Alexander Hamilton's Florida Policy, Gilbert L. Lycan Oct 2021

Alexander Hamilton's Florida Policy, Gilbert L. Lycan

Florida Historical Quarterly

Alexander Hamilton had a greater interest in Florida and spoke of it more often than any other prominent American of his period. While still living in the West Indies, he worked for Beckman and Cruger at Christiansed, and during a part of that time he was in charge of their commercial activities. Whenever he looked at a map of North America, which he often did in the course of his activities, he saw first of all the peninsula of Florida pointing out toward his homeland. Throughout his life Hamilton was aware of the importance of Florida in the future of …

Tampa Bay In 1757: Francisco Maria Celi's Journal And Logbook, Part 1, John D. Ware Oct 2021

Tampa Bay In 1757: Francisco Maria Celi's Journal And Logbook, Part 1, John D. Ware

Florida Historical Quarterly

For almost two centuries following their discovery and exploration Tampa Bay lay virtually neglected by the Spanish. Then, in 1756, for a variety of reasons, they seemed to awake to the potential of the area, and they authorized two surveys. The first, made by Juan Baptista Franco in the closing months of 1756, was but briefly recorded. Perhaps because of the brevity of this report a second survey was sought by Señor Don Lorenzo de Montalbo, comisario ordenador de marina, principal naval minister in Cuba. The mission was entrusted to Don Francisco Maria Celi, pilot of the Spanish Royal Fleet, …

Florida After Secession: Abandonment By The Confederacy And Its Consequences, John F. Reiger Oct 2021

Florida After Secession: Abandonment By The Confederacy And Its Consequences, John F. Reiger

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the early months of 1861, some Florida citizens seemed to feel that the approaching conflict would be diversion rather than tragedy. On January 12, the day after the state seceded, a detachment of Florida and Alabama troops seized the navy yard at Pensacola. They were accompanied by a jovial throng of townspeople who found the event greatly entertaining. Other Floridians believed that the government would not fight to preserve the Union, or if it did fight, that the efforts would be cowardly and short. Throughout the state, prominent men offered to drink all the blood spilt in any struggle …

Tallahassee Through The Storebooks, 1843-1863: Antebellum Cotton Prosperity, Clifton Paisley Oct 2021

Tallahassee Through The Storebooks, 1843-1863: Antebellum Cotton Prosperity, Clifton Paisley

Florida Historical Quarterly

Few things stirred more interest than the planting, harvesting and marketing of cotton in mid-nineteenth-century Tallahassee. In April 1849, cotton was in the ground and prospects looked bright despite a severe freeze on April 15. There was some apprehension that the unexpected cold had badly damaged and perhaps had destroyed the young plants, but these fears were quickly allayed. The freeze was even more severe in the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, and the damage in those areas indicated a likely increase in cotton prices from the seven or eight cents a pound of recent years. In addition to cotton, …

How To Escape The Yankees: Major Scott's Letter To His Wife At Tallahassee, March 1864, Clifton Paisley Oct 2021

How To Escape The Yankees: Major Scott's Letter To His Wife At Tallahassee, March 1864, Clifton Paisley

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Middle Florida cotton plantation region that centered in Tallahassee had good reason in the spring of 1864 to fear an attack by Federal forces despite the impressive Confederate victory at the Battle of Olustee on February 20. After this bloody engagement Union troops retreated to Jacksonville, and pursuing Confederates stopped twelve miles short of the city at McGirt's Creek. They dug in there, and for months there was a standoff. Florida’s long and poorly defended shoreline provided abundant other opportunities for a Federal assault, however. Middle Florida had become particularly vulnerable to an attack with the withdrawal of Confederate …

The Female Protection And The Sun Light: Two Contemporary Negro Mutual Aid Societies, Bruce Ergood Oct 2021

The Female Protection And The Sun Light: Two Contemporary Negro Mutual Aid Societies, Bruce Ergood

Florida Historical Quarterly

Mutual Aid Societies were an integral part of the lifestyle of nineteenth-century American blacks. These precursors of contemporary insurance companies provided financial assistance to members in time of sickness and crisis and paid the burial costs of the departed member. Societies were founded in the East and throughout the South, both in rural and urban communities. Many of these societies— or burial clubs, as they are commonly called— continue to exist.

The Captives Of Florida, Eugene Lyon Oct 2021

The Captives Of Florida, Eugene Lyon

Florida Historical Quarterly

In September 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés of Spain sought out and attacked the Huguenot French in their Florida settlement. When his victory was won, a number of men, women, and children had become captives of the Spanish, while at least two Spaniards were prisoners in the hands of the French. Some of these people possessed noble blood; most were common sailors and soldiers. A few gained a degree of notoriety from their experiences– at least one of the captives was received at the court of Philip II of Spain, while another appeared before the Queen Mother of France. While …

Coaches Behaving Badly, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Since the beginning of this month the news from the world of sport in the United States has been dominated by coaches behaving badly. More accurately perhaps, the behaviors could be classified as bad, worse, and worst. I will not try to classify these, but feel free to do so.

Going Fast And Taking It Slow, Seetha Raghavan Oct 2021

Going Fast And Taking It Slow, Seetha Raghavan

UCF Forum

Our quest for high speed travel, the kind that will one day have us zipping across continents in just a few hours, began almost immediately after the first powered flight, a little over a century ago. It started with better engines, accompanied by sleek and strong airframes, as designs eventually evolved to achieve a breakthrough in faster-than-sound or supersonic flight just over four decades later.

The Behaviors Of A Captive Father-Daughter Pair Of Ateles Geoffroyi Geoffroyi, Felicia Gordian Oct 2021

The Behaviors Of A Captive Father-Daughter Pair Of Ateles Geoffroyi Geoffroyi, Felicia Gordian

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens intends to introduce new members to the black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi geoffroyi) enclosure. The behavioral analysis of captive animals within their human-made zoo environments is pertinent information for zookeepers before such an introduction can be made. To contribute to that goal, this study observed the behaviors of a father-daughter pair of black-handed spider monkeys. This study observed their vocalizations, habitat utilization, enrichment utilization, conspecific interactions, and interactions with humans to better understand how they interact with their environment as well as their group dynamics. This behavioral baseline can then be utilized to …

Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama Oct 2021

Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama

Interface: The C3 Lab Knowledge Commons

In this paper, I will discuss my own experience and approaches to enhancing students' learning in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) classes by adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates academic research and industry practice. Due to the inherent interdisciplinarity of HCI, and to foster a set of "soft" skills known in Interdisciplinary Studies as the "cognitive toolkit," I invite expertise from the other departments at my university as well as industry professionals to give lectures, facilitate workshops, and oversee projects. These collaborations have produced several insights and have had a positive impact on the participants.

An Empirical Modeling Of Transformation Process Through Trip Experiences, Asli D.A. Tasci, Maksim Godovykh Oct 2021

An Empirical Modeling Of Transformation Process Through Trip Experiences, Asli D.A. Tasci, Maksim Godovykh

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Transformative experience has been the buzzword in recent years. Tourism and hospitality experiences in natural, historical, cultural, and authentic spaces are some of them. However, to this date, specific dimensions of transformation or its process have not been empirically identified. This study reviewed the literature on transformation, used open-ended questions to collect free-elicited responses on the meanings of transformation, collected expert opinion, and developed a 101-item scale reflecting different dimensions and the steps of the transformation process. The scale was validated with a sequential scale validation procedure; Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) were used …
