Express Transit Service For The University Of Central Florida, Arturo J. Perez Jan 1992

Express Transit Service For The University Of Central Florida, Arturo J. Perez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

As one of the fastest growing universities in the State of Florida, the University of Central Florida (UCF) is faced with the hardships placed on higher learning institutions across the nation. The increase of students paralleled by the increase of motor vehicles on the university campus, and the shortage of funding needed to construct the necessary parking facilities to support this growth, has left the University with a big dilemma, whether to try to overcome the parking space deficit by building the needed spaces to accommodate the demand, or provide a mass transit system that would reduce the number of …

Global Domination Of Factors Of A Graph, Julie R. Carrington Jan 1992

Global Domination Of Factors Of A Graph, Julie R. Carrington

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A factoring of a graph G = (V, E) is a collection of spanning subgraphs F1, F2, ... , Fk, known as factors into which the edge set E has been partitioned. A dominating set of a graph is a set of nodes such that every node in the graph is either contained in the set or has an edge to some node in the set. Each factor Fi is itself a graph and so has a dominating set. This set is called a local dominating set or LDS. An LDS of minimum …

Laser-Produced Plasmas For Soft-X-Ray Projection Lithography, W. T. Silfvast, M. C. Richardson, H. Bender, A. Hanzo, V. Yanovsky, F. Jin, J. Thorpe Jan 1992

Laser-Produced Plasmas For Soft-X-Ray Projection Lithography, W. T. Silfvast, M. C. Richardson, H. Bender, A. Hanzo, V. Yanovsky, F. Jin, J. Thorpe

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Laser-produced plasmas are one of the most likely sources to be used for soft x-ray projection lithography. The characteristics of these sources are described in terms of the expected radiation efficiency within the illumination bandwidth of a lithographic system. Measurements of the plasma particulate emission are described and techniques for interdicting this emission before it reaches the illumination optics are discussed. The laser requirements are obtained for a lithographic system producing a wafer rate of 60, 6 in. wafers per hour.

Scaling Behavior Of The Ising-Model Coupled To 2-Dimensional Quantum-Gravity, Simon M. Catterall, John B. Kogut, Ray L. Renken Jan 1992

Scaling Behavior Of The Ising-Model Coupled To 2-Dimensional Quantum-Gravity, Simon M. Catterall, John B. Kogut, Ray L. Renken

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We study the Ising model on dynamical phi(3) graphs with spherical topology. A finite-size scaling analysis is carried out both with and without an external field leading to numerical estimates for various critical exponents which are in good agreement with analytical calculations. We further determine the equation of state, and measure the correlation of Ising spins on the ensemble of graphs.

The Harmonic Lattice, Recoilless Transitions, And The Coherent State, David S. Bateman, Subir K. Bose, Binayak Dutta-Roy, Manoranjan Bhattacharyya

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The probability for recoilless transitions, relevant for the understanding of x-ray scattering from atoms bound in a crystal (applicable also to elastic scattering of neutrons from solids and to the Mossbauer effect), given by the Debye-Waller factor, is derived in a novel manner using the coherent state basis for the normal mode oscillators describing the harmonic lattice, a method which, while being simple and elegant, also reveals the relationship to a heuristic classical discussion of the problem.

The Mapping Of The Coulomb Problem Into The Oscillator, David S. Bateman, Clinton Boyd, Binayak Dutta-Roy

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The mapping of the Schrodinger equation for the "hydrogen atom" in one, two, and three dimensions into that for the oscillator is reviewed, with the purpose of relating two of the most basic,'illustrative, and useful problems discussed in introductory quantum mechanics courses.

Simultaneous Measurement Of Electron And Hole Escape Times From Biased Single Quantum-Wells, J. A. Cavaillès, D. A. B. Miller, J. E. Cunningham, P. Li Kam Wa, A. Miller Jan 1992

Simultaneous Measurement Of Electron And Hole Escape Times From Biased Single Quantum-Wells, J. A. Cavaillès, D. A. B. Miller, J. E. Cunningham, P. Li Kam Wa, A. Miller

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Picosecond pump probe measurements on waveguides containing a single GaAs/GaAlAs quantum well have enabled us to determine for the first time both electron and hole escape times from biased quantum wells. Contributions from excitonic saturation and field screening by photogenerated carriers can be clearly identified in the nonlinear transition signal and are quantitatively modeled. Preliminary analysis suggests that thermally assisted escape is dominant at room temperature, but discrepancies are found with conventional thermionic emission models.

