A Writing Process Handbook For Secondary English Teachers, Beth Ann Needler Huffman Jan 1988

A Writing Process Handbook For Secondary English Teachers, Beth Ann Needler Huffman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A group of teachers was asked the question "Why do people write?" There was a long pause, and the question was rephrased: "What do you write?" With this, a few tentative responses began with "I write letters," "I make lists for grocery shopping and things to do," and "I keep a diary." These triggered further examples: writing thank-you notes, invitations, messages, filling out forms, journals and for pleasure. When asked "Why do you write in your capacity as teachers?," the response came quickly: "to produce lesson plans, " "reports for the principal," "making out tests and experience charts" (Holdzum, Reed …

Immortality And The Shape Of A Poet’S Career, Jane Donahue Eberwein Dec 1987

Immortality And The Shape Of A Poet’S Career, Jane Donahue Eberwein

University of Dayton Review

Someone confronted me once with an all-purpose generalization he had learned somewhere about poetry: all poems are about death. I, for my part, had supposed that many of them focused on life-in all its dizzying variety. To some extent, however, I had to admit that he had some of the greatest poets on his side. Many have claimed that poems exist as their creators' assault on their own mortality. Poems may be about any number of topics, but all serve a similar purpose. They defy death. "Not marble, nor the gilded monuments/ Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme," Shakespeare …

'What Fresh Hell …?' Cultus In Dickinson Garland, Piaf And Weil, James M. Hughes Dec 1987

'What Fresh Hell …?' Cultus In Dickinson Garland, Piaf And Weil, James M. Hughes

University of Dayton Review

Dorothy Parker created a heroine who responded to the ringing of her doorbell, "What fresh hell can this be?" In a sense, Parker's question suggests the cultic appeal of women otherwise as diverse as Emily Dickinson, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, and Simone Weil. Indeed, Dickinson's epigrammatic couplet, "Parting is all we know of heaven,/ And all we need of hell," somehow describes the dilemma all four women confronted for their variously "admiring Bog[s]." In 1938, Simone Weil wrote a letter to Georges Bernanos on the occasion of the latter's "Les Grandes Cimetieres Sous la Lune," an account of France's offensive …

Aircrew Training Devices: Utility And Utilization Of Advanced Instructional Features (Phase Iv–Summary Report), Donald J. Polzella, David C. Hubbard, James E. Brown, H. Craig Mclean

Psychology Faculty Publications

Modern aircrew training devices (ATDs) are equipped with sophisticated hardware and software capabilities, known as advanced instructional features (AIFs), that permit a simulator instructor to prepare briefings, manage training, vary task difficulty/fidelity, monitor performance, and provide feedback for flight simulation training missions. The utility and use of the AIF capabilities of Air Force ATDs were explored by means of a survey of 534 simulator instructors from Air Training Command, Military Airlift Command, Strategic Air Command, and Tactical Air Command training sites. The primary purpose of the survey was to provide a database that could be used in defining the requirements …
