ETHOS Technical Reports
The team arrived at the host foundation, Familias Especiales, on Monday, May 30th, and spent a total of 10 weeks working with the organization on a variety of projects. Initially tasked with assisting the maintenance crew on everyday maintenance needs, the ETHOS students progressively expanded their responsibilities. While familiarizing themselves with the maintenance crew at the wheelchair workshop, the students also engaged in project to create a startup plan for a community farmer’s market. After submission of the proposal, initial work began on reaching out to the special needs families in the various neighborhoods of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Along with representatives …

ETHOS Technical Reports
The ETHOS team travelled to Huehuetenango, Guatemala for 10 weeks during the summer of 2016, where they worked and lived in a youth ranch located in the village of Chinaca. Finca Juvenil is a working boys ranch that houses around 20-25 boys at any given time that come from abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Mark Wakefield, working through Zona Juvenil Youth Organization, is the primary caregiver, and creates a positive home environment for these troubled children that have been left behind by the court system and family. The team contributed to many different projects throughout their immersion, but the main two …

All In The Game: Communitarianism And 'The Wire', Chad Painter
All In The Game: Communitarianism And 'The Wire', Chad Painter
Communication Faculty Publications
Communitarian ethicists argue that social identity is formed by community relationships, emphasizing the connection between an individual and his or her community. News organizations are part of that community. Indeed, journalism only functions properly in terms of the public and public life, and as part of a larger community. This textual analysis study focused on the breakdown of the fictional Baltimore community depicted in the television series The Wire. Five institutions—the police force and justice system, the labor force, local and state politicians and government, the educational system, and the daily newspaper—have failed, and, in turn, the city is …

Extrinsic or pseudo-chiral (meta)surfaces have an achiral structure, yet they can give rise to circular dichroism when the experiment itself becomes chiral. Although these surfaces are known to yield differences in reflected and transmitted circularly polarized light, the exact mechanism of the interaction has never been directly demonstrated. Here we present a comprehensive linear and nonlinear optical investigation of a metasurface composed of tilted gold nanowires. In the linear regime, we directly demonstrate the selective absorption of circularly polarised light depending on the orientation of the metasurface. In the nonlinear regime, we demonstrate for the first time how second harmonic …
Teaching The Common Good In Business Ethics: A Case Study Approach, Mark Ryan
Teaching The Common Good In Business Ethics: A Case Study Approach, Mark Ryan
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This paper addresses the instructional challenges of teaching business ethics in a way shaped by Catholic Social Teaching (CST). Focusing on the concept of the Common Good in CST, I describe my use of a case narrative in classroom instruction to help students understand the concept of the Common Good and to perceive the variety of ways businesses can serve or undermine the Common Good in a small city. Through these pedagogical explorations, I illustrate the distinctive vision of business ethics that flows from CST.

Memory errors such as buffer overruns are notorious security vulnerabilities. There has been considerable interest in having a compiler to ensure the safety of compiled code either through static verification or through instrumented runtime checks. While certifying compilation has shown much promise, it has not been practical, leaving code instrumentation as the next best strategy for compilation. We term such compilers Memory Error Sanitization Compilers (MESCs). MESCs are available as part of GCC, LLVM and MSVC suites. Due to practical limitations, MESCs typically apply instrumentation indiscriminately to every memory access, and are consequently prohibitively expensive and practical to only small …
