Study Of The Avalanche Multiplication And Signal-To-Noise Power Ratio In The Ternary InXGa1-XAs Avalanche Photodiode, Susan Lee Wymer
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Major advances in fiber optic transmissions have brought about a need for highly sensitive photodetectors. In order to detect this type of transmission, the photodetector must be able to detect one of the two low loss windows of the fiber optics transmission. The photodetector must also be characterized by a high gain and fast speed of response without generating excessive noise power. This report compares different types of high speed phodetectors with emphasis on the merits of using an avalanche photodiode. The report studies the avalanche multiplication and the signal-to-noise power ratio in the ternary InGaAs. The effects of the …

Treatment And Disposal Of Hazardous Wastes In The East Central Florida Region, Tracey Bell
Treatment And Disposal Of Hazardous Wastes In The East Central Florida Region, Tracey Bell
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Although the East Central Florida area is not heavily industrialized, its dependence on groundwater resources makes it especially vulnerable to contamination by poor waste disposal practices. The East Central Florida area was studied to discover the nature and disposal of hazardous wastes generated. It was found that a large portion of hazardous wastes in the region were from very small industries, distributors, and even consumers. Three of the most toxic and/or voluminous waste problems in the area--metal plating wastes, pesticide wastes, and hospital wastes--were studied to determine available alternatives for disposal and their costs.

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Clutches of eggs wore collected from nesting loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta caretta) on Merritt Island, Florida, during June - August 1977. Of these, 46 clutches were selected for experimentation to determine the extent to which certain factors affect hatching success. Twelve clutches were divided into subsamples which were incubated in sand maintained at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% moisture. Another twelve clutches were divided into subsamples and incubated in sand kept moist with the following percentages of seawater: 0 (distilled water), 25, 50, 75, and 100%; subsamples from four other clutches were subjected to the effects of one …
Accelerated Flight Test Data As A Basis For Forecasting Logistical Requirements Of Military Aircraft, Charles James White
Accelerated Flight Test Data As A Basis For Forecasting Logistical Requirements Of Military Aircraft, Charles James White
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The initial forecasting of logistical support for new types of military aircraft is a perplexing problem. The objective of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using data generated by the accelerated flight tests as a basis for forecasting the logistical field requirements. The data used in the study were obtained from the U.S. Army Aviation Board, Fort Rucker, Alabama, where performance tests are conducted on all new aircraft to determine their suitability for Army use. It was statistically shown that the use of these data could provide more realistic logistical forecasts earlier in the introductory phase of the …

The Feasibility Of Detecting Poliovirus I In Water By Radioimmunoassay, Sheril K. Charba
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A microtiter, solid-phase, indirect radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been developed and evaluated as a method for detecting poliovirus in water samples. Antiserum to poliovirus Type I, LSc2ab, was prepared in rabbits, and high titer, high avidity antiserum to rabbit globulins were radio- actively labeled with 125I by a modification of the Bolton-Hunter and chloramine T methods to increasing specific activities. The immunoreactivity of the labeled antibodies was assessed. After the preparation and standardization of all components of the assay. The optimum assay conditions were determined. These conditions included the method of coating the microtiter wells with antigen, the time and temperature …

The Population Dynamics And Distribution Of Corbicula Manilensis (Philippi) In A Spring-Fed Central Florida Stream, Peter K. Gottfried
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Asiatic clams (Corbicula manilensis Philippi) were sampled at twelve stations randomly located along a 16-km stretch of the Wekiva River, Florida, every three months fro August 1976 to June 1977. Clams were found at most stations. Their abundance ranged from 4 to 1210 per m2. Mean numbers of Corbicula were highest at stations where the bottom sediments were primarily sand and lowest at stations where the bottom sediments were silt and decomposing organic matter. A linear relationship between water temperature, water depth, current velocity, total alkalinity, and pH, and the abundance and distribution of Corbicula was not evident. Seasonally, the …
The Biodegredation Of Vehicular Waste Petroleum In The Roadside Environment, Jesse W. Johnson
The Biodegredation Of Vehicular Waste Petroleum In The Roadside Environment, Jesse W. Johnson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Bacteria from dry and wet roadside environments were examined for the ability to degrade hydrocarbons. The kinds and numbers of bacteria observed were similar to those reported in other petroleum contaminated environments. Surface soils (top 2.5 cm) immediately adjacent to the highway pavement and the sediments of shallow drainage ditches contained the highest concentrations of petroleum degrading bacteria (9.8 x 107 CFU/g). Concentration and species diversity of petroleum degrading bacteria decreased with distance from the highway pavement. Chromatographic analysis of highway stormwater runoff and the soil in close proximity to the highway indicated the presence of complex hydrocarbon mixtures of …

