From Dream To Nightmare: Political Images Of The Usa In German 20th Century Writings, Wilfried Malsch
University of Dayton Review
Already in the 17th century the establishment of Germantown in the vicinity of Philadelphia attested to North America as an asylum for those Germans persecuted for political or religious reasons. As recently as during the Nazi period it served as the place of refuge for those who were again politically persecuted mainly for reasons of race. Also, America has always provided a haven for Germans leaving their homeland for economic or personal motives.
