The Usitt Evaluation Guidelines: How Do We Use Them? Where Do We Go From Here?, Lucy Nowell Oct 1989

The Usitt Evaluation Guidelines: How Do We Use Them? Where Do We Go From Here?, Lucy Nowell

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes the United States Institute for Theatre Technology evaluation guidelines and their implications for tenure and promotion decisions affecting theatre design and technology faculty. Grounded in professional practice literature, it traces how workload inflation, unsafe studio conditions, and inequitable compensation erode artistic productivity, career longevity, and departmental morale, while also discouraging recruitment of graduate technologists. Narrative evidence and survey data illustrate systemic burnout and attrition among technical directors, costumers, and designers, prompting a call for labor budget planning, transparent performance metrics, and balanced recognition of creative scholarship. The discussion links faculty evaluation with student learning, occupational safety, and …

Workload Policies For Theatre Faculty And Staff At Columbus College, Hazel E. Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines workload policies for theatre faculty within a teaching oriented college in the Georgia University System. Through descriptive review of institutional practice, it contrasts lecture, laboratory, lecture laboratory, one on one, and extended laboratory courses, detailing how student instructor contact hours, rather than credit hours, more accurately capture instructional effort in performance oriented pedagogy. The discussion highlights strategies such as piggybacking courses, applying two thirds to one credit for individual instruction, and adopting three to one calculations for production laboratories, thereby aligning faculty release time with actual preparation and supervision demands. By comparing theatre workload practices with those …

Methodological Issues Regarding Student Evaluation Of Teachers: A Pilot Study, Craig Monroe, Mark G. Borzi Oct 1989

Methodological Issues Regarding Student Evaluation Of Teachers: A Pilot Study, Craig Monroe, Mark G. Borzi

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article interrogates prevailing student evaluation instruments in higher education, assessing their construct validity through exploratory factor analysis of a campus wide rating scale. The analysis reveals that a single ambiguous factor explains negligible variance, suggesting ratings measure student attraction rather than pedagogical competence. Situating findings within accountability discourse and psychometric theory, this article urges replacing item aggregation strategies with a theory driven model of teaching effectiveness. It outlines an iterative procedure for item generation, confirmatory analysis, and context sensitive deployment, differentiating between global and specific, descriptive and evaluative prompts, and recognizing curricular variation across service, undergraduate, and graduate courses. …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the allocation of equivalent time for theatre faculty in higher education, focusing on designers technical directors and production managers. Using survey data and reflective analysis it shows that institutions offer inconsistent released time ranging from zero to six credit hours, often undervaluing the extensive labor required for scenic costume and lighting work. This article critiques current formulas, proposes that each production role receive at least three credit hours of equivalent time per show, and advocates hiring qualified staff to supervise construction, balancing production schedules, …

"Doan Be De Wictim: A Commentary On Workload Policies For Theatre Faculty And Staff, David W. Weiss

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article interrogates workload policy frameworks for theatre faculty and staff in higher education, spotlighting the unequal burdens borne by design and technology practitioners. Drawing on reflective professional experience and institutional observation, the narrative traces how expanding production complexity, administrative paperwork, and audience sophistication intensify teaching load and backstage labor. The text identifies structural inequities that cast designers and technicians as chronic victims, then outlines pragmatic remedies: selective season planning, addition of full time shop technicians, enforcement of union inspired hour caps, and mission focused alignment between curricular goals and production scale. By comparing academic practice with professional theatre standards, …

Xeriscape: Landscape That Saves, Florida Solar Energy Center, Carolyn King Burns Aug 1989

Xeriscape: Landscape That Saves, Florida Solar Energy Center, Carolyn King Burns

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Today's headlines trumpet urgent energy concerns. Still, there are ways in which individual effort cumulatively can slow, stop, and even reverse the negative impact of poor conservation habits.

Landscaping spends energy in a variety of ways: in the manufacture and use of fertilizers; in the manufacture, use, and fueling of landscaping equipment; in the production and distribution of our water supply; and in physical effort. But Xeriscaping saves energy.

With 800 - 900 people a day moving to the land of sunshine, water is increasingly precious. In Florida outdoor irrigation alone can consume up to 50 percent of the average …