Pressure-Dependence Of The Hyperfine Field Of A Cd Probe In A Relaxed Trivacancy Complex In Ni, Lee Chow, Xin Zhao, Gary S. Collins Jan 1992

Pressure-Dependence Of The Hyperfine Field Of A Cd Probe In A Relaxed Trivacancy Complex In Ni, Lee Chow, Xin Zhao, Gary S. Collins

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Perturbed gamma-gamma-angular-correlation experiments were carried out using extremely dilute Cd-111 probes to measure the pressure dependence of the magnetic hyperfine field at a vacancy-solute complex in Ni in which the Cd probe is relaxed to the center of a tetrahedron of vacancies. The pressure dependence of the hyperfine field of the defect-free substitutional site was found to be dH(hf)/dp = -0.038(6) kG/kbar, which agrees with a previous measurement. The pressure dependence of the hyperfine field associated with the vacancy complex was found to be dH(hf)/dp = -0.023(4) kG/kbar. Results are not found to be consistent with a simple picture of …

Hyperspherical Formulation Of Impurity-Bound Excitons In Semiconductors, J. J. De Groote, J. E. Hornos, H. T. Coelho, C. D. Caldwell Jan 1992

Hyperspherical Formulation Of Impurity-Bound Excitons In Semiconductors, J. J. De Groote, J. E. Hornos, H. T. Coelho, C. D. Caldwell

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A hyperspherical formalism is shown to be an appropriate approach for the investigation of the three-particle complex corresponding to an exciton bound to a Coulomb center in a semiconductor. The ground- and excited-state potential curves and binding energies are calculated as a function of the mass ratio of the hole and electron, and the concept of a critical mass is discussed. The results that we have obtained are in very good agreement with variational calculations for several semiconductor materials.

Deviations From Perfect Integer Quantum Hall-Effect, O. Heinonen Jan 1992

Deviations From Perfect Integer Quantum Hall-Effect, O. Heinonen

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Deviations from perfect quantization of the Hall resistivity rho(yx) at integer filling factors have recently been observed in Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. We demonstrate how scattering between degenerate states at the edges in a quantum Hall system can lead to size-dependent deviations in rho(yx) from its quantized values. While the Hall resistivity fluctuates, the current flows without dissipation along the channel due to the absence of backscattering.

Development Of The Drosophila-Melanogaster Caudal Segments Involves Suppression Of The Ventral Regions Of A8, A9 And A10, D. T. Kuhn, M. Sawyer, G. Packert, G. Turenchalk, J. A. Mack, Th. E. Sprey, E. Gustavson, T. B. Kornberg Jan 1992

Development Of The Drosophila-Melanogaster Caudal Segments Involves Suppression Of The Ventral Regions Of A8, A9 And A10, D. T. Kuhn, M. Sawyer, G. Packert, G. Turenchalk, J. A. Mack, Th. E. Sprey, E. Gustavson, T. B. Kornberg

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Whereas the segmental organization of the thorax and anterior abdomen is morphologically delineated in both the Drosophila larva and adult, segments in the head and caudal regions lack such well-defined boundaries. Consequently, the organization of these regions has been difficult to decipher. In this study, transformations caused by the bithorax-complex homeotic mutants 48, M3, Ultraabdominal-1 (Uab1) and tumorous-head-3 (tuh-3), as well as the patterns of engrailed gene expression have been analyzed to investigate the segmental organization of the caudal segments. A special emphasis was placed on sense organs appearing in abdominal segments 8, 9 and 10 (A8-A10): We find that: …

Charge Storage In The Quasi-Neutral Regions Of Si Homojunction, Algaas/Gaas Heterojunction, And Si/Sige Heterojunction Bipolar-Transistors, J. J. Liou Jan 1992

Charge Storage In The Quasi-Neutral Regions Of Si Homojunction, Algaas/Gaas Heterojunction, And Si/Sige Heterojunction Bipolar-Transistors, J. J. Liou

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Charge storage in the quasineutral regions of a bipolar transistor often limits the switching speed of the device, particularly when the transistor is operated in saturation mode (both emitter-base and base-collector junctions are forward biased), a bias condition which occurs frequently in logic circuits. This paper studies and compares the free-carrier charges stored in the quasineutral regions of the conventional Si homojunction bipolar transistor (Si BJT) and the increasingly important AlGaAs/GaAs and Si/SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). The diffusion capacitances associated with this stored charge, which are used in the Gummel-Poon bipolar transistor model, are also calculated and discussed. It …

Electron-Temperature Measurement In Laser-Produced Plasmas By The Ratio Of Isoelectronic Line-Intensities, R. S. Marjoribanks, M. C. Richardson, P. A. Jaanimagi, R. Epstein Jan 1992

Electron-Temperature Measurement In Laser-Produced Plasmas By The Ratio Of Isoelectronic Line-Intensities, R. S. Marjoribanks, M. C. Richardson, P. A. Jaanimagi, R. Epstein

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A class of spectroscopic line ratios has been adapted as a diagnostic of electron temperature from < 100 eV to > 1 keV. The diagnostic makes use of the ratio of line intensities from isoelectronic states of different elements in specially prepared targets. The diagnostic is simple to interpret, shows weak dependence on plasma density, requires only low to moderate spectral resolution, uses a single charge state, and can be adapted to minimize line reabsorption and wavelength coincidences with other spectral lines. We present theoretical and experimental results.