Separation Of 1,3-Pentadiene With Molecular Sieves, Steven R. Schwinn
Separation Of 1,3-Pentadiene With Molecular Sieves, Steven R. Schwinn
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The feasibility of separating piperylene (1,3-pentadiene) from a mixture of five-carbon olefins and diolefins with Linde 5A Molecular Sieves was investigated. Olefins and especially diolefins are very reactive and tend to polymerize on the highly polar adsorptive surface thereby clogging the pores of themolecular sieve. It is believed that the acid sites within the zeolite cages catalyze this polymerization reaction and that poisoning of these sites by adsorption of a nitrogenous base (ethylenediamine, dimethylamine or ammonia) or hydrogen sulfide inhibits the formation of polymers. Two criteria were used in the evaluation of the polymerization inhibitors tested. First, a series of …
A Comparative Study Of Computer-Assisted Instruction Versus Classroom Training Of Naval Technicians Of Varying Aptitude Levels, Daniel J. Dwyer
A Comparative Study Of Computer-Assisted Instruction Versus Classroom Training Of Naval Technicians Of Varying Aptitude Levels, Daniel J. Dwyer
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Any discussion of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) cannot proceed very far without first examining the issue of programmed instruction (PI). CAI is a relatively recent development in the area of education and training, whereas PI enjoys a somewhat longer history. Nonetheless, PI lies at the very heart of CAI and forms the base on which CAI exists. CAI then, may be viewed as a mode or type of PI. B. F. Skinner's work in the 1940's with the principles of operant conditioning laid the groundwork for the concept of PI (Garner, 1966). Operant conditioning is a type of conditioning whereby an …

Digital Architecture For A Computer Based Imaging System, John Osborn Mcintosh
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
There is a great need for a graphic simulation system used as a training device to take the place of actual flying. A good system will greatly reduce the cost of training men as well as cut down on casualties. Several systems have been tried and are now in use. Among them are two that are worthy of more study. These are the CCTV or model board and the digital systems. Both have several disadvantages that create a need for a new system. One such system is an optically based digitally processes system that combines the best features of two …
Wastewater Pretreatment System For A Printed Circuit Board Plant, Raymond F. Green
Wastewater Pretreatment System For A Printed Circuit Board Plant, Raymond F. Green
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The wastewater from the electroplating processes required for the production of printed circuit boards has a high heavy metal content. The regulatory agencies of both the Federal Government and the State of Florida set pretreatment limitations on the quantity of the hazardous heavy metal ions that may be discharged t o a receiving body of water or to a Publicly Owned Treatment Works. A number of treatment processes are available for the effective removal of these pollutants. The mechanism behind the more common processes are discussed in this paper. Many variables must be considered in the design of a wastewater …

Zooplankton Of The St. Johns River Estuary, Frederick C. Tone
Zooplankton Of The St. Johns River Estuary, Frederick C. Tone
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Zooplankton populations in the St. Johns River Estuary ranged from 3,000/m3 to 20,000/m3 during monthly collections from September, 1973 to August, 1974. Acartia tonsa Dana was the dominant organism throughout the year, except for spring blooms of Balanus sp. nauplii in the lower estuary and summer occurrences of Eubosmin tubins in the upper estuary. With these two exceptions, species composition, and community structure were similar throughout the estuary, year round. A patchy distribution of the zooplankton caused high replicate sample variation which made it difficult to detect small population variations. Salinity appeared to have the greatest effect on the distribution …
