry In The United States, 1875-1955', John Alfred Heitmann Jan 1987

Review: 'Essays On The History Of Organic Chemistry In The United States, 1875-1955', John Alfred Heitmann

History Faculty Publications

While scholars perhaps will never agree on what makes our modern civilization different from those that preceded it, it is most certain that the rise of organic chemistry and the new synthetic world that was created by this discipline was integral to this transformation. Organic chemists, working within the theoretical framework of structural and physical concepts, have provided mankind with a dazzling array of products. These new substances and materials have formed the basis of chemical and pharmaceutical industries that not only improved the quality of life but also contributed to the unprecedented prosperity of our present-day world.

Institutionalized Sexism Against Men, Frederick L. Peterson Dec 1986

Institutionalized Sexism Against Men, Frederick L. Peterson

University of Dayton Review

It will probably be at least another 50 years before the "gender health gap" is recognized as a national problem of significant priority. The fact that men are dying an average of eight years earlier than women does not seem to concern anyone except a few men's rights activists. The Surgeon General or the Secretary of Health and Human Services do not seem to be upset. Neither have I heard of anybody planning on running for office on the “gender health gap plank.” Oh well, maybe 50 years is being too optimistic. After all, we're only men (disposable). I believe …

The Uterus As Economic Device: A Lesson For Young American Men, James A. Kruse Dec 1986

The Uterus As Economic Device: A Lesson For Young American Men, James A. Kruse

University of Dayton Review

Literature and the media frequently imply that men are a powerful, independent class of autonomous leaders. The women's movement has attempted to thrust its members into this illusory class while maintaining significant status/preferential treatment for women. While society perceives women as being freed of restrictive roles to gain greater parity with men, we must also recognize that men's gender-role pigeonhole is as restrictive as at any time in history. The stereotype prevails: men are providers.

Revising Our Myths Of Masculinity, William G. Doty Dec 1986

Revising Our Myths Of Masculinity, William G. Doty

University of Dayton Review

The ways in which perceptions of gender are shaped are direct reflections of the worldview and hence the ethos (system of values) of a particular culture. Worldview is seldom made explicit in terms of "do this" or "do that" but it is part of the common sense that undergirds the acceptable parameters of behaviors and ideals and that shapes the public languages and imagery of a culture. Worldviews provide the models of social expressions of values and aspirations when they foreground this or that type of figure: more or less militaristic, more or less self-centered, more masculine or more feminine, …

Some Images And Reflections Of Fathers In The Popular Media: Fallacy, Fiction, Fantasy, Fact, Stephen D. Grubman-Black Dec 1986

Some Images And Reflections Of Fathers In The Popular Media: Fallacy, Fiction, Fantasy, Fact, Stephen D. Grubman-Black

University of Dayton Review

What are the images of fathers in the popular media? Certainly we have seen more "father involvement" in advertising products in magazines and on television; we have observed fathers in comic strips and on television. Have any of the projected images changed, and do these images reflect valid shifts in the images of fathers in our society? I have selected Fein's three historical views of fathering as a framework for this discussion. The traditional perspective is characterized by the aloof and distant father. The second perspective is the modern, which is concerned with child outcome variables of sex-role identity development, …

Language And Male Identity: Friends Or Enemies?, Frank S. Zepezauer Dec 1986

Language And Male Identity: Friends Or Enemies?, Frank S. Zepezauer

University of Dayton Review

Three girls giggled at the back of my English class when Duane finally spoke. Seventeen years old, a varsity halfback and black, he had responded after a bashful pause to the question: "What assertions do you find most important?" He replied, "It takes more to make a man than to be born male."
