The Weight Of Love, Garrett P. Steele Oct 2016

The Weight Of Love, Garrett P. Steele

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This project examines the graphic novel Romeo and Juliet: The War and how it relates and connects to "The University of Dayton's Mission Statement on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition" (CIT). In order to get started on the project, I looked over my notes for the CIT as well as for Romeo and Juliet and made a list of themes that I thought were interesting and that connected nicely with both works. From there, I created an outline, preparing what I wanted to say in the essay and then wrote a first draft of the essay. The first draft was incomplete …

Frank Zhang: Hipster Extraordinaire, Myra C. Tumlos, Garrett P. Steele

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

After the delicate deliberation of the characters of the series Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan, it was decided by both writers that Frank Zhang, son of Mars, is the ultimate hipster demigod. The structure of this essay was based on a simple argument, and carefully dissects the full series in order to really convey who Frank Zhang really is. It was additionally concluded by both writers that as complicated and intricate a character as Frank Zhang is, we wanted the audience to be able to not only imagine the illustrations of the character, but to further empathize with the …

Teach The Partnership: Critical University Studies And The Future Of Service-Learning, David J. Fine Oct 2016

Teach The Partnership: Critical University Studies And The Future Of Service-Learning, David J. Fine

English Faculty Publications

Edward Zlotkowski’s (1995) article “Does Service-Learning Have a Future?” challenges the academy to integrate community-engaged learning into the curriculum. As Zlotkowski suggests, students, staff, and faculty ought to engender a culture of civic action and ethical accountability enhanced by rigorous coursework, but this goal necessitates resources: administrators must invest in service-learning to reap its full benefits. Issues arise, however, when one considers this investment in light of the academy’s corporatization. Nussbaum (2010) has noted, for instance, how colleges and universities increasingly emphasize vocational training and professional readiness at the expense of humanist inquiry and civic responsibility. The academy’s corporatization, she …

Mining Mixed-Initiative Dialogs, Saverio Perugini Oct 2016

Mining Mixed-Initiative Dialogs, Saverio Perugini

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Human-computer dialogs are an important vehicle through which to produce a rich and compelling form of human-computer interaction. We view the specification of a human-computer dialog as a set of sequences of progressive interactions between a user and a computer system, and mine partially ordered sets, which correspond to mixing dialog initiative, embedded in these sets of sequences—a process we refer to as dialog mining—because partially ordered sets can be advantageously exploited to reduce the control complexity of a dialog implementation. Our mining losslessly compresses the specification of a dialog. We describe our mining algorithm and report the results of …

We emphasize a person-centered approach and an experience orientation, in which we view our primary responsibility as providing opportunities for the men and women to engage meaningfully with music, self, therapists, and other residents in order to identify problems and explore alternatives …
