School-Based Services For Traumatized Refugee Children, Dana Doran-Myers, Susan C. Davies Oct 2009

School-Based Services For Traumatized Refugee Children, Dana Doran-Myers, Susan C. Davies

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

In 1991, civil war raged in Somalia and the country’s infrastructure began to disintegrate. Since then, millions have fled the violence and instability. Many Somali refugees have settled in the United States; Ohio now has the second larg- est settlement of Somali refugees in the country. Most of these refugees reside in the Columbus area, where numerous out- reach services have been developed. The Somalis are one of many refugee popula- tions that have enrolled children in Ohio schools. In such cases, there is often little or no warning of the children’s arrival and thus little time to prepare a …

Bolivia: Novel Rocket Stoves, Mike Naleid, Erik Reiersen Sep 2009

Bolivia: Novel Rocket Stoves, Mike Naleid, Erik Reiersen

ETHOS Technical Reports

Upon arrival in Cochabamba on May 17th 2009, Mike Naleid and Erik Reiersen primarily took on the task of two large projects during their stay, both dealing with the design of new wood burning ecological stoves. Before leaving for CEDESOL in May, they were in contact with David Whitfield and briefly discussed his ideas for a new rocket stove that would be used for making chicha, a native drink of the Andes Mountain regions. Considering the pot size for a typical batch of chicha is around 500L, the design of the stove consisted of the same principles for a small …

ETHOS Technical Reports

University of Dayton students Dan Petit and Mike Braman travelled to Pondicherry, India during the summer of 2009 to volunteer at Prakti Design Lab through the Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities of Service Learning (ETHOS) program within the school of engineering. During their stay in India, Mike and Dan completed two primary projects. The second project they completed was the construction of four mud stoves modeled after designs used in Mauritania and Benin. Tests were going to be conducted on …

Peru: Setting Up A Proxy Server, Kenneth Stapp

ETHOS Technical Reports

During the ten week period of May 31 through August 10, Kenneth Stapp volunteered at the Instituto Chaminade Marianistas in Callao, Peru as part of the ETHOS program at the University of Dayton. During this time the student provided technical support with the maintenance of the school’s computers and successfully deployed a proxy server for the school’s laboratories using the Linux operating system. This required the installation and configuration of the firewall and network routing using the Iptables of the free and open-source Linux, and the configuration of the network services of DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol), bind (a domain …

Nicaragua: Solar Power, Wind Power, And Paper Recycling, James M. Hoffman, Timothy S. Raffio

ETHOS Technical Reports

The ETHOS immersion with Suni Solar lasted ten weeks during the summer of 2009 with the intended focus of solar voltaic system installation. While some time was spent on installation of these systems in northern Nicaragua, more was devoted to other minor projects performed in Managua, Nicaragua. Many different aspects of renewable energy and related technology were examined, ranging from solar and wind electrical generation to using solar thermal power for air conditioning.

Nicaragua: Pressure Vessel Solar Autoclave, Maria Fullenkamp, Daniel Hensel, Erin Sutton Aug 2009

Nicaragua: Pressure Vessel Solar Autoclave, Maria Fullenkamp, Daniel Hensel, Erin Sutton

ETHOS Technical Reports

One specific possible application that has been looked at in-depth for the solar cooker is the possibility of a solar autoclave. This is being researched at UD. The solar autoclave is a solar cooker that can heat and sterilize medical equipment. The possibility of a solar autoclave is very exciting. With a solar autoclave a medical institution without electricity can sterilize their medical equipment. At UD the structure of the solar autoclave is being perfected. Hopefully the end model will be effective and practical for people in developing countries with limited resources to use. If successful the solar autoclave will …

Cameroon: Catching And Storing Water, Brian Baker, Mark Ewalt, Ben Simcik

ETHOS Technical Reports

Three civil engineering students from the University of Dayton travelled to the village of Boa Bakundu in rural Cameroon, West Africa in summer 2009. The students ventured to Cameroon as part of the University’s Engineers in Technical and Humanitarian Opportunities of Service-learning (ETHOS) program. Over a two month period the students worked hand-in-hand with villagers and a local engineer to realize the goal of clean piped water for the village. The engineers conducted surveys, dug trenches, placed pipe, tested the system, and created an estimate for the next phase of the project while living in Boa Bakundu. The project was …

Feminist Perspectives On Rape, Rebecca Whisnant Jul 2009

Feminist Perspectives On Rape, Rebecca Whisnant

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Although the proper definition of rape is itself a matter of some dispute, rape is generally understood to involve sexual penetration of a person by force and/or without that person's consent. Rape is committed overwhelmingly by men and boys, usually against women and girls, and sometimes against other men and boys. (For the most part, this entry will assume male perpetrators and female victims.)

Virtually all feminists agree that rape is a grave wrong, one too often ignored, mischaracterized, and legitimized. Feminists differ, however, about how the crime of rape is best understood, and about how rape should be combated …
