Technology advances at breakneck speed. That’s exciting to early adopters, who can’t wait to get their hands on the latest piece of tech. For some, the rapid onslaught of technology is frustrating. But there are bigger issues that need our attention.

Odds And Odds, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2019

Odds And Odds, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As 2018 gave way to 2019, Sportsworld passed through a deluge of meaningless bowl games, a scattering of interesting bowl games, and this season’s push toward the Super Bowl. The highlights of these days and weeks are now part of the record. As significant as these events are for some sports fans, there were other less significant and insignificant developments that may have been overlooked.

Bibliometrics And Research Evaluation: Uses And Abuses, Sarah A. Norris Jan 2019

Bibliometrics And Research Evaluation: Uses And Abuses, Sarah A. Norris

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Measuring the impact of research and publications (bibliometrics) has become increasingly common for libraries, academic institutions, and scholars. Libraries use bibliometric measures, such as citation analysis, when considering which journals to acquire and retain. Faculty use them to demonstrate the value of their research in the tenure process. Academic institutions are beginning to use them to demonstrate institutional ranking and prestige (Pagell, 2014; Chen & Liao, 2012). In today’s data driven environment, bibliometrics play a critical role. As with any type of metric, bibliometrics are not without their challenges and issues. Bibliometrics and Research Evaluation: Uses and Abuses aims to …

New Habits Of The New Year, Michele Gill

UCF Forum

Happy 2019! At this time of year, many of us are thinking about resolutions for the new year, and these often involve some kind of change. Yet behavioral change is hard, and it’s rarely a “one and done” kind of action.

Face Your Challenges Like A Linebacker—And Don’T Be Afraid To Blitz, Nicole Wills Jan 2019

Face Your Challenges Like A Linebacker—And Don’T Be Afraid To Blitz, Nicole Wills

UCF Forum

I traveled to New York last summer to hear some inspirational women at Her Conference 2018, a development event for college women and recent graduates. I arrived excited to soak up as much information as I possibly could—especially from the speakers who were currently living out my dream career as a writer—and I left with a notebook filled with ideas and quotes to inspire me.

Nano-Biophysical Approaches For Assessing Nanoparticle Interactions With Biological Systems, Zachary Untracht Jan 2019

Nano-Biophysical Approaches For Assessing Nanoparticle Interactions With Biological Systems, Zachary Untracht

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding interactions between nanoparticles and biological systems is fundamental for the development of emerging nano-biotechnology applications. In this thesis, I present an investigation of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles interactions with biomolecules in two separate studies. The first section of my thesis covers tracking and detection of ZnO nanoparticles using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). ZinkicideTM is a bactericidal ZnO nanoparticle which has been developed for agriculture. The characterization of Zinkicide in biological media and in solution has been difficult due to its high dispersibility and ultra-small size. SDS-PAGE is considered a golden standard for protein qualitative interpretations. In …

I Have Questions, Lorena Matejowsky Jan 2019

I Have Questions, Lorena Matejowsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The poems in this thesis explore mid-life feminism, family, mental illness via anxiety and panic, identities of southern girlhood/womanhood, and the challenges of a social media saturated life. Mothering plays a large part in many of these poems, both embracing it and confronting gendered expectations about it. Telling the truth is explored through poems about white women's complicity in racist systems in the southern United States and how being quiet about it benefits us. Fear and the myriad ways it has manifested in my life is a common thread in this work, especially the fears that accompanied white girls growing …

Let's Take A Selfie! Living In A Snapchat Beauty Filtered World:The Impact It Has On Women's Beauty Perceptions, Angelina Cruz Jan 2019

Let's Take A Selfie! Living In A Snapchat Beauty Filtered World:The Impact It Has On Women's Beauty Perceptions, Angelina Cruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Snapchat's beauty filters have become a prominent force in the social media realm. It's vital in understanding the impact in how Snapchat's beauty filters shape beauty standards among young women. This became the primary motivation of conducting this qualitative study. Six focus groups were conducted to explore the depths of why female college students between the ages of 18-25 decide to post either selfies with Snapchat's beauty filters applied or natural images. Dialectical tensions theory was used as the foundation for this study to explore both the internal and external discursive struggles young women face when deciding to post natural …

The Natural Exile: A Study Of Twenty-First Century Cuban-American Narratives Focusing On The Elderly's Plight, Jasmine Parson Jan 2019

The Natural Exile: A Study Of Twenty-First Century Cuban-American Narratives Focusing On The Elderly's Plight, Jasmine Parson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Developed from the similarity between exile theory and age studies, the term "exile" is expanded to a natural form of exile because of the shocking temporal shift that reconstructs social interaction, familial dynamics, and the aging body. Using Heidegger's theoretical work Being in Time, Simon de Beauvoir's The Coming of Age, and Jean Améry's On Aging as insight, this literary analysis captures how the elderly protagonists Goyo from Cristina García's King of Cuba, Máximo from Ana Menéndez's "In Cuba I was a German Shepherd," and Soledad from Cecilia Rodríguez Milanés's "Abuela Marielita" experience a natural exile among society, their family …

Nike's Corporate Social Advocacy (Csa) Practices As Related To Strategic Issues Management (Sim) And Threats To Organizational Legitimacy, Eve Heffron Jan 2019

Nike's Corporate Social Advocacy (Csa) Practices As Related To Strategic Issues Management (Sim) And Threats To Organizational Legitimacy, Eve Heffron

