Realizing Catholicism: Faith, Learning, And The Future, Walter J. Ong

Marianist Award Lectures

Father Ong gives a insightful talk on the relation of the Church's Tradition in comparison to the ideas of Romanticism, the mentality of change in America, the development of technology, and the importance of the past to guide the way into the future. Narratives For A Post-Heroic Age: Peter Bichsel’S Short Prose, Arnd Bohm Jul 1988

Narratives For A Post-Heroic Age: Peter Bichsel’S Short Prose, Arnd Bohm

University of Dayton Review

The figure of Wilhelm Tell casts a long shadow. and not only over Swiss or German literature, for Tell represents the possibility of heroism in the modern era. Tell is the archetypal modern hero who incorporates divine qualities—boundless courage, amazing skills, penetrating wisdom—in the body of a humble, non-aristocratic person. He is the end of a declension traced by Walter Rehm many years ago in his article on "Romisch-Franzosischer Barockheroismus und seine Umgestaltung in Deutschland." Rehm credited Lessing with completing the transformation of the older heroic type based on Roman stoic traditions and the neo-stoic revival into the humanized heroes …

Review: 'Essays On The History Of Organic Chemistry In The United States, 1875-1955', John Alfred Heitmann Jan 1987

Review: 'Essays On The History Of Organic Chemistry In The United States, 1875-1955', John Alfred Heitmann

History Faculty Publications

While scholars perhaps will never agree on what makes our modern civilization different from those that preceded it, it is most certain that the rise of organic chemistry and the new synthetic world that was created by this discipline was integral to this transformation. Organic chemists, working within the theoretical framework of structural and physical concepts, have provided mankind with a dazzling array of products. These new substances and materials have formed the basis of chemical and pharmaceutical industries that not only improved the quality of life but also contributed to the unprecedented prosperity of our present-day world.

Literature And Rite, Thomas J. J. Altizer Oct 1980

Literature And Rite, Thomas J. J. Altizer

University of Dayton Review

It has become a virtually established doctrine among both literary and religious scholars that myth and ritual are one and the same thing, the apparent difference between them deriving from the disjunctive power of an analytic mind beholding an originally organic and unitary phenomenon. Efforts to effect a real distinction between myth and rite are therefore declared to be fallacious. whether these arise from an attempt to assign a chronological priority to one or the other. or to apprehend either in an isolated and truly distinctive form. In Christian theological terms. this doctrine would appear to have a Catholic form. …

Dayton And The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, George Ruppell S.M. Jun 1976

Dayton And The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, George Ruppell S.M.

University of Dayton Review

Even today some people wonder why Dayton, Ohio is called the home of aviation and the mention of McCook, Wright and Patterson fields seems like another mystery. Even the news media before 1910 missed the big story. In Dayton the two sons of Bishop Milton Wright, Wilbur and Orville, bicycle builders and repairmen, thought that they could fly with an engine, and at the same time there was Samuel P. Langley, the head of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., doing the same thing. The Dayton boys corresponded with everyone they thought would have some experience with flying. Octave Chanute …
