Barnett Newman's Stations Of The Cross: Faith, Reason, And The Reasoned Flight From Reason, Roger J. Crum
Barnett Newman's Stations Of The Cross: Faith, Reason, And The Reasoned Flight From Reason, Roger J. Crum
University of Dayton Review
Born in 1905, Barnett Newman was among the most important and influential New York painters at mid century. Between 1958 and 1966, he painted a series of fourteen abstract canvases on the theme of the Stations of the Cross, the subject of this paper. All fourteen paintings are roughly six feet square and are painted in black and white of varying intensity on unprepared canvas: a somewhat larger fifteenth painting, executed between 1961 and 1964 and variously entitled Be II or Resurrection, has come to be associated with the series and is displayed together with it in the National Gallery …

Many studies of the law and policy creation process examine the efforts of particular interest groups and coalitions to influence the views and votes of legislators. Wysong focuses on the role of professional associations, specifically associations of health care professionals, in the legislative debate over the High Risk Occupational Disease Notification and Prevention Act, an example of what is most commonly known as "right-to-know" legislation.
The ethical codes and service-oriented goals of professions suggest that associations of professionals might act differently than interest groups. Wysong shows that the core groups in debates over health and safety legislation recognize that their …

As a pastor, there is no doubt my reading of Augustine is thoroughly theological in its perspective. I confess this from the outset. This being the case, it is extremely difficult for me to conceive that Augustine ever wrote in a mode detached from his conception that the highest goal for human life is to be conformed to the creative purpose for which it was intended. That is that human beings were created to find happiness or joy in the human quest finding peace in God. People then translate this quest into the love of neighbor in all human interactions, …
Mary And Woman In Augustine, Johann G. Roten S.M.
Mary And Woman In Augustine, Johann G. Roten S.M.
University of Dayton Review
"No woman ever set foot inside his house, he never spoke with a woman except in the presence of a third person or outside the parlor. He made no exceptions, not even for his own elder sister and his nieces, all three of them nuns." Thus speaks Possidius, a friend and fellow lodger, of Augustine's gameplan against women, and one German theologian was quick to remark that such "behavior would suggest that the man was psychologically disturbed " Was Augustine a sex-addict and misogynist, a woman hater because he first had been a sex slave? Both labels, misogyny and sexual …

The 21st Annual Philosophy Colloquium was a splendid success by all accounts. Funded by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Philosophy, and the Forum for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition Today, the program was lauded by guests and participants as "first-rate" and even "stunning. " It was listed by the Institute of Classical Studies at the University of London as a significant meeting of international interest!
Held Egger Reads Augustine On Fear And Trembling, Theodore Kisiel
Held Egger Reads Augustine On Fear And Trembling, Theodore Kisiel
University of Dayton Review
Martin Heidegger's reading of the Pauline Christian Augustine against the Neoplatonic Augustine in his lecture course of Summer 1921 radicalizes the human search for goodness to the stark realities of the historically contingent human being finding herself totally dependent on the historically revealed God even for the initiatives of that search. Centering his gloss on Book Ten of the Confessions, Heidegger focuses his interpretation on the distressed concern (cura) that defines the human heart, in contrast to the Platonic eros deliberately abstracted from its this-worldly context. Cura is etymologically related to quaero, seeking and questing, in order to highlight two …

Augustine’S Christian Humanism, Mary T. Clark

What are we to make of the opinion expressed by Herschel Baker in his study of the idea of human dignity, that Augustine held back humanism for centuries? This challenges, of course, the legitimacy of the title: "Augustine's Christian Humanism."
