A Binary Power Generation And Salt Water Distillation Cycle, Edward H. Hardison
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This research report discusses a binary power generation and salt water distillation cycle that was the subject of a feasibility study at Florida Technological University. The thermodynamic equations are derived and the results of a parametric study to determine optimum fluid properties is presented. This cycle produces power at efficiencies significantly higher than that of conventional cycles and at the same time produces a significant amount of fresh water. The efficiency is maintained even at the high turbine outlet temperature necessary to produce fresh water. The important quantities in considering they cycle efficiency and the fresh water production are the …
Operation And Calibration Procedures For A Small Four-Component Strain Gage Balance, Gary Allen Rasponi
Operation And Calibration Procedures For A Small Four-Component Strain Gage Balance, Gary Allen Rasponi
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The Florida Technological University four-component strain-gage balance is an internally mounted, half-inch diameter balance capable of measuring four components of load: front and rear normal force, axial force, and rolling moment. Measurement of these components is accomplished by means of sixteen strain gages that are mounted on the balance and wired into four full bridge circuits. When the balance is subjected to a load, the strain gages, through a small resistance change, indicated the strain a balance element is undergoing. This report presents a description of the balance and its support equipment, and outlines specific calibration procedures necessary to their …

A Design Report On A Servo Controlled Inertial Sensor Test Fixture, James B. Dowdle
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report discusses the design of a servo controlled positioning system for remote control positioning of inertial sensors while under high acceleration test in a centrifuge. A rotating fixture and an electronic control panel was built for this purpose, with two modes of operation. The fixture can be positioned with an accuracy of 0.05 degrees and a resolution of 0.01 degrees, or it can be maintained in a constant velocity mode at rates from 1 to 16 degrees per second. The velocity loop was implemented as a phase locked loop, and the command rate is entered as a frequency - …
Intermodulation Analysis Of Class C Transistorized Amplifiers With Applications To V.H.F. Amplifiers, Robert Hopkins Wollam
Intermodulation Analysis Of Class C Transistorized Amplifiers With Applications To V.H.F. Amplifiers, Robert Hopkins Wollam
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The paper discusses the theoretical analysis and the experimental work done to describe the cause of intermodulation distortion in class C transistorized amplifiers. A mathematical basis for the intermodulation was derived using a single frequency input and a second frequency introduced into the output of the amplifier. It was followed by experimental work performed to justify the theory. These experiments used both pulsed and sinusoidal drives as amplifier inputs. Also, a feedback method along with the transistor's operating point was shown to reduce the intermodulation distortion produced by the amplifier. Finally, a short discussion on the results and some of …

Each unit designed specifically for use in this project will be discussed in some detail, while those purchased locally for use in the project will be only briefly described, as pertaining to their functional importance to the system. In addition, …
Design Considerations For Extended Aeration-Denitrification Facilities, Frank Paul Huttner
Design Considerations For Extended Aeration-Denitrification Facilities, Frank Paul Huttner
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Design considerations and operating procedures were investigated for nitrogen removal in an extended aeration-denitrification facility. Both past and present removal efficiencies were evaluated for the facility, along with capital and operating cost data. The findings of this research indicate that at very long detention times, significant nitrification and denitrification occurred in the plant without the use of chemicals. Overall nitrogen, BOD5, and suspended solids removals were extremely high. The significance of this research is that future plants may achieve high rates of nitrogen removal through innovative design and operating procedures without the use of costly chemicals. However, capital costs needed …

Development Of A Remote Sound Monitoring System, Joseph Owen Ellis
Development Of A Remote Sound Monitoring System, Joseph Owen Ellis
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report explains the development of a sound measuring system for continuous monitoring of sound levels. Dedicated telephone lines are used for data transmission so that sound level data can be monitored at installations far from the area of concern. This allows the sound sensing equipment to be left unattended and thereby greatly reduces the manpower costs of operation. That predetermined data conditions can be detected when they occur and corrective action can be taken immediately at the data receiving installation further justifies the method used. Background information and general need for such a system are discussed. Growing public concern …
Aging Characteristics Of Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Paul Leray Reynolds
Aging Characteristics Of Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Paul Leray Reynolds
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The effect of single-step and two-step aging treatments on the tensile properties of an Al-6 wt. % Ag alloy and an Al-14 wt. % Ag alloy has been investigated. Results show that the tensile properties of these alloys were approximately the same whether they were given single or two-step aging treatments. Reversion treatments applied to the fully age-hardened Al-14 % Ag alloy after 15 minutes at various temperatures between 200 and 350 °C showed two maxima in the ultimate tensile strength and the yield strength. It is believed that this result was caused by two transformation processes occurring simultaneously: i.e., …

Image Analysis And Improvement Of A Point Light Source Visual Flight Simulator, Steve K. Butrimas
Image Analysis And Improvement Of A Point Light Source Visual Flight Simulator, Steve K. Butrimas
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
It has long been desired to simulate a non-preprogrammed controllable visual scene of the real world in a limited area for the purpose of training, in particular for aviation training. There presently exists a point light source projection system designed to accomplish this, however due to physical limitations, the display image, as compared to the corresponding real world scene which is being simulated, is somewhat distorted and limited. This point light source system is analyzed to determine the distortions and deviations from reality and methods are proposed to improve the display by minimizing the distortions and deviations.

A Military Training System Perspective And Model For Training Program Management, Alvin J. Boudreaux
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A perspective of the Naval Education and Training System (NETS) is developed and utilized as a framework on which a simulation model of general training system activities is constructed. The simulation model, which is based on functional activities, emphasizes the interdependent consequences of decisions and actions created through management planning, analysis, and control of training programs. A simulation experiment was conducted using a test situation description (scenario) to reflect the impact of management decisions and actions on the resulting allocation of resources and timeliness of training program activities. Conclusions are drawn regarding the utility and implications of the system dynamics …
A Comparison Of N-Path And Digital Filters For Band Pass Applications, Stephen Cooperman
A Comparison Of N-Path And Digital Filters For Band Pass Applications, Stephen Cooperman
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The classic problem of achieving high Q, band pass, inductorless filters has been traditionally attacked by applying active RC networks. This approach suffers from the faults of poor economy, lack of stability of performance with time and temperature, and high network performance sensitivity to component changes. The problem is reviewed from the aspect of applying techniques other than operational amplifier RC filters. The techniques presented are those of N-Path (switching) and Digital Filters. The underlying theory of both methods is explored and a design example for each of the techniques is presented. These designs are then compared on the basis …
