The Evolving Suffrage Militancy Of Mary Nolan, Judith Pouche

Florida Historical Quarterly

Petite, frail, physically impaired, and seventy-three years old, Mary Nolan could easily be underestimated by anyone foolish enough to equate physical vigor with mental strength. On November 14, 1917, several men brutalized the Jacksonville grandmother as she endured what suffragists would soon call the "Night of Terror" in a Virginia prison. One guard had told her, "I'll take you and handle you, and you'll be sorry you made me." Nolan recalled: "A man sprang at me, and caught me by the shoulder. ... I was jerked down the steps and away into the dark ... [,and later] they pushed me …

The Right To Vote And The Long Nineteenth Century In Florida, Robert Cassanello

Florida Historical Quarterly

These special issues are meant to reflect on the quincentennial history of Ponce de Leon's landing on the shores of the Florida peninsula and as historians we are challenged to understand and come to terms with the consequence of those actions. The editors of the Florida Historical Quarterly have asked the contributors to explore Florida's past through the lens of a century long view. The nineteenth century presents such a unique challenge for these types of historical reflections because so much by way of technology, communication, transportation, societal relations transformed more rapidly than any previously recorded century. The world was …

African Americans In Florida, 1870-1920: A Historiographical Essay, David H. Jackson

Florida Historical Quarterly

The history of African Americans in Florida is a subject area that remains under-researched. While historians have generally done a commendable job examining the topic for the last fifty years or so, Florida still lags behind other southern states when it comes to scholarship on its African American populace. Thus, this essay seeks to review some of the scholarly works that have been published on the subject of African Americans in Florida from 1870 to 1920. It is arranged thematically with scholarship addressing major topics such as: Reconstruction, racial relations, racial violence, politics, religion, urban history, labor, black women, education, …

Special Issue Introduction By Fhq Editors, Connie L. Lester

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the planning of the 500 Years of Florida History series, we decided that the complexity of the nineteenth century was too challenging for a single issue. As a result, we divided the century at the end of Reconstruction and expanded it to 1920 and the extension of suffrage to American women with the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The seven articles that focused on the earlier decades of nineteenth century appeared in the winter issue of Volume 94 and were edited by James Cusick. Those articles covered a range of topics from literature to Native …

Enhancing Gender, Race And Ethnicity Subjects For Inclusive Metadata, Sai Deng, Jeanne Piascik, Peter Spyers-Duran

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

To improve discovery of biography collections in a library and embrace Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in cataloging, the librarians can audit their collections with gender, race and ethnicity of the biographees in mind. At the University of Central Florida, librarians from Cataloging, Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) and Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Services (ILL/DDS) analyzed a juvenile biography collection for biases, and enhanced its subject headings with the biographees’ gender, race and other information.

A rubric was designed to analyze the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and non-LCSH in bibliographic records for biographies, including the biographees’ gender, race, …

Enhance The Discovery And Interoperability Of Culturally Rich Information: The Chinese Women Poets Wikiproject, Sai Deng, Greta Heng, Amanda Xu, Lihong Zhu, Xiaoli Li

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Traditionally, special collections such as culture and heritage collections and their name authority data were cataloged using local cataloging standards with limited data interoperability. The library community has questioned for a number of years how to increase the accessibility and visibility of cultural heritage information stored in centralized databases. Wikidata, a global and open knowledge repository of structured data serving as a hub for linking resources, has emerged as one of possible solutions to library data silo issues. A group of Chinese American librarians from several institutions formed a WikiProject team: Chinese Culture and Heritage group in 2020 to study …

Cleaning Invisible Matter In Open-Kitchen Restaurants To Reduce The Impact Of Covid-19, Bendegul Okumus

Rosen Research Review

Commercial cooking in indoor settings is known to produce particulate matter, a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets which can cause acute or chronic respiratory problems. Recent studies suggest that these invisible particles also make people more susceptible to adverse health effects of the COVID-19 virus. Dr. Bendegul Okumus was joined by a team and conducted an experimental scientific study in an open-kitchen chain restaurant to determine whether the levels of particulate matter (PM) pollution were potentially harmful for both kitchen staff and customers dining at the restaurant.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused devastating financial decline within the restaurant industry. Dr. Elizabeth Yost from UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management and her collaborator have undertaken research to understand what motivates customers in this unchartered landscape. They have developed a new theoretical model which focuses on the impact of customer risk perceptions and optimistic bias. Other influencers are personality traits and factors such as customer loyalty and trust, which Dr. Yost argues can be maintained through transparency of information.

Micro-Clustering: Bringing Innovation To Agritourism, Robin Back

Rosen Research Review

What’s better than simply drinking wine in a vineyard? Maybe a beautiful destination where the whole family can enjoy a day together, tasting wine, enjoying a variety of activities, and watching the kids play. Dr. Robin Back at the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management and his collaborators have examined a case example that presents a new business model for wine tourism—micro-clustering with diverse forms of ownership on two adjacent wine farms. The team reveals how a single South African agribusiness achieved success, and raises the possibility of other similar businesses doing the same.

That’s the question behind a new study led by Rosen Professor Robertico Croes and Assistant Professor Jorge Ridderstaat. Using Poland as a case study, the research looks at the role of tourism in economic and human development since communism fell in the 1990s and the country transitioned from a centrally-driven to a market-led economy.

Reaching Out To Occupational Therapists, Alan Fyall

Rosen Research Review

Accessible tourism is a growing area of tourism research. The belief that all tourism facilities, products, and services should be accessible to those with disabilities drives research in tourism ethics and sustainability. However, a key voice is being ignored. Occupational therapists play a critical role in enabling people with disabilities to participate in the activities of daily life, including leisure. Dr. Alan Fyall believes it is time for interdisciplinary research with occupational therapists to properly understand accessible tourism.

Developing A Scale To Measure Destination Gender, Tingting Zhang

Rosen Research Review

Whether they depict the rugged landscape of the American West or the seductive charm of a South Asian beach, photographs and their accompanying text are powerful drivers of tourism demand. But what lies behind our response to such tourism tropes? Rosen College researchers have produced a new study which reappraises destination marketing through a gender-based lens. Led by Dr. Tingting Zhang, the study has developed and validated a cross-cultural scale to determine ‘destination gender’, or whether a location should be thought of as having masculine or feminine gender traits and appeal.

A Qualtrics survey to audit the juvenile biography collection was designed by the librarians, and a student checked the biography books and inputted data into the survey. The librarians then exported the data to …
