India: Implementing Solar To Electrify Villages, Timothy Hartnett, Mary Ellen King
ETHOS Technical Reports
This past summer, two north eastern Indian Jesuit communities were transformed from electrically starved societies to neighborhoods producing and storing their own power, harnessing the potential of solar technology. In addition to these installations, a rice patty farming village was taught the principles of electricity, troubleshooting electronics, and proper techniques for establishing a profitable business recharging and distributing handheld solar lanterns. The students proved to be assets during installations and were able to apply the University of Dayton’s Electrical Engineering program circuitry teachings in a desolate area just below the Nepali border. The projects were determined to be successful as …

Malawi: Classroom Construction, Solar Water Pump, And Rocket Stove, Ryan Arling, Kelli Schimmoelller, Mark Abram
ETHOS Technical Reports
For a ten week period, Ryan Arling, Mark Abram, and Kelli Schimmoeller worked on various projects in Malawi, Africa. The main project was the design and construction of a classroom building for Bawa Orphan Care Centre using local materials and labor. The school project relied upon the very limited availability of materials in a developing country. The project was completed, except for the iron sheets of the roof, which will be installed when funding becomes available.
A second project involved the diagnosis of an existing solar-powered water pump system that once pumped water to the hilltop of Sangilo Village, including …

Guatemala: Water Purification And Related Projects, Jennifer Dodaro, Claire Ellerhorst, Dan Kemlage
ETHOS Technical Reports
The engineering team travelled to the small town of Comitancillo, Guatemala for the summer to work with the local organization AMMID for community improvements. The major projects of the team included development of a water filtration project using ceramic filters, water deposit construction, and attempts to develop an existing design for a manual, low-tech PVC water pump. After much research, it is still undetermined whether or not a water filtration project is feasible – more groundwork needs to be done regarding collection and distribution of project funds, organization of materials and other resources needed for filter fabrication, and overall business …

Brazil: Solar Cookers And Pv In Amazon Rainforest, Phil Clauda, Michael Zimmerman
ETHOS Technical Reports
During the summer of 2011 two University of Dayton engineering students lived in Porto De Moz, Para, Brazil. This community is located on the Xingu River in the Amazon Rainforest. An organization called the Xingu Mission worked with the students to identify and execute an engineering based project to bring appropriate technology to the region. A survey of the region’s socio-economic condition suggested that building solar ovens could be a viable cost savings project for people in the region. A solar oven was prototyped using local materials and tested for its ability to heat up food. The solar oven reached …

Guatemala: Improving Water Supplies, Christopher Denzinger, Kristen Crum
ETHOS Technical Reports
Guatemala is a Central American country with a long history dating back to the Mayan civilization. Despite such a long history, the country continues to have a lack of sufficient and clean water supply for its people, especially in rural areas. During the summer of 2011, two students from the University of Dayton travelled to the small village of Las Conchas, Guatemala to work on rain water catchment systems for the village. Two systems were constructed in the village of Las Conchas: one for a local school and one for the guest house. As well, one system was constructed in …

Positively Biased Appraisals In Everyday Life: When Do They Benefit Mental Health And When Do They Harm It?, Erin M. O'Mara, James K. Mcnulty, Benjamin R. Karney
Psychology Faculty Publications
To promote optimal mental health, is it best to evaluate negative experiences accurately or in a positively biased manner? In an attempt to reconcile inconsistent prior research addressing this question, we predicted that the tendency to form positively biased appraisals of negative experiences may reduce the motive to address those experiences and thereby lead to poorer mental health in the context of negative experiences that are controllable and severe but lead to better mental health in the context of controllable negative experiences that are less severe by promoting positive feelings without invoking serious consequences from unaddressed problems. In 2 longitudinal …

Creative Learning For Challenging Times: The Promise And Peril Of Risk, Michele M. Welkener
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
We are in an unprecedented time when it comes to the world’s complexity—never has the need been greater for students to be prepared to think for themselves and act creatively to solve perplexing problems. As an artist, faculty member and administrator in higher education, faculty developer, and researcher of creativity in college students, I am passionate about creating environments where students can exercise such skills. In the art culture, risk, experimentation, exploration, and even failure are expected routes that lead to finding one’s own style, voice, and signature statement. My awareness of these expectations first began to intensify as I …

The Antislavery Judge Reconsidered, Jeffrey M. Schmitt
The Antislavery Judge Reconsidered, Jeffrey M. Schmitt
School of Law Faculty Publications
It is conventionally believed that neutral legal principles required antislavery judges to uphold proslavery legislation in spite of their moral convictions against slavery. Under this view, an antislavery judge who ruled on proslavery legislation was forced to choose, not between liberty and slavery, but rather between liberty and fidelity to his conception of the judicial role in a system of limited government. Focusing on the proslavery Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, this article challenges the conventional view by arguing that the constitutionality of the fugitive act was ambiguous; meaning that neutral legal principles supported a ruling against the fugitive act …
