A Coupling-Of-Modes Model For Saw Transducers With Arbitrary Reflectivity Weighting, Benjamin P. Abbott
A Coupling-Of-Modes Model For Saw Transducers With Arbitrary Reflectivity Weighting, Benjamin P. Abbott
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
An accurate and numerically efficient model for SAW devices incorporating transducers with non-uniformly weighted internal reflections has been developed. The model describes each of the device's transducers using a three port characterization (two acoustic ports and one electric port). These three port descriptions are combined to obtain the complete device's description.
The three port description of a transducer is obtained by representing the response of the non-uniform transducer as that of a set of cascaded uniform sections. The three port solutions for a uniform section of transducer are presented as the results of a coupling-of-modes (COM) analysis. These solutions include …

Writing As A Public Relations Task: How Much Do Public Relations Practitioners Write?, Frank R. Stansberry
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate how much public relations people write in the course of their work; to determine if the amount and type of writing varies with experience, job type or employer; and to investigate what other tasks besides writing public relations professionals do. The sample was 198 members of the Public Relations Society of America who responded to a nation-wide mailing of 500 people selected from the Society's membership directory. Results showed that public relations practitioners spent 36.5 percent of their time writing. Overall, public relations people spend more time on publicity, media relations, and …

Development Of Scale Factors For Clarifier Design Based On Batch Settling Data, Robert K. Anderson
Development Of Scale Factors For Clarifier Design Based On Batch Settling Data, Robert K. Anderson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, batch settling tests have been employed to determine the values of the settling parameters V0 and K of the Vesilind equation which represents activated sludge settling velocity as a function of solids concentration. It remains unresolved how closely batch settling tests describe settling in full-scale clarifiers.
An experimental procedure was developed to determine scale factors between batch settling and full-scale solids flux curves. An experimental protocol was determined for full-scale clarifier operation, including specific criteria of necessary instrumentation and operational flexibility. Several graphical techniques were evaluated and a procedure was selected to determine a scale factor between batch …

K-Shell Photoionization Of Beryllium, Hari P. Saha, C. Denise Caldwell
K-Shell Photoionization Of Beryllium, Hari P. Saha, C. Denise Caldwell
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
The numerical multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method is used to study in detail the photoionization of atomic beryllium near the 1s threshold. Electron correlation effects, which are found to be very important in the K-shell partial photoionization cross section, have been taken into account very accurately through the configuration-interaction procedure. The present results are compared with experimental measurements of the relative contributions of the three major ionization channels and are found to be in excellent agreement. The existence of the principal resonances reported by the experiment has been confirmed and assignments made to these contributions based on accurate energy

Microstructure Analysis Of Thin-Films Deposited By Reactive Evaporation And By Reactive Ion Plating, Karl H. Guenther, Boon Loo, David Burns, Jo Edgell, Debbie Windham, Karl-Heinz Müller
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
Electron microscopy, stylus‐type surface profilometry, and Raman microprobe characterization show distinct differences between thin films deposited by reactive evaporation and by reactive ion plating. Reactive evaporation yields thin films with the well‐known columnar microstructure with appreciable surface roughness and other deficiencies. Low‐voltage, high‐current reactive ion plating deposition produces thin films which are smooth and dense. Cross‐section electron micrographs of ion plated coatings reveal a densely packed polycrystalline structure for ZrO2 , while TiO2 appears to form vitreous films. Molecular dynamics computer simulation of the film formation process is in good qualitative agreement with the experiments. The results suggest the expansion …
Segmentation Using Intensity And Range Data, Jay K. Hackett, Mubarak Shah
Segmentation Using Intensity And Range Data, Jay K. Hackett, Mubarak Shah
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
Perception is the integration of various sensor outputs into a unified vision of the world. A major part of research in machine vision has been limited to the use of individual sensors for building machine vision systems. The use of multisensor data is advocated for object recognition systems, and an algorithm for fusion of intensity and range data for segmentation is proposed. The algorithm consists of two steps. First, the initial seed segmentation is achieved by using the most dominating sensor at a given time. For this purpose the distributions of the intensity and range data are considered, and the …

Fractal Formation Of A Y-Ba-Cu-O Thin-Film On Srtio3, L. Chow, J. Chen, V. Desai, K. Sundaram, S. Arora
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
Fractal formation has been observed after thermal annealing of the rf-sputtered Y-Ba-Cu-O thin film on SrTiO3 substrate. Through energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, it was found that the composition of the fractal was YBa2Cu3Ox and the surrounding film composition was Y2Ba2Cu3Ox. The fractal dimensions D ranging from 1.26 to 1.65 were obtained using the standard sandbox method with different thresholds.

