The educational context: There is a stark difference in how domestic and international students experience the university. The majority of university students fit into the description of traditional, residential students. However, many international students do not fit the traditional, residential student demographic. Many of our international students who come …

Dr. Kirk VanGilder (Gallaudet University) and Dr. Meghan Henning (University of Dayton) share their reflections from two academic workshops focusing on pedagogical strategies for teaching at the intersection of disability studies, religion, and theology. The Botany Of Empire In The Long Eighteenth Century, Yota Batsaki, Sarah Burke Cahalan, Anatole Tchikine Jan 2017

The Botany Of Empire In The Long Eighteenth Century, Yota Batsaki, Sarah Burke Cahalan, Anatole Tchikine

Marian Library Faculty Publications

This book brings together an international body of scholars working on eighteenth-century botany within the context of imperial expansion. The eighteenth century saw widespread exploration, a tremendous increase in the traffic in botanical specimens, taxonomic breakthroughs, and horticultural experimentation. The contributors to this volume compare the impact of new developments and discoveries across several regions, broadening the geographical scope of their inquiries to encompass imperial powers that did not have overseas colonial possessions—such as the Russian, Ottoman, and Qing empires and the Tokugawa shogunate—as well as politically borderline regions such as South Africa, Yemen, and New Zealand.

The essays in …

Learning Transfer: The Missing Link To Learning Among School Leaders In Burkina Faso And Ghana, Corinne Brion, Paula A. Cordeiro Jan 2017

Learning Transfer: The Missing Link To Learning Among School Leaders In Burkina Faso And Ghana, Corinne Brion, Paula A. Cordeiro

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Every year, billions of dollars are spent on development aid and training around the world. However, only 10% of this training results in the transfer of knowledge, skills, or behaviors learned in the training to the work place. Ideally, learning transfer produces effective and continued application by learners of the knowledge and skills they gained through their learning activities. Currently, there is a limited body of research examining the factors that hinder and promote learning transfer in professional development, particularly the professional development of school leaders in developing countries. This qualitative exploratory study sought to address the gap in the …

Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Problems For Ordinary Differential Equations With Dependence On Higher Order Derivatives, Ahlam Abid, Paul Eloe Jan 2017

Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Problems For Ordinary Differential Equations With Dependence On Higher Order Derivatives, Ahlam Abid, Paul Eloe

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper, the compression contraction fixed point theorem is applied to a right focal boundary value problem for a second order ordinary differential equation to provide sufficient conditions for existence of solutions in a cone. The nonlinear term is a function of three variables and singularities are allowed. A cone is defined in the Banach space C1[0, 1] and concavity of derivatives of solutions plays a key role. A family of examples is provided in which explicit sufficient conditions are exhibited.

Does Self-Enhancement Facilitate Task Performance?, Erin M. O'Mara, Lowell Gaertner Jan 2017

Does Self-Enhancement Facilitate Task Performance?, Erin M. O'Mara, Lowell Gaertner

Psychology Faculty Publications

Self-enhancement is a pervasive motivation that manifests broadly to promote and protect the positivity of the self. Research suggests that self-enhancement is associated with improved task performance. Untested, however, is whether that association is causal. The present research experimentally manipulated self-enhancement to examine its causal effect on task performance. Participants in 5 experiments were randomly assigned to self-enhance or not before completing a creativity task (Experiments 1–4) or pain-inducing cold-pressor task (Experiment 5). Results indicate that self-enhancing (but not self-effacing) on a dimension relevant (but not irrelevant) to the task facilitated performance. Furthermore, the data were consistent with the possibility …

Jews In Medieval England: Teaching Representations Of The Other, Miriamne Ara Krummel, Tison Pugh Jan 2017

Jews In Medieval England: Teaching Representations Of The Other, Miriamne Ara Krummel, Tison Pugh

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

This volume examines the teaching of Jewishness within the context of medieval England. It covers a wide array of academic disciplines and addresses a multitude of primary sources, including medieval English manuscripts, law codes, philosophy, art, and literature, in explicating how the Jew-as-Other was formed. Chapters are devoted to the teaching of the complexities of medieval Jewish experiences in the modern classroom. Jews in Medieval England: Teaching Representations of the Other also grounds medieval conceptions of the Other within the contemporary world where we continue to confront the problematic attitudes directed toward alleged social outcasts.

Metaphorical, Punitive, And Pedagogical Blindness In Hell, Meghan Henning Jan 2017

Metaphorical, Punitive, And Pedagogical Blindness In Hell, Meghan Henning

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

What is the role of the blind body in hell? Does it gesture to broader cultural conceptions of physical impairment? Can the blind be healed in places of eternal punishment? Does this ‘healing’ function similarly to the understandings of blindness available in contemporaneous medical texts? This article will examine the depictions of the blind in the extra-canonical apocalypses that describe hell. We will begin with a discussion of the apocalyptic tours of hell that describe blindness, paying special attention to the different roles (metaphorical, punitive, and pedagogical) that blindness plays in each text. We will also consider the impact that …

Remedies For Regulatory Takings (Constructive Expropriations), Deprivations, Expropriations Or Custodianship In South Africa And The U.S., Christopher J. Roederer Jan 2017

Remedies For Regulatory Takings (Constructive Expropriations), Deprivations, Expropriations Or Custodianship In South Africa And The U.S., Christopher J. Roederer

School of Law Faculty Publications

Oliver Wendell Holmes, writing for the Court in Pennsylvania Coal Co. v. Mahon (1922), started the regulatory takings tradition in the U.S. with his famous line that “if regulation goes too far it will be recognized as a taking” deserving of just compensation. As this paper will show, how far is too far depends on where you are. Under the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, regulations do not need to go as far as they once did, and under the law in states like Oregon and Florida, regulations do not need to go very far at all before one …
