Florida Frontier Incidents During The 1850s, George C. Bittle
Florida Frontier Incidents During The 1850s, George C. Bittle
Florida Historical Quarterly
From a military viewpoint Florida’s frontier at the beginning of the 1850s was relatively quiet. There was no significant warfare, but the Indian question was far from settled. Governor Thomas Brown’s message to the Florida legislature in 1850 repeated many previous statements and complained about the almost total disorganization of Florida’s militia. Governor Brown typically blamed this situation on the current militia law’s unwieldy nature. However, it should be noted, that Florida military officials had not made the militia returns required by the federal government since 1845. There would seem to be some question therefore, concerning the state’s desire to …

Sidney J. Catts: The Road To Power, Wayne Flynt
Florida Historical Quarterly
The South produced a bumper crop of political demagogues between 1890 and 1920. This unparalleled but dubious array of luminaries included James E. Ferguson of Texas, Huey Long of Louisiana, James K. Vardaman and Theodore Bilbo of Mississippi, Tom Heflin of Alabama, Tom Watson of Georgia, Cole Blease, “Cotton” Ed Smith, and Ben Tillman of South Carolina, as well as many others. These politicos broke the back of conservative Bourbonism with their emotional appeals to the religious and racial intolerance of the newly powerful masses of voters. Once in office they frequently championed social and economic reform such as the …
Chateaubriand's Florida And His Journey To America, E. P. Panagopoulos
Chateaubriand's Florida And His Journey To America, E. P. Panagopoulos
Florida Historical Quarterly
The American writings of Chateaubriand have nearly been forgotten. Despite the beauty of their poetic prose and the power of their descriptions, historians now consider them obsolete. In 1968 the bicentennial year of his birth was celebrated in other parts of the world with special conferences and impressive publications, but in the United States no periodical commemorated the event, and no paper re-evaluating Chateaubriand’s contribution was read in any of the numerous historical meetings. And yet, Chateaubriand was not just another author. During the first half of the nineteenth century his writings played a great part in shaping French, if …
Nazi Invasion Of Florida!, Leon O. Prior
Nazi Invasion Of Florida!, Leon O. Prior
Florida Historical Quarterly
The United States has been invaded only twice by enemy military forces since the War of 1812. Both invasions were by small parties of German saboteurs during World War II. On June 13, 1942, four men came ashore by boat from a submarine at Amagansett, Long Island, New York. Four days later, four other Germans landed along the isolated beach some four miles south of Ponte Vedra, a luxurious resort on the upper east coast of Florida near Jacksonville. These German invasions were a part of the Abwehr’s Operation Pastorius.

Luis Bertucat And William Augustus Bowles: West Florida Adversaries In 1791, Jack D. L. Holmes
Luis Bertucat And William Augustus Bowles: West Florida Adversaries In 1791, Jack D. L. Holmes
Florida Historical Quarterly
In an effort to check the expansion of the American frontiersmen onto Indian lands after the American Revolution, William Augustus Bowles, self-styled head of the Creek-Cherokee Nation, and later “Director-General of the State of Muskogee,” wrote the Spanish minister of state, the Conde de Floridablanca, in 1791. Bowles asked for Spanish protection for the Creeks and Cherokees and urged a wider alliance or confederation of the Choctaws, Chickasaws, Cherokees and Creeks. He also suggested that Spain modify its commercial restrictions and remove the monopoly which had been granted the firm of William Panton, Thomas Forbes, and Robert Leslie, and instead …
Educating The Seminole Indians Of Florida, 1879-1970, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Educating The Seminole Indians Of Florida, 1879-1970, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
It was not until the 1920s that Seminole Indian children in Florida began to attend federal and public schools on a regular basis. The Seminoles were among the last tribes to accept the benefits of public school education. Much of the basis for this long resistance is found in the cultural and geographic isolation of the Seminoles. Following a series of devastating confrontations with the government between 1817 and 1858, collectively known as the Seminole Wars, most of the Seminoles who had not been killed were sent to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma. Those few Indians who remained in Florida …
Cotton And The Factorage System In Antebellum Florida, Julia F. Smith
Cotton And The Factorage System In Antebellum Florida, Julia F. Smith
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida planters cultivated both short staple and Sea Island cotton. The most common varieties of short staple cotton grown throughout the lower South were Green Seed, Mexican, Petit Gulf, and Mastadon. Florida growers preferred the Mexican to other “short” cotton seed. Under favorable conditions, it yielded about 1,500 pounds of cotton to the acre. In other cotton culture areas the yield was not so great; for instance, in the fertile black belt of Alabama yields of 800 to 1,000 pounds of short staple per acre were obtained. The yield from less fertile regions was not so great. In the South …

