Efficient Convolutional Neural Networks For Image Classification And Regression, Muhammad Tayyab Aug 2023

Efficient Convolutional Neural Networks For Image Classification And Regression, Muhammad Tayyab

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Neural networks have been a topic of research since 1970s and the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were first shown to work well for hand written digits recognition in 1998. These early networks were however still shallow and contained only a few layers. Moreover these networks were mostly trained on a small amount of data in contrast to the modern CNNs which contain hundreds of convolution layers and are trained on millions of images. However, this recent shift in machine learning comes at a cost. Modern neural networks have extremely large number of parameters and require huge amount of computations for …

Gatsby Revived Through Memes, Sabrina Alvarez Aug 2023

Gatsby Revived Through Memes, Sabrina Alvarez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis investigates what memes of the 2013 film The Great Gatsby do to F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel within the digital landscape. Meme images of The Great Gatsby began becoming popular on Tumblr.com. Typically they consist of often humorous text that incorporates an image from the 2013 movie in order to elevate the text into a communally shared in-joke. For example, the use of the "Jay Gatsby raising a glass" meme is commonly used on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr even ten years after the fandom's creation. In the film, the imagery is used to introduce Jay Gatsby …

A Study On Robustness And Semantic Understanding Of Visual Models, Madeline Chantry Aug 2023

A Study On Robustness And Semantic Understanding Of Visual Models, Madeline Chantry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Vision models have improved in popularity and performance on many tasks since the emergence of large-scale datasets, improved access to computational resources, and new model architectures like the transformer. However, it is still not well understood if these models can be deployed in the real world. Because these models are "blackbox" architectures, we do not fully understand what these models are truly learning. An understanding of what models learn "underneath the hood" would result in better improvements for real-world scenarios. Motivated by this, we benchmark these impressive visual models using newly proposed datasets and tasks on their robustness and their …

The Effects Of Microgravity On The Development Of Osteoporosis, Jackson Asiatico

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Previous research has identified a potential link between microgravity conditions and the onset of osteoporosis, a connection that stems from altered fluidic pathways crucial in nutrient dispersion and cell stimulation. Specifically, the absence of mechanical loading in space environments reduces fluid shear stress, thereby disrupting the normal flow of interstitial fluid in trabecular bone. This disruption greatly impacts the functionality of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, the vital cells responsible for maintaining healthy bones. The focus of this study aims to explore the impact of microgravity on bone loss in astronauts, establishing the connection between the lack of mechanical loading and the …

Trauma In The Acting Process: My Role As Camae In The Mountaintop And The Implementation Of Practical Techniques For Empowerment, Anita Bennett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Actors often use their life experiences to evoke emotions and give a compelling performance. Connecting with personal experiences for a role, however, can manifest traumatic experiences. Trauma in the acting process can trigger difficult memories and emotions, which affects the actor's well-being. In graduate school, I discovered that trauma was a detriment to my artistic freedom in the acting process. Without the appropriate tools to address trauma, it affected my well-being and caused me to burnout. Furthermore, trauma was ignored by those involved in the creative process and there was an expectation to mask emotions for the sake of the …

Design Of Stormwater Bmps For Surface And Groundwater Protection Based On Site-Scale Soil Properties: Phase I, Kelly Kibler, Lisa Chambers, Melanie Beazley Aug 2023

Design Of Stormwater Bmps For Surface And Groundwater Protection Based On Site-Scale Soil Properties: Phase I, Kelly Kibler, Lisa Chambers, Melanie Beazley

Florida DOT

Much of Earth’s nutrient cycling takes place in soils. Characteristics of soils control physical, chemical, and biological processes that determine rates of nutrient fluxes, storage, or transformation. As remediation of excess nutrients in stormwater runoff is one function of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs), the soil profile constitutes one of the most important factors of BMP design. Variation observed in BMP effectiveness (e.g., why one BMP design works effectively in one place and not another) can often be explained by variations in the soil profile, either through direct means or by a soil’s influence on hydraulics of stormwater flow through …

A Constant In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The mid-summer glamor events are now history. Wimbledon offered two record-setting championship runs. The All-Star Game was one of the more exciting in recent history, as it opened with two excellent catches by the corner outfielders, both Cubans, who had once roomed together. It ended with a tight finish and the winning home run was hit by a player, not a household name, who blossomed relatively late in his career. The Open also provided some golf excellence as it always does, even though it was without a dramatic finish.
