Familiar Strangers: International Students In The U.S. Composition Course, Elena Lawrick, Fatima Esseili
English Faculty Publications
Many will recognize this sketch of new international undergraduates at a U.S. university: Excited. Jet-lagged. Late to class because they got lost on a big campus. Overwhelmed by myriad things to do on the first days of the semester. Confused by the English language that sounds so different. Thrown into a first-year writing course instrumental to their academic success.

Oncology Section Edge Task Force On Prostate Cancer Outcomes: A Systematic Review Of Clinical Measures Of Strength And Muscular Endurance, Mary Insana Fisher, Claire Davies, Genevieve Colon, Hannah Geyer, Lucinda Pfalzer
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Background: Strength deficits are a common morbidity following treatment for prostate cancer. Accurate assessment of strength and muscular endurance following prostate cancer treatments is essential to identify deficits and plan rehabilitation.
Purpose: To identify strength and muscular endurance outcome measures that possess strong psychometric properties and are clinically useful for examination of men treated for prostate cancer.
Methods: Multiple electronic databases were searched for articles published after 1995. Studies of tools used to assess strength and muscular endurance were included if they reported psychometric properties, were clinically feasible methods, performed on adults, and published in the English language. Each outcome …

Humility, Otherness, And Immersion: Reflections On Traveling In South America, Tereza M. Szeghi
Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar
This chapter addresses the nature of academic travel and some of the professional and personal dividends the 2013 University of Dayton Global Education Seminar trip to Argentina and Peru offered. It examines the power dynamics involved when entering unfamiliar nations and spaces in the interest of research, along with the shifting nature of identity in the context of such travel. It suggests that the lines between academic travel and tourism are fluid and contingent, and asserts that one of the merits of engaging in this form of travel (among others) is that it invites self-awareness about one’s place in the …

Lessons Through The Lens: Some Thoughts On Travel--Prompted By Photographs By Susan Wawrose, Susan Wawrose
Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar
Travel photographs preserve memories and prompt recollections. They can be intensely personal, but even so themes and genres, familiar to all travelers, can be identified in any individual's collection. This photo essay relies on photographs from a faculty trip to Argentina and Peru as prompts for reflection on the nature of travel and return. It offers a photogenic perspective of the experiences in those two countries.

Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar
During the visit to the Colegio Santa Maria a symposium took place on the subject of bullying. Speakers at the symposium included Treavor Bogard, Maria Eugenia Orihuela, Franco G. Chiappo, Clever Serrano, and Julius Amin. The articles in this section were presented by Serrano, Chiappo, and Orihuela. The symposium attracted a large audience and participation was very good. Perspectives on bullying in South America and the US were presented. It became clear that bullying was a universal problem and required both local and universal solutions.

Reflections On Five Schools: Education And Social Justice, Kathryn Kinnucan Welsch
Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar
During the 2012 – 2013 academic year, seven faculty engaged in reading, reflection, and conversations with themselves and others as part of the Global Education Seminar, a faculty development program designed to support intercultural and global initiatives. The seminar culminated in a three-week trip to Argentina and Peru, during which the cohort visited schools, universities, and the streets of Buenos Aires and Lima. The stories of five schools, some affluent, some located in the midst of poverty, offer a window into the intersection of education and social justice. The stories offer food for thought around three themes: 1) social justice …

Philosophical Ruminations On Political Tourism, Ernesto Rosen Velásquez
Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar
In my piece I reflect on a few aspects of our cohorts in-country- experience in some regions of Argentina and Peru. In particular issues of political sensibilities and spontaneous political mobilization are discussed. Some observations about different senses of what a free university might potentially mean are also noted. Furthermore, as a way of framing different kinds of activities a distinction between two kinds of projects are made: projects that follow a logic of inclusion and projects that recognize alterity. These two kinds of projects are tied respectively to two conflicting views of the good life: vivir mejor (living better) …

Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar
Embarking on a year outside one’s own native culture challenges, stretches, and inspires. A year in Peru offered much to reflect on and share. This unique culture offers great diversity within its borders and in the midst of the variety of languages, dances, and foods is one of the ‘7 Wonders of the World’- Machu Picchu. In this spirit- the entry captures ‘7 Wonders of the World’ and ‘7 Momentous Experiences’ to honor a yearlong enculturation experience. In the end, it was a year marked by many transformative experiences.

Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar
The Global Education Seminar offered opportunities to faculty to experience life in another culture with hopes of returning to campus to educate colleagues and students. This article argues that travels to Argentina and Peru accomplished some of that objective. Among the educational aspects, the experience addresses the question: “what does it mean to be black in those countries?” The conclusion was revealing in several ways, and among them was that racism was displayed in different ways in different societies. Additionally, the experience helped to reinforce the differences between cultural immersion and tourism. In the end the experience enriched participants’ knowledge …

About the book: This book provides original essays that suggest ways to engage students in the classroom with the cultural factors of American literature. Some of the essays focus on individual authors’ works, others view American literature more broadly, and still others focus on the application of culturally based methods for reading. All suggest a closer look at how ethnicity, culture and pedagogy interact in the classroom to help students better understand the complexity of works by African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos and several other sometimes overlooked American cultural groups.