Negro Troops In Florida, 1898, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr.
Negro Troops In Florida, 1898, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
The outbreak of the War with Spain in 1898 elicited a mixed reaction among Negro Americans. Enthusiastic pro-war advocates viewed the conflict in terms of its benefits to Negroes. Their argument maintained that the black man’s participation in the military effort would win respect from whites and therefore enhance his status at home. They also emphasized that the islands likely to come under American influence would open economic opportunities for black citizens. Opposing such views were the highly vocal anti-war, anti-imperialist elements within the Negro community. Though sympathetic with the plight of Cuba and especially with Negro Cubans, these black …

A Note On Governor George F. Drew, Jerrell H. Shofner
A Note On Governor George F. Drew, Jerrell H. Shofner
Florida Historical Quarterly
For the proponents of the legend of the “Lost Cause” George F. Drew ranks high in the galaxy of heroes as the “Redeemer,” whose election as governor in 1876 saved Florida from the “Radical” Republicans, and restored “home rule” to the native white population. Of course, many Floridians had known during the 1876 election campaign that Drew was a New Hampshire native, that he had been a Unionist in Georgia during the war years, and that he was only recently converted to the Conservative-Democratic cause, after supporting Ulysses S. Grant for President in 1868. Nor was it any secret that …

The Gulf Coast lying south of Charlotte Harbor was slow to yield to the advances of the white man’s culture. Its contours are irregular, broken by hundreds of indentations and held together by congeries of islands and keys almost too numerous to be charted and labeled. Only in recent years have surveyors and cartographers been able to map the area with reliable accuracy and correct some of the errors resulting from the incomplete observations of the early explorers. A confusion of geographical designation continues to plague the modern historian. Rivers noted by earlier writers appear now to have been mere …

Plant's Lieutenants, Dudley S. Johnson
Florida Historical Quarterly
Henry Bradley Plant, native of Connecticut and owner of the Southern Express Company, successfully developed a rail network from the Georgia line to Charlotte Harbor. One of his lines was the first to reach the small, backwater village of Tampa where he built the lavish Tampa Bay Hotel in 1891. He also bought or constructed hotels in Port Tampa, Beleair, Punta Gorda, Ocala, Kissimmee, and Winter Park. He established a steamship line to Havana, Cuba, with stops at various ports along the West coast of Florida and at Key West, and his riverboats operated on the St. Johns, the Apalachicola, …
Caloosahatchee Massacre: Its Significance In The Second Seminole War, George R. Adams
Caloosahatchee Massacre: Its Significance In The Second Seminole War, George R. Adams
Florida Historical Quarterly
Recent scholarship has put the Second Seminole War in its proper place as one of the most dramatic episodes in the period of Indian removal. The war was the longest, most expensive and most exhausting Indian conflict of the era. Hostilities lasted from 1835 to 1842, and cost an estimated $40,000,000 while over 1,400 regular army troops and an indeterminable number of militiamen, civilians, and Indians lost their lives in the swamps and wilderness of Florida. Guerrilla tactics, atrocities, almost continual negotiation, generally undistinguished military activity, frequent change of command, and conflict between civilian and military authorities characterized the struggle.

Not until just before World War II did Leon become an urban county. Tallahassee always had been the only real town in the county, and for more than a century it had been a fairly small community. The 1940 census showed that for the first time more than half the county’s population, 16,240 of the 31,646 persons, lived in Tallahassee. The city’s growth since World War II has turned Leon into one of Florida’s most urban counties. Before that time it shared with its four neighboring counties-Jackson, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Madison-the characteristics of being rural, agricultural, and, for the most …
