A field study was initiated towards the end of the 1973 rain season to assess some residual effects of lime, N and P applications to a moderately acid Oxisol (initial pH 5.6; LR 10 tons/ha) on grain yield in navy beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., grown soon following maize silage. The Oxisol was a sandy clay loam (35:13:52). Incorporation Trends Of (I-C14) Acetate In Pregnancy Lipids Of Various Organs, D.P. Sharma, T. A. Venkitasubramanian

Comparative evaluation of (I-C14) acetate incorporation was studied in ovary, adrenal, blood plasma and placenta in guinea pigs in mid pregnancy. The respective level of incorporation within the sample for total lipids did not differ in pregnancy and non-pregnant states. Placental lipids in general, and phospholipids in particular were highly incorporated in contrast to other organs/tissues. Amongst non-pregnancy total lipids, the blood plasma showed an elevated incorporation over ovarian and adrenal lipids. The ovary in pregnancy revealed depressed incorporation in general, except for esterified cholesterol which contained higher incorporation.  Phosphatidyl choline in adrenal, and phosphatidyl ethanolamine in blood plasma appeared …

Chromosome Numbers of 30 taxa of angiosperms from Tanzania are reported. Of these, counts of 8 species are new. The occurrence of B-chromosome in Ornithogalum longibracteatum is reported for the first time.

Contributions To The Knowledge Of The Mydis (Crustacea) From The Tanzanian Waters, Mihai Bacescu

This is the first study on Mysids from the Tanzanian coast waters, in which, on the basis of material captured by himself, the author deals with some species belonging to the subfamily of Gastrosaccidae and Mysinae. Of the about 20 species identified so far in the collected material, five are new, namely: Gastrosaccus  msangii n.sp.; Anisomysis kunduchiana n.sp.; Tenagomysis tanzaniana n.sp.; Anisomysis sirielloides n.sp. and Mysidopsis coralicola n.sp. and six others are new to the area. Ecological and ethological data concerning all species mentioned are given.

Trials With Trickle Irrigation Equipment At Morogoro Preliminary Report, M.E. Parkes, M. E. Madata

The use of trickle irrigation is discussed with reference to Tanzania. A split-split plot design experiment is described in which yields of tomato, onion, and cabbage are compared for trickle and hand-irrigated plots, with different levels of fertiliser treatment. Yields for trickle-irrigated plots were significantly greater only for tomatoes. These results were achieved during July to October and a second attempt to grow the same vegetables during December to March was unsuccessful. Further trials are required to obtain a suitable rotation of vegetable crops from both a nutritional and agronomic point of view. Experience with the trickle irrigation equipment is …

An algol computer program is described, by means of which the spectral reflectivity for any angle of incidence may be calculated for a surface consisting of up to two thin absorbing films on a bulk substrate. The values of optical constant, n and k, for the materials used and also the thickness of the films, are the only data required. Calculated reflectivities have been shown to be consistent with experimental results.

Since the location of extensive *ilmenite-bearing beach sands in Australia, and now in Tanzania, the separation and analysis of the mineral has become more important than ever. This is particularly because ilmenite has now become the principal source of rutile, an important product in the manufacture of pigments and ceramic materials. Electrochemistry has had several practical uses in industry for a long time; but one of the more recent applications is the machining of metals. Direct current ECM has been applied in industry for the last two decades. However, ECM with alternating current is still in the early stage of research and development. This paper shows that ECM with normal a.c supply is feasible and practicable if special tools are used. ECM with d.c. is first introduced to provide a better insight for the machining with a.c.

Plague has been endemic in East Africa from very early times. The fact that the plague organism occurring in the area is mostly Pasteurella pestis var. antiqua which is said to have been associated with the Justinian pandemic of the 6th century A. D. would seem to support the contention that this endemicity was established during that pandemic. The pattern of tidal submergence and exposure in the Kunduchi mangrove basin is determined by contour mapping and by relating the contours to published tide predictions. Salinity of the creek effluent is measured at spring and neap tides in both wet and dry seasons. The vegetation of the basin, up to the highest high water level, is described briefly.