Jewish Culture And Literature In England, Miriamne Ara Krummel
Jewish Culture And Literature In England, Miriamne Ara Krummel
English Faculty Publications
The story of how the medieval English Jews lived their lives in eleventh-, twelfth-, and thirteenth-century England intersects with the realities of the Jews' historical situation. Thinking about the contingent realities of Jewish lives brings us to the Christian community's view of Jews and the Jews' own view of themselves and how the Jews themselves navigated the fraught culture of medieval England. A powder keg, of sorts, resulted after the Normans claimed the seats of power in 1066. This combustible site that was medieval England in the eleventh century involved the English (that is, the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and other …

Cohesion And Perceived Proficiency In Ita Oral Communication Across Engineering And The Sciences, Jennifer Haan
English Faculty Publications
International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) often require additional instruction because their speech is not easily understandable. This lack of perceived proficiency may be attributable to mistakes in sentence level grammar or pronunciation, but may also be affected by discourse level structures including overall organization and coherence of talk. This chapter examines spoken data from an ITA proficiency test to better understand the relationship between cohesion-the linguistic property used to build coherence-and perceived comprehensibility of ITAs.
The study analyzes the use of cohesive ties (such as pronouns and conjunctions), across different proficiency levels in order to characterize and describe how ITAs at …

This chapter presents selected findings from our study of a well-established ESL writing program at a U.S. university with a large population of international undergraduate students. The study was conducted in all 13 writing sections. The instruments included demographic data from university registrars; one instructor survey, administered at the end of the semester; and two student surveys, one administered at the beginning of the semester and one at the end. The instructor survey response rate was 100% (13 teachers); the student survey response rates were 82.5% (161 students) and 88% (171 students), respectively.
The reported findings inform five areas: an …

Graduate Preparation Of School Psychologists In Serving English Language Learners, Morgan J. Aldridge, Elana R. Bernstein, Susan C. Davies
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the training practices of NASP accredited graduate programs in school psychology with regard to best practices in working with English Language Learners (ELLs). Training directors of school psychology programs were surveyed regarding the amount of time and the extent of instruction they provided their school psychology graduate students on the topic of ELLs. School psychology interns were also surveyed regarding both their current knowledge about serving ELLs and their perceived preparedness to serve ELLs. Results indicated that school psychology programs are not adequately preparing graduate students to serve the growing population of …

Bits Of Belonging: Information Technology, Water, And Neoliberal Governance In India, Simanti Dasgupta
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
India’s global success in the Information Technology industry has also prompted the growth of neoliberalism and the re-emergence of the middle class in contemporary urban areas, such as Bangalore. BITS of Belonging shows that this economic shift produces new forms of social inequality while reinforcing older ones. The study investigates this economic disparity by looking at IT and water privatization to explain how these otherwise unrelated domains correspond to our thinking about citizenship, governance, and belonging.
The ethnographic study in this book shows how work and human processes in the IT industry intertwine to meet the market stipulations of the …
A Member Of No Community? Theology After Wittgenstein, Brad Kallenberg
A Member Of No Community? Theology After Wittgenstein, Brad Kallenberg
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The study of Wittgenstein has spawned a new sort of Christian theology. A growing list of theologians have discovered in Wittgenstein a therapy for conceptual confusion and tips for how to go on, not only in religious faith and practice, but also in the practice of theology as an academic discipline. This is not to say that such thinkers have succeeded in turning Wittgenstein into an instrument of apologetics or that Wittgenstein has “delivered” them from the grip of their own religious particularity. No; they have learned from Wittgenstein the skill of silence. Their theology, like Wittgenstein’s philosophy, comes to …
Practicing To Aim At Truth: Theological Engagements In Honor Of Nancey Murphy, Ryan Newson, Brad Kallenberg
Practicing To Aim At Truth: Theological Engagements In Honor Of Nancey Murphy, Ryan Newson, Brad Kallenberg
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Well-meaning evangelicals unfamiliar with Nancey Murphy’s philosophical theology frequently worry that her work in philosophy of mind has the effect of depriving us of our souls. When such an objection is voiced after a speaking engagement, Murphy’s “reassurance” is predictable: “Don’t worry! There is nothing to be lost; we never had souls to begin with!”
Underneath her wry reply is a deep concern that philosophical confusion about “having a soul” is seriously undermining Christian discipleship. For example, it has become second nature for many Christians to hold that the soul is more important than the body; regardless of the state …
Extraordinary Love In The Lives Of Lay People, Dennis M. Doyle
Extraordinary Love In The Lives Of Lay People, Dennis M. Doyle
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The College Theology Society (CTS), initially called the Society of Catholic College Teachers of Sacred Doctrine, was founded mainly by religious and clergy in the early 1950s to support those who taught college-level theology to Catholics in non-seminary settings. Sometimes CTS, in comparison with another group, is said to be relatively more lay-oriented. What this actually means, I think, is that for the CTS, the college classroom, populated mainly by lay people, was the primary locus for carrying out the task of teaching theology.
The main goal was to promote the religious formation of Catholic lay people. Given some of …

This chapter is a survey on perfect graphs with an algorithmic flavor. Our emphasis is on important classes of perfect graphs for which there are fast and efficient recognition and optimization algorithms. The classes of graphs we discuss in this chapter are chordal, comparability, interval, perfectly orderable, weakly chordal, perfectly contractile, and chi-bound graphs. For each of these classes, when appropriate, we discuss the complexity of the recognition algorithm and algorithms for finding a minimum coloring, and a largest clique in the graph and its complement.

Otto Semmelroth, Sj, And The Ecclesiology Of The ‘Church As Sacrament’ At Vatican Ii, Dennis M. (Dennis Michael) Doyle
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This essay will demonstrate how Otto Semmelroth’s preconciliar work on the Church as sacrament connects with several ecclesiological themes that would later be developed in Lumen Gentium. These themes include the importance of a lay-inclusive Church, the universal call to holiness, the relationship between Mary and the Church, a Trinitarian ecclesial spirituality, and the use of sacrament as a fundamental category for organizing and interpreting a variety of images and concepts of the Church.'
First will come an attempt to take the measure of Semmelroth’s significant impact on Lumen Gentium within the context of the myriad contributions made by a …
