Three Communication Responsibilities Concerning Sexual Harassment, Bonnie Wilson Buzza
Three Communication Responsibilities Concerning Sexual Harassment, Bonnie Wilson Buzza
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Framing sexual harassment as an issue of communication ethics and responsibility, this article argues that speech communication professionals should help create informed, sensitive, and practical discussion about harassment on campus. It distinguishes unwanted harassment from consensual attention, notes the role of power in many incidents, and explains that legal definitions do not fully resolve ethical responsibilities. The article identifies three communication responsibilities: discussing the issue honestly and supportively, telling a harasser directly when conduct is unwelcome, and encouraging potential harassers to consider audience, feedback, intent, and effect before speaking or acting. It emphasizes self esteem, assertiveness, institutional policy, grievance procedures, …

An Overview Of The Canadian Communication And Journalism Scene, Thomas L. Mcphail, Rlchelle Larsen
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Surveying communication and journalism education in Canada, this article reviews the uneven development of university programs and the continuing tension between professional training and liberal arts preparation. It identifies established and emerging programs across several provinces, noting stronger development in some regions and slower institutional growth in others. The discussion gives particular attention to the long process that led to the creation of a graduate communication studies program at the University of Calgary, including earlier proposals, media industry support, curricular debates, and arguments for interdisciplinary preparation. The article situates communication education within broader social, political, economic, legal, and cultural changes …
11th Annual Seminar: Defining The Field Of Communication
11th Annual Seminar: Defining The Field Of Communication
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Prepared for ACA’s 1983 annual seminar in Washington, DC, this program outlines a one day meeting devoted to defining communication as a phenomenon and academic field. The seminar schedule includes sessions on the meaning of communication, data based perspectives from journal literature, job listings, and scholar surveys, and organizational perspectives from leaders of major communication related associations. The program emphasizes participant discussion, critique, interpretation, and application as part of a broader year long exchange across regional convention programs and publications. It also includes registration details, fees, location information, and a preregistration form. The item documents ACA’s role in coordinating disciplinary …
Toward A Definition Of The Field: Local Constraints And National Coherence, Dwight Freshley
Toward A Definition Of The Field: Local Constraints And National Coherence, Dwight Freshley
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Using the University of Georgia as an institutional case, this article examines how local departmental structures complicate national efforts to define speech communication as a coherent academic field. It compares broad disciplinary definitions from the Speech Communication Association with the narrower curricular and administrative realities of one department, where communication related areas are dispersed across multiple colleges and schools. The article discusses curriculum revisions, public and interpersonal communication as a departmental core, relations with theatre, journalism, management, and speech pathology, and administrative issues involving promotion review, system committees, service courses, and disciplinary visibility. It contributes to communication administration by showing …
Toward A Definition Of The Field: Local Constraints And National Coherence, John L. Sullivan
Toward A Definition Of The Field: Local Constraints And National Coherence, John L. Sullivan
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Focused on the University of Virginia, this article examines how local institutional expectations can shape communication programs more strongly than national disciplinary definitions. It describes ACA’s regional efforts to identify common goals, methods, and subject matter in the field, then uses Virginia’s movement from speech and drama to rhetoric and communication studies as a case of program adaptation. The article argues that attempts to mirror the full field weakened coherence, while a focused humanistic curriculum in public discourse better matched institutional priorities and improved credibility. It also emphasizes scholarship, external review, naming, faculty hiring, and relations with the Speech Communication …
The Cultural Relevance Of Speech Communication: Approaching The Field From A Humanistic And Artistic Perspective, Mary S. Strine
The Cultural Relevance Of Speech Communication: Approaching The Field From A Humanistic And Artistic Perspective, Mary S. Strine
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Approaching field definition from a humanistic and artistic perspective, this article argues that speech communication should be understood as an integrated cultural discipline rather than a set of separate methodological compartments. It identifies shared disciplinary assumptions about speech as cultural process, speech communication as organized academic inquiry, and the field’s role in refining cultural performance and advancing cultural understanding. The article then outlines three linked functions for humanistic and artistic work: developing cultural performance, reconstructing cultural grammar, and critically examining cultural forms and practices. It also questions divisional boundaries and conventional scholarly formats, suggesting that more integrated, reflexive, and experimental …
Approaching Speech Communication From A Social Scientific Perspective, Alvin Goldberg
Approaching Speech Communication From A Social Scientific Perspective, Alvin Goldberg
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Framing speech communication through a social scientific lens, this article argues that the field can be understood through its content, theories, research methods, critical standards, and applications. It describes how scientifically oriented scholars expanded communication study beyond formal public address to include intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational, and interorganizational processes. The article emphasizes theory development, varied empirical and descriptive methods, standards for evaluating research and coursework, and applications grounded in research findings rather than solely in rhetorical or artistic principles. It also notes tensions between academic respectability and skill development. The article contributes to field definition by presenting social scientific inquiry …
Toward A Definition Of Communication: Speech Communication In The Context Of The Field Of Communication, Theodore Clevenger Jr.
