Aristotle On Nature, Law And Justice, Fred D. Miller Jr.
Aristotle On Nature, Law And Justice, Fred D. Miller Jr.
University of Dayton Review
Aristotle is often represented as "the father of natural law." Nevertheless, many modern commentators deny the concept of natural law or natural right a legitimate place in his philosophical thought. This denial generally rests on two sorts of arguments: that it is impossible to construct a natural law interpretation of Aristotle which is consistent with all of the texts, and that the natural law claims in particular are manifestly too inconsistent with well attested Aristotelian doctrines for it to be credible to attribute them to him.
Autarkeia In Aristotle, Eve Browning Cole
Autarkeia In Aristotle, Eve Browning Cole
University of Dayton Review
The quality of autarkeia, usually translated "self-sufficiency" or "independence," is significant in the Greek moral tradition from Socrates through the Stoics. Xenophon praises the autarkeia of Socrates in several contexts; Memorabilia 1.2.14 tells how Critias and Alcibiades were attracted by the fact that "Socrates, though possessed of very little, was living the most self-sufficient of lives (autarkestata zonta), having achieved mastery over all the pleasures …" Near the end of this work, Xenophon eulogizes Socrates as having been "so wise that he was unerring in his judgement of the better and the worse, and needed no counsellor, but relied on …

On Protosocialist Nations, Eugene E. Ruyle
On Protosocialist Nations, Eugene E. Ruyle
University of Dayton Review
Few questions are of greater importance for our species than those relating to the nature of the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and other societies emerging from the historic revolutions of the twentieth century. Are these models for a brighter, happier, and more humane future? Or are they threats to all that is good and decent about humanity? The answers to such questions necessarily affect our views on all political questions, from Star Wars and the arms race to U.S. intervention in Central America.

Revising Our Myths Of Masculinity, William G. Doty
Revising Our Myths Of Masculinity, William G. Doty
University of Dayton Review
The ways in which perceptions of gender are shaped are direct reflections of the worldview and hence the ethos (system of values) of a particular culture. Worldview is seldom made explicit in terms of "do this" or "do that" but it is part of the common sense that undergirds the acceptable parameters of behaviors and ideals and that shapes the public languages and imagery of a culture. Worldviews provide the models of social expressions of values and aspirations when they foreground this or that type of figure: more or less militaristic, more or less self-centered, more masculine or more feminine, …
Real Men Don't, Or Anti-Male Bias In English, Eugene R. August
Real Men Don't, Or Anti-Male Bias In English, Eugene R. August
University of Dayton Review
Despite numerous studies of sex bias in language during the past fifteen years, only rarely has anti-male bias been examined. In part, this neglect occurs because many of these studies have been based upon assumptions which are questionable at best and which at worst exhibit their own form of sex bias. Whether explicitly or implicitly, many of these studies reduce human history to a tale of male oppressors and female victims or rebels. In this view of things, all societies become patriarchal societies, a familiar term used to suggest that for centuries males have conspired to exploit and demean females. …
In Search Of Adam: A Genesis Of Manhood, Grant Venerable
In Search Of Adam: A Genesis Of Manhood, Grant Venerable
University of Dayton Review
According to poet-mythologist Robert Bly, "the ancient rites of male initiation were complicated and subtle experiences … a continual spiral … " through four recurring seasons: 1) bonding with and separation from mother; 2) bonding with and separation from father; 3) discovery of the "male mother"; 4) the interior marriage with the Hidden Woman (the "Eve" presence within). Bly goes on to describe the first season-beginning with the instantaneous birth-bonding, recurring with later bonding episodes, and concluding with separation from mother.
