Intended as a memorial to Captain Joseph Fry (born Tampa Bay, Fl., June 14,1826), this volume begins with his biography, tracing his life and career during and after the American Civil War. It then details the confiscation of Fry's ship, the Virginius, in 1873, for running arms to Cuba during its insurrection against Spain, an event which brought about Captain Fry's subsequent execution. The narrative continues with an account of the U.S. reaction to Spain's seizure of the ship, and its eventual return to the United States.
