A Department Chair's Perspective: Promotion And Tenure, Nancy L. Harper

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article delineates a department chair perspective on promotion and tenure deliberations in communication studies, portraying the evaluation process as a rhetorical practice that reconciles honest appraisal with institutional advocacy. It presents three essential steps. First, chairs conduct comprehensive annual reviews of untenured faculty, producing documented feedback that clarifies expectations for teaching, research, advising, and service. Second, accumulated reports demonstrate sustained professional growth, justifying future institutional investment. Third, when recommending promotion and tenure, chairs craft a strategic cover letter that foregrounds departmental needs and candidate strengths while addressing weaknesses with balanced argument. Drawing on administrative experience, the discussion stresses evidence …

Calculation Of The Base Current Components And Determination Of Their Relative Importance In Algaas/Gaas And Inalas/Ingaas Heterojunction Bipolar-Transistors, J. J. Liou Jan 1991

Calculation Of The Base Current Components And Determination Of Their Relative Importance In Algaas/Gaas And Inalas/Ingaas Heterojunction Bipolar-Transistors, J. J. Liou

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The base current density J(B) is an important parameter in determining the common-emitter current gain beta of heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). To develop an analytical beta model with which a circuit designer can quickly estimate the current gain in a HBT, it is also important to identify the dominant component of J(B) so that minimum computations are required. Based on heterojunction device physics, the three components of J(B) have been calculated, namely, the recombination current density in the base J(RB), the recombination current density in the space-charge region J(SCR), and the injection current density from the base to the emitter …

Abinitio Calculation Of Static Atomic Dipole Polarizabilities, H. P. Saha, C. D. Caldwell Jan 1991

Abinitio Calculation Of Static Atomic Dipole Polarizabilities, H. P. Saha, C. D. Caldwell

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The simultaneous optimization of the bound and continuum multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock orbitals for an electron scattered by an atom leads to a set of bound orbitals for the target atom that completely takes into account the polarization of the target by the electron. The polarized orbitals that are generated for zero kinetic energy and angular momentum of the continuum electron form an excellent basis for the calculation of the static dipole polarizability. We have done this for the ground states of the inert-gas atoms helium, neon, and argon. Our results agree extremely well with experimental measurements, indicating that this ab initio …

Work Group Norms And Their Relationship To Absenteeism, Arantzazu Ceberio Jan 1991

Work Group Norms And Their Relationship To Absenteeism, Arantzazu Ceberio

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Absenteeism is acknowledged as a management problem in all industrialized countries. The estimated cost for the American economy is 30 to 40 billion dollars a year. A large percentage of absenteeism is avoidable in companies committed to creating an. attendance oriented climate. Recent research on absenteeism has shifted from traditional studies on employees' individual motivation to focusing on the role of work group norms on attendance and "absence culture." This new framework proposes that the amount of absences taken by an employee are influenced by the prevailing absence culture of the organization. This study identifies the different absence cultures in …

College Students' Perceptions Of Parental Sexuality, Nancy L. Janisz Jan 1991

College Students' Perceptions Of Parental Sexuality, Nancy L. Janisz

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Pocs and Godow (1977) published research results indicating that college students experienced difficulty in considering their parents as sexual beings. The results of the present study were based on responses of 330 college students to a questionnaire authored by the examiner. Results were compared to Pocs and Godow's results, and research data from Kinsey (1948, 1953) and Hunt (1972), which presented the reported frequencies of sexual activities of the parent-aged population. The comparisons suggest that although estimates of the subjects in the current study were higher in all areas than in the Pocs and Godow data, today's college students still …

Dividend Signalling, Cash Flow, And Market Reaction: An Empirical Investigation, Zheng Gu Jan 1991

Dividend Signalling, Cash Flow, And Market Reaction: An Empirical Investigation, Zheng Gu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Financial signaling theory has hypothesized that signals are backed up by improved cash flow. The relationship between signals and cash flow, however, has never been empirically investigated. The purpose of this paper is to conduct such an investigation by examining the relationship between cash flow and dividend signal, the most frequently employed financial signal. In particular, this study examines if there are false dividend signals that are not supported by better cash flow and how the market reacts to them. A two-stage empirical dividend signalling model is developed. Unexpected dividend increases of non-financial and non-regulated firms from 1982 through 1986 …
