This article examines the debates surrounding promotion, tenure, and merit decisions in higher education, emphasizing their emotional and professional impact on faculty and administrators. It argues that while teaching, research, and service remain the universal standards, their application varies widely across institutions and disciplines. This report surveys recent research and applications of Expert Systems in the military training and simulation community. The report reviews twenty-one recent papers covering this subject. Each paper reviewed has been assigned a class which establishes the phase of development of the system or activities described. For each paper the abstract is given, followed by comments which summarize in more detail significant parameters of the activities reported. This is then followed by a listing of the specific Expert System "areas of interest" described in the paper.

This article examines the rationale for creating a College of Communication and Fine Arts, using the case of Memphis State University as an example. It argues that combining communication and fine arts disciplines into one administrative unit provides advantages in administration, creativity, and efficiency. A separate college allowed norms for faculty loads, facilities, and nontraditional scholarly activities to be judged fairly, rather than against inappropriate benchmarks from larger arts and sciences colleges. The structure also fostered cooperation among previously competitive departments, leading to joint projects in theatre, journalism, music, and visual arts. There is a need for effective cost efficient training programs. Individual differences have been shown to be the most important variable in many training programs and they should be paid special attention in the design of training programs. Compared in this experiment is computer-controlled (lockstep) training, adaptive training, and learner-centered training. Learner-centered and adaptive training are geared to the individual. Instead of lockstep training, learner-centered training allows the trainee to determine the amount or sequence of training at different levels of proficiency. Simulating The Thermal Behavior An Earth-Stationed Satellite Terminal, Anthony M. Jacobi

Lumped parameter modeling using finite differencing, form the basis for a C language simulation of a thermal system. The study of the earth-stationed satellite terminal includes an introduction to the system, derivation of the governing equation, development of a simulation, and a comparison of the results to empirical data.

The analysis is undertaken with emphasis on the worst-case thermal environment, and with determination of the cooling loads and transient response as primary goals. Comparing the predicted cooling loads to empirical data, and previous analyses, indicates an accurate simulation has been constructed. The computer models are offered as an alternative method …

This report surveys the use of microcomputers in existing and emerging training devices, with an emphasis on military training devices. Other major purposes of this report are to familiarize the training device designer with the capabilities of the microcomputer and present the designer with the set of issues to consider in determining if a microcomputer could be used in his particular trainer. The design of an I/O Controller capable of processing data in real time in a tactical training simulator is presented. The controller consists of two microprocessor systems that communicate with peripherals by means of programmed I/O, and with the host computer by Direct Memory Access (DMA) and a serial RS232 link. This thesis addresses both the hardware and software aspects of the controller design.