Time Resolved Measurements Of Cross-Well Transport In A Multiple Quantum-Well P-I-N Modulator At High Photogenerated Carrier Densities, A. Miller, C. B. Park, P. Li Kam Wa Jan 1992

Time Resolved Measurements Of Cross-Well Transport In A Multiple Quantum-Well P-I-N Modulator At High Photogenerated Carrier Densities, A. Miller, C. B. Park, P. Li Kam Wa

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Carrier sweep-out rates from GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells have been measured as a function of excitation level on picosecond time scales at different values of applied electric field. A minimum rate of approximately 20 ps was observed under resonant tunneling conditions at low generated carrier densities. At higher excitation levels, the effects of space charge build-up were found to significantly alter the transient nonlinear optical response due to changes in the time constant associated with vertical carrier transport.

Angle-Resolved Photoelectron Spectrometry Of Atomic Chlorine Using Synchrotron Radiation, P. Van Der Meulen, M. O. Krause, C. D. Caldwell, S. B. Whitfield, C. A. De Lange Jan 1992

Angle-Resolved Photoelectron Spectrometry Of Atomic Chlorine Using Synchrotron Radiation, P. Van Der Meulen, M. O. Krause, C. D. Caldwell, S. B. Whitfield, C. A. De Lange

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Using synchrotron-radiation-based angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometry, the Cl 3s3p5(P-3(2)o,1,0)np and 3s3p5(P-1(1)o)np autoionizing Rydberg series are studied by monitoring the relative partial photoionization cross sections and asymmetry parameters of the 3p-1 P-3(2,1,0)e, D-1(2)e, and S-1(0)e ionic states between 21.75 and 27.75 eV. The Rydberg series converging upon the 3s-1 P-3(2)o, P-3(1)o, and P-3(0)o, thresholds are clearly resolved. Rydberg levels up to n = 14 can be identified in the (P-3(2,1,0)o)np series, while the (P-1(1)o)np Rydberg series can be observed up to n = 10. The relative partial cross sections are placed on an absolute scale using previous data obtained with an electron …

Ultrafast All-Optical Switching In Semiconductor Nonlinear Directional-Couplers At Half The Band-Gap, A. Villeneuve, C. C. Yang, P. G. J. Wigley, G. I. Stegeman, J. S. Aitchison, C. N. Ironside Jan 1992

Ultrafast All-Optical Switching In Semiconductor Nonlinear Directional-Couplers At Half The Band-Gap, A. Villeneuve, C. C. Yang, P. G. J. Wigley, G. I. Stegeman, J. S. Aitchison, C. N. Ironside

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Efficient ultrafast all-optical switching in nonlinear directional couplers made of AlGaAs and AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells near half the band gap is reported. The switching is limited by multiphoton absorption which is dominated by three-photon absorption in this spectral range. The three-photon absorption in the quantum well nonlinear directional coupler is stronger than that of bulk AlGaAs. Autocorrelations of the output pulses in the bar and cross states confirm pulse breakup through nonlinear coupling, and illustrate the effects of multiphoton absorption. All sets of experimental data are fitted well by a theoretical model.

High-Energy Carbon-Ions Implantation - An Attempt To Grow Diamond Inside Copper, Z. H. Zhang, L. Chow, K. Paschke, N. Yu, Y. K. Tao, K. Matsuishi, R. L. Meng, P. Hor, W. K. Chu

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

1 MeV carbon ions were implanted into single-crystal copper which was then annealed in argon at temperatures ranging from 350 to 750-degrees-C. Regrowth of the radiation-damaged copper was examined by RBS-channeling measurements. Carbon segregation occurred on annealing at 750-degrees-C. Prolonged annealing at 750-degrees-C caused blistering of the copper layer over the buried carbon. After removal of the blistered copper overlayer, the previously buried carbon layer was examined by Raman scattering, showing that graphite is the dominant phase.

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan Jan 1992

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Experimental modal analysis (EMA) is used as a non-destructive technique for the evaluation of Space Shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) tile bond integrity. Finite element (FE) models for tile systems were developed and were used to generate their vibration characteristics (i.e. natural frequencies and mode shapes). Various TPS tile assembly configurations as well as different bond conditions were analyzed. Results of finite element analyses demonstrated a drop in natural frequencies and a change in mode shapes which correlate with both size and location of disband. Results of experimental testing of tile panels correlated with FE results and demonstrated the feasibility …