Scattering By A Perfectly Conducting Strip Loaded With A Dielectric Cylinder (Tm Case), A. Z. Eisherbeni, M. Hamid
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
A rigorous analysis of the problem of scattering from an incident E-polarised wave on a dielectric-loaded perfectly conducting strip is presented for a line source and plane wave excitations. The vector Green's theorem is used to derive an integral equation for the unknown electric and magnetic field components. The singular component of the magnetic field is then cancelled out by properly choosing the auxiliary fields and boundary conditions. The unknown expansion coefficients of the scattered electric field are determined by numerically solving an infinite set of simultaneous linear equations after truncation. The accuracy of the proposed solution is verified for …

Auto-Ionizing Resonances 4d- Nl In Cadmium, J. Jiménez-Mier, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
We measured the relative cross section and angular distribution parameter for 5s photoelectron emission in atomic cadmium across the region of the 4d→nl autoionizing resonances between 11.70 and 18.05 eV. Our results for the oscillator strengths agree with Hartree-Fock calculations, and are higher than the values reported by other experiments. Strong departure from the direct-process value of 2.0 was observed for the angular distribution parameter β, indicating singlet-to-triplet mixing in the wave functions. The mixing varies in the np resonance series, while it remains almost constant throughout the nf series. In the region of the 5p resonances …

Numerical Multiconfiguration Self-Consistent-Field Studies Of Atomic Photoionization Cross-Sections - Dynamical Core-Polarization Effects In Atomic Potassium, H. P. Saha
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
The numerical multiconfiguration self-consistent-field method is used to calculate photoionization cross sections of atomic potassium in its ground state for photoelectron energies ranging from 0.0 to 12 eV. The effects of core polarization, which are very important for this atom, are analyzed in detail and are taken into account effectively ab initio in both the initial and the final state, by the configuration-interaction procedure. It is found that the core-polarization effect is very strong in the photoionization cross section of potassium. Our results are found to be in good agreement with previous theoretical calculations throughout the energy region considered and …
Threshold Behavior Of The M-Shell Photoionization Of Argon, H. P. Saha
Threshold Behavior Of The M-Shell Photoionization Of Argon, H. P. Saha
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method, which has been extended to study photoionization of atoms, is applied to calculate the 3s→kp photoionization cross section of argon. It has been shown that the interchannel interaction associated with the 3p→kd transition, which is very strong in the 3s subshell photoionization cross section, can be very efficiently simulated by the bound-continuum channel interaction associated with the 3p→3d transition. The length and velocity forms of cross section agree very well throughout the range of energies considered. Our results compare well with other theoretical estimates and are in better agreement with experimental measurements.
Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Neon Atoms, H. P. Saha
Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Neon Atoms, H. P. Saha
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method of Saha, Pindzola, and Compton [Phys. Rev. A 38, 128 (1988)] applied to photoionization of atoms has been extended in order to consider elastic scattering of electrons from neon atoms. The dynamical polarization and the electron-correlation effects, which are very important in this case, have been taken into account more accurately in the ab initio method through the configuration-interaction procedure. Phase shifts, and differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections for electrons elastically scattered from neon atoms are reported for the impact-energy range from 0.136 to 70 eV. The calculated results are compared with experimental and …
Accurate Abinitio Calculation On The Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Helium, H. P. Saha
Accurate Abinitio Calculation On The Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Helium, H. P. Saha
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method developed by Saha [Phys. Rev. A 39, 5048 (1989)] to study scattering of electrons from atoms has been applied to the low-energy elastic scattering of electrons from helium atoms. The short-range electron correlation and the long-range dynamical polarization of the target by the scattering electron, which are very important in these calculations, have been taken into account in an accurate ab initio manner through the configuration-interaction procedure. Detailed results for phase shifts, elastic differential, integral-elastic, and momentum-transfer cross sections for electrons elastically scattered from helium are reported for the low and intermediate energies ranging from …
