Gene-Poor Y-Chromosomes Substantially Impact Male Trait Heritabilities And May Help Shape Sexually Dimorphic Evolution, Ken Fedorka
Research Data and Datasets
How natural selection facilitates sexually dimorphic evolution despite a shared genome is unclear. The patrilineal inheritance of Y-chromosomes makes them an appealing solution. However, they have largely been dismissed due to their gene-poor, heterochromatic nature and because the additive genetic variation necessary for adaptive evolution is theoretically difficult to maintain. Further, previous empirical work has revealed only Y-linked sign epistatic variance segregating within populations, which can often impede adaptive evolution. To assess the evolutionary impact of Y-linked variation, we established replicate populations in Drosophila simulans containing multiple Y-chromosomes (YN populations) or a single Y-chromosome variant (Y1 populations) drawn from a …

Textbook Affordability + Wordpress + Dc Api = Unique Etextbook Portal Collaboration, Lee Dotson, Bobby Ciullo, Lily Dubach, Kerri Bottorff
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
As part of a textbook affordability initiative, the University of Central Florida Libraries sought ways to inform students that hundreds of required textbooks are available for free as library eTextbooks. When other methods did not include necessary information such as a link to the eTextbook or other details, a secondary method was investigated: creating an eTextbook Portal. An eTextbook Portal serves as a searchable webpage to help students locate eTextbooks that match their courses. A collaboration between the institutional repository, textbook affordability, and web services produced this creative solution to organize and share information for each eTextbook using Digital Commons …

World Series, Richard C. Crepeau
World Series, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The last few weeks has offered some very good and exciting baseball. The new format of the playoffs has not noticeably damaged the playoff process. As in the case of most playoffs, some good teams are eliminated; some very hot teams move forward; and some very good teams advance. This is generally the case in most playoff schemes in most sports. A short series, five to seven games, does not always reward the best team. The Philadelphia Phillies, the hot team, and the Houston Astros, the very good team, have advanced to the World Series. It looks like a very …