Toward A Definition Of Communication: Speech Communication In The Context Of The Field Of Communication, Theodore Clevenger Jr.
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Reconsidering earlier attempts to define communication, this article argues that communication and speech communication are better understood as fields of study than as unified disciplines with a single core. It uses a Wittgensteinian model of overlapping strands to explain how diverse specialties such as rhetoric, television production, phonetics, advertising, organizational communication, nonverbal communication, and oral interpretation can belong to the same field without sharing one common element. The article rejects narrow definitions that would exclude legitimate areas of inquiry and instead proposes identifying enduring questions that connect speech communication specialties. It contributes to field definition by framing coherence as a …

A National Survey Of Faculty Salaries In Radio, Television, And Film, Garland C. Elmore
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Reporting results from a national salary survey, this article examines compensation for full time radio, television, and film faculty at four year institutions offering majors in the field. It compares salaries by rank, teaching experience, department type, and geographic region, with departments grouped as broadcasting, communication, journalism, mass media, and speech. The article finds variation across department types and regions, while noting that radio, television, and film salaries generally lag behind broader faculty salary averages reported for other disciplines. Tables provide detailed salary comparisons by rank, experience, department, and region. The article contributes to communication administration by offering benchmark data …
A Faculty Perspective On Academic Employment Opportunities, Bruce E. Gronbeck
A Faculty Perspective On Academic Employment Opportunities, Bruce E. Gronbeck
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Written as a reflective assessment of academic employment prospects, this article considers job opportunities for communication graduates in elementary, secondary, and higher education. It identifies positive indicators in school settings, including certification, basic skills mandates, communication curriculum labels, and continuing attention to speaking and listening. For higher education, it points to demand in business, professional, organizational, broadcasting, film, mass communication, and renewed rhetorical studies, while also noting enrollment decline, budget pressure, and possible departmental vulnerability. The article cautions departments against overcommitting permanent resources during periods of high demand and urges coordinated work across educational levels to sustain communication education and …
Priorities For Program Survival, Stanley F. Paulson
Priorities For Program Survival, Stanley F. Paulson
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Written from a dean’s perspective, this article identifies factors that can strengthen speech communication programs during periods of budget pressure and program review. It argues that communication benefits from broad societal growth, employer demand for speaking, listening, interpersonal, and writing abilities, and strong student interest, but also faces economic retrenchment and possible overproduction of academic doctorates. The article recommends four priorities for program survival: high quality research, stronger relationships with other disciplines, balance between theoretical study and competence based instruction, and development of public constituencies including alumni and campus partners. It frames these priorities not only as defensive strategies but …
Sexual Harassment: A Protected Species On Campus?, Bonnie Gene Ritter
Sexual Harassment: A Protected Species On Campus?, Bonnie Gene Ritter
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Arguing from shared academic values rather than from legal documentation, this article examines how sexual harassment can be protected when academic freedom and collegiality are applied too broadly. It contends that faculty communities may use legitimate principles to shield behavior that harms students, colleagues, and institutional trust. The article identifies areas where vague professional standards can enable abuse of power, including mentoring, advising, recommendations, assistantships, funding, and grading. It also criticizes closed internal responses that delay policy development, resist outside inquiry, and protect offenders more than victims. The article contributes to academic ethics by urging clearer limits on professional freedom …
Sexual Harassment In Academic Settings: Implications For Personal Ethical Behavior, Christine Oravec
Sexual Harassment In Academic Settings: Implications For Personal Ethical Behavior, Christine Oravec
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Opening with examples from communication and university settings, this article examines sexual harassment as an ethical problem in academic life. It reviews studies of harassment incidence, definitions, perceived seriousness, and consequences, while emphasizing power differences between faculty and students, possible manipulation of academic rewards, and harms to confidence, mentoring, evaluation, and institutional trust. The article distinguishes personal, institutional, and legal concerns, then focuses on ethical responsibilities that remain even when conduct is not formally prosecuted. It also discusses student use of sexuality, harassment of men, and harassment of faculty women. The article concludes with personal conduct guidelines for instructors, including …
