The Safety And Environmental Effects Of Nuclear Power Plants, Raymond E. Schweikart Jan 1973

The Safety And Environmental Effects Of Nuclear Power Plants, Raymond E. Schweikart

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The nuclear power plant has given new direction to power generation. It offers a new source of heat. The heat can now come from the fission of atomic fuel and not from the burning of fossil fuel. Safety and protection from the possible hazards of radioactivity generated by nuclear power plants is a completely new and untested area. Emergency systems and over designed construction are only part of what has to be done to make absolutely certain such accidents, if they occur, will be contained allowing no harmful radioactivity to reach the environment. Handling of radioactive wastes is very critical …

It is advisable for those persons engaged in the dynamic environmental sciences to …

Removal Of Color From Surface Water In Central Florida, Joseph R. Wanielista Jan 1973

Removal Of Color From Surface Water In Central Florida, Joseph R. Wanielista

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The USPHS limits color in water to 15 color units. However, it is desirable to remove all the color. Color in surface water is mainly due to humic substances and was found in concentrations varying up to 450 color units. Removal of color by coagulation and flocculation has been practiced over the years. The mechanisms involved have not yet been fully understood. During the course of this investigation, a literature survey, studying the nature of color, mechanisms or color removal, and optimum color removal conditions, has been conducted. Samples have been obtained from surface waters in Central Florida; namely Big …

Investigation Of Sequential Machine Design Techniques For Implementation Of A Trac Scanning Algorithm, Raymond F. Cotton Jan 1973

Investigation Of Sequential Machine Design Techniques For Implementation Of A Trac Scanning Algorithm, Raymond F. Cotton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report will demonstrate the design techniques to translate a given scanning algorithm into a hardwired pre-processor. The language to be "pre-processed" is TRAC (Text Reckoning and Compiling) devised by Mooers and Deutsch. The major drawback in the current implementation of TRAC is speed. The software overhead required for string manipulations and execution of the input scanning algorithm is the major degrading factor. A TRAC machine consisting of a hardwired pre-processor to scan the input and produce formatted data for a stack oriented evaluator is proposed. The control machine for the input scanning algorithm for the pre-processor is designed using …

Triggered Sweep Generators Using Modern Integrated Circuits, Arthur Russell Klinger Jan 1973

Triggered Sweep Generators Using Modern Integrated Circuits, Arthur Russell Klinger

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The oscilloscope is undoubtedly one of the most important tools in any electronics shop. Presently there are many relatively inexpensive oscilloscopes available, but triggered sweep capability is still reserved for those oscilloscopes costing more than 200 - 500 dollars. The goal of this project was to develop a respectably performing triggered sweep system at a low enough cost to allow inclusion of this valuable feature in any oscilloscope. Two of the most important specifications of an oscilloscope are the bandwidth of the vertical amplifier, and the maximum sweep frequency. The broad class of "inexpensive oscilloscope" would include those with a …

A Survey Of Medical Diagnostic Software, Steven Stein Jan 1973

A Survey Of Medical Diagnostic Software, Steven Stein

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The field of medical diagnostic software is reviewed to define its status in the medical profession. This is accomplished in a two-step procedure. The first step is a cross-section of literature on the topic, and the second step is a survey of physicians in a sample area. The cross-section of literature presents some of the more advanced studies which have been conducted on medical diagnostic software. Also presented is an explanation of the logic used in diagnostic software and the results of several test cases. The survey was of physicians in the Orlando, Florida area to define the actual application …

An Analysis Of The Maintenance And Supply System Of The Atlantic Missile Range Communications Network, John Alexander Morian Jan 1973

An Analysis Of The Maintenance And Supply System Of The Atlantic Missile Range Communications Network, John Alexander Morian

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The maintenance and supply system of the Atlantic Missile Range Communications Network (AMRCN) is modeled to determine the optimum level of men and parts which must be available at Cape Kennedy, the source of supply, in order to minimize the level of failed equipment at the four remote sites. The system is simulated utilizing a DYNAMO model. DYNAMO is a compiler for translating and running continuous models (models described by a set of differential equations). Flow diagrams of the breakdowns, men, and parts and the information flow between these segments of the model are presented. The results obtained are discussed …

Development Of A Radar Pulse Modulator, Eckard Friedrich Natter Jan 1973

Development Of A Radar Pulse Modulator, Eckard Friedrich Natter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report summarizes the design of a 25kW peak power pulse modulator for an airborne medium--range weather radar. It is the purpose of the modulator to collect and store energy over a certain time period and to form this energy into a short, high-power pulse. The modulator is required to drive a coaxial magnetron with a pulse of 5kV at 5A. System considerations make a pulse width of 3.5us and repetition rate of 99Hz necessary. The pulse is generated in a line-type pulse circuit which utilizes an SCR as a switching device. It is shown that a solid-state modulator can …

A Simplification Of Underwater Acoustic Equations, Morris G. Middleton Jan 1973

A Simplification Of Underwater Acoustic Equations, Morris G. Middleton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This Research Report presents some of the equations of underwater acoustics that relate to the signal excess noise received by a transducer. The basic structural equation is developed, as are defining equations for each term in that equation. An analysis is performed utilizing typical values to ascertain if the elements of the structural equation can be simplified. Results delineate that several terms of that equation can be neglected while maintaining a relative high degree of accuracy.

Development Of A Sixteen Line Multiplexer, James H. Stangel Jan 1973

Development Of A Sixteen Line Multiplexer, James H. Stangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report explains the development of a telephone line multiplexer to be used with a computer based personal paging system. The large geographical area coverage made possible by computer processing results in many calls having to cross telephone tariff boundaries. Since system users cannot be expected to pay long distance charges, dedicated lines which cross tariff boundaries must be leased. Multiplexing applied to those leased lines reduces the cost of data transmission, and is, therefore, justified. The design of the multiplexer proceeds from a specification set which is derived from user response requirements. Fundamentally, the response consists in advising the …

Construction Systems For Detached, Single-Story Concrete Block Houses In Florida: Current Practices, Costs And Potential Innovations, Randolph Deshields Mcdonald

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Concrete block single-story detached homes are popular residences in Florida, but construction materials and methods must undergo changes to combat rising prices and material shortages. Those systems with the greatest pressure of price or material shortage will change first. When current costs and methods are examine, it is found that two systems, roof and exterior walls, have the greatest need for changes in the immediate future; and one system, thermal insulation, needs an empirical study. The roof is of materials which are in short supply and rapidly increasing in cost. The study concludes that, with present cost trends, metal frame …

An Evaluation Of Water Softening, James Burr Aton Jan 1973

An Evaluation Of Water Softening, James Burr Aton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic modeling is proposed in this paper as a method of developing a computer model to simulate a water softening treatment unit. Information on water softening economics and ion exchange are examined. The development of a dynamic model is oriented toward uniform effluent water quality and operational flexibility. Several methods are presented to determine the reaction rate used in the completely mixed flow reactor's dynamic model. Based on preliminary data the proposed dynamic model would calculate removal rate similar to those found in an existing plant.