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research examined how corporate social advocacy (CSA) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts impacted perceptions of authenticity. Using an experimental survey, participants were randomly exposed to Nike's actions related to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement via mock-online news articles. Participants completed a survey that contained Likert-type scale items regarding attitudes (perceived corporate intent, perceived authenticity, brand trust, and brand credibility) and behavioral intentions (word of mouth intentions (WOM), and purchase intention (PI)). Results indicated that positive attitudes significantly increased when Nike implemented an action step after taking a public stance on a controversial social-political issue. Further, results revealed …

The Relativistic Harmonic Oscillator And The Generalization Of Lewis' Invariant, Daniel Reinhart Jan 2019

The Relativistic Harmonic Oscillator And The Generalization Of Lewis' Invariant, Daniel Reinhart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we determine an asymptotic solution for the one dimensional relativistic harmonic oscillator using multiple scale analysis and relate the resulting invariant to Lewis' invariant. We then generalize the equations leading to Lewis' invariant so they are relativistically correct. Next we attempt to find an asymptotic solution for the general equations by making simplifying assumptions on the parameter characterizing the adiabatic nature of the system. The first term in the series for Lewis' invariant corresponds to the adiabatic invariant for systems whose frequency varies slowly. For the relativistic case we find a new conserved quantity and seek to …

The Unacceptable Rise: An Investigation Of School Shootings In The United States, Tracy Gulliford Jan 2019

The Unacceptable Rise: An Investigation Of School Shootings In The United States, Tracy Gulliford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined teachers' understanding of risk factors and characteristics of potential perpetrators of school shootings, as well as the steps to take when they are identified in students. Participants completed a survey that contained Likert-type scale items regarding self efficacy and open-ended questions regarding school violence experiences. A mixed methods analysis revealed three primary conclusions. First, teachers have high levels of self-efficacy regarding the importance of and ability to deal effectively with troubled students. This conclusion suggests that teachers do internalize the relevance of this issue to them. Second, this study revealed a gap in terms of the …

The Role Of Risk Tolerance In Publics’ Health Risk Perception And Responses, Hyoyeun Jun, Yen-I Lee Jan 2019

The Role Of Risk Tolerance In Publics’ Health Risk Perception And Responses, Hyoyeun Jun, Yen-I Lee

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

To better understand how uncertainty influences publics’ risk perception and responses, this study introduced risk tolerance as a new concept to public relations literature and then investigated how publics react to health risks with different temporal distances: climate change and foodborne illness. Through an online survey, this study found out that uncertainty, induced by risk temporal distance, leads to varied risk tolerance, which subsequently influences where and how people seek and share risk information.

Priming The Pump: Does Providing Information Before A Crisis Communications Simulation Provide A Better Learning Experience?, Matt Tidwell Jan 2019

Priming The Pump: Does Providing Information Before A Crisis Communications Simulation Provide A Better Learning Experience?, Matt Tidwell

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

Many crisis communications educators use simulations as a means for students to test their learning in a controlled environment meant to simulate a real-life crisis using an (often hypothetical) organization. This project explores whether providing background and historical information about the organization days or weeks in advance of the simulation can enhance learning. Survey results of students exposed to this method as well as a traditional scenario approach (where all information is provided at once) showed that students preferred the advanced exposure method. The learning experience was judged to be superior overall. In addition, the recognition of understanding risks as …

Understanding Flu Vaccination Acceptance Among U.S. Adults: The Health Belief Model And Media Sources, Tong Xie, Connor Grady, Michael Cacciatore, Glen Nowak Jan 2019

Understanding Flu Vaccination Acceptance Among U.S. Adults: The Health Belief Model And Media Sources, Tong Xie, Connor Grady, Michael Cacciatore, Glen Nowak

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

Based on previous studies about the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the reinforcing relationship between media selectivity or preference and individual’s behavior, this study used a national representative adult sample to assess flu vaccination as the result of an appraisal of relevant health beliefs, trust towards the authoritative entities (e.g. CDC & FDA) and vaccine-related media information, in addition to one’s existing behavior pattern. Results showed that not-vaccinated individuals differ significantly in their vaccine-related health believes and the trust towards the authoritative information sources. This group acquired less recommendation from health care providers and more negative sentiments about flu vaccine …

Secondary Crisis Communication. A Question Of Actual Or Perceived Credibility?, Bengt Johansson Jan 2019

Secondary Crisis Communication. A Question Of Actual Or Perceived Credibility?, Bengt Johansson

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

An important aspect of crisis communication is secondary crisis communication, which focuses on how people communicate during a crisis. This study seeks to explore the mechanism of credibility in secondary crisis communication. Respondents in a large-scale experiment (N=2382) were exposed to a fictional news story about a terrorist attack and asked to what degree they would share the news story on social media. The design made it possible to test if the sharing of news stories was determined by its actual credibility (through the use of semiotic disclaimers in the news story), or by perceived credibility (the perceived credibility of …

Perceptions Of Risk Of Health Disparities Amid Previously Identified Political Corruption And Ageism In Slovakia, Marta N. Lukacovic, Deborah D. Sellnow-Richmond, Monika Durechova Jan 2019

Perceptions Of Risk Of Health Disparities Amid Previously Identified Political Corruption And Ageism In Slovakia, Marta N. Lukacovic, Deborah D. Sellnow-Richmond, Monika Durechova

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

This study examines the role of traditional versus new media’s impact on citizens’ perceptions of risk within elder care. We analyzed survey data from 112 Slovak citizens regarding their social network activity and perceptions of corruption, ageism, and health disparities in the Slovak elder care system. Previous research (Lukacovic, Sellnow-Richmond, & Durechova, under contract) identified three prominent sociopolitical issues present in the Slovak medical system among Slovak UGC discourse regarding Slovak healthcare inequity: corruption, threats to dignity, and discrimination. Here, we examined the extent to which social media users perceive the prevalence and subsequent risk of experiencing health disparities within …
