Breaking The Mold: Haunted Attraction Mazes; A Study In Reducing Predictability & Increasing Intensity, Within Unconventional Halloween Attraction Experiences, Amy Avalos Jan 2022

Breaking The Mold: Haunted Attraction Mazes; A Study In Reducing Predictability & Increasing Intensity, Within Unconventional Halloween Attraction Experiences, Amy Avalos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Every enchanted Fall season, a segment of the public flocks to a multitude of haunted Halloween attractions across the U.S., to experience fear as a form of amusement and entertainment. Psychologists continue to research the physiological and cognitive behaviors that are associated with fear and the "fight or flight" responses that are triggered when individuals are engaged in a heighten sense of danger. However, as guests traverse through these haunted attraction experiences, it's commonplace for guests to enter into these typical modes of "fight or flight" behaviors very quickly. Once this response kicks in, the guests' instinct is to scramble …

Choreographing Closeness: The Effects Of Intimacy Choreography Best Practices In Educational Theatre, Morgan Cobb Jan 2022

Choreographing Closeness: The Effects Of Intimacy Choreography Best Practices In Educational Theatre, Morgan Cobb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Power dynamics between teacher/director and student/actors in an educational theatre setting are inevitable and directly impact the way consent is viewed and given, specifically with youth performers. In response to the #MeToo movement within theatre and film, the role of intimacy choreographer emerged with the goal of creating a consent-based rehearsal process that ensured the mental, emotional, and physical safety of the actor (Pace 25) while conveying the intimacy required to effectively support the script. The use of intimacy choreographers is almost exclusively used in professional film and theatre settings. Applying the pedagogies created and taught by leading intimacy organizations …

For The Very First Time: A Process Of Rehearsal And Performance In The Beginnings Of Covid-19., Andrew Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Acting is a discipline that changes over time not only for the audience, but for the actors who create it. Not only is their craft shaped through study, practice, and repetition that we as individuals have towards the art form, but it is strongly influenced by our environment and personal histories. As actors, we have to bear in mind what we are presenting, when we are presenting it, and why. These choices are a collaborative effort made through the discussion of various artists including, actor, director, writer, etc. For my thesis, I would like to show you what my journey …

A Theoretical Prototype For Narrative And Interactive Development Within A Theme Park Parade, Carson Luter Jan 2022

A Theoretical Prototype For Narrative And Interactive Development Within A Theme Park Parade, Carson Luter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

While theme park parades have developed with technology and guest demands, there is an opportunity to continue innovating the medium with additional guest interactivity. This thesis tracks experiential comparatives that provide iterative components to be utilized for a new theme park parade concept; parade "show stops" that allow for guests to approach the parade floats up-close, participatory entertainment offerings with live actor-driven branching narratives, roleplay and gameplay-driven interactive experiences, and theme park parades that follow a direct linear narrative. What follows is a theme park parade design concept, accompanied by a production and operational plan, that combines the existing spectacle …

Utilizing Dramaturgy To Activate Creativity In Young Audiences, Joni Newman Jan 2022

Utilizing Dramaturgy To Activate Creativity In Young Audiences, Joni Newman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Theatre for Young Audiences companies in the United States rely heavily on recognized titles to bring in audiences. As a result, most of their productions are adapted from recognizable titles, including films, television series, and popular literature. These adaptations draw audiences in that may not otherwise go to the theatre, which is especially important within the world of TYA where the target audience (children) only gains access to a theatre through adult caregivers. Additionally, most children go to the theatre as part of school field trips, further encouraging season selections that will fill educational needs in addition to providing theatrical …

Musicals, Murders, And Motivation: A View On The Audience And Their Support Towards Musical Murderers Through Maslow, Lesly Nuñez Jan 2022

Musicals, Murders, And Motivation: A View On The Audience And Their Support Towards Musical Murderers Through Maslow, Lesly Nuñez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Audiences relay morbid support towards the enjoyment of horrific entertainment. Such examples are the success and long-standing allure spectators hold towards musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Spring Awakening, Heathers, and more. These are shows that include themes of death, darkness, and tragedy which are presented. Using Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Motivation, The Jungian Archetype of Shadow, and Catharsis I will show how audiences are supportive of protagonists who portray actions resulting in death, darkness, and murder despite the societal pressure to find such subject matter as offensive, vile, repugnant, or obscene. By referencing the characters found …

Eco-Tya: An Exploration Of Youth Agency And The Role Of Environment In Creating Balanced Theatrical Collaborations, Sage Tokach Jan 2022

Eco-Tya: An Exploration Of Youth Agency And The Role Of Environment In Creating Balanced Theatrical Collaborations, Sage Tokach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Systems of power in traditional theatrical and educational models may lead to controlled, efficient classrooms, but they do not help us facilitate creative, collaborative spaces. These power structures privilege some people over others and all people over environmental concerns. Eco-theatre artists emphasize the agency of more-than-human materials and encourage us to see our environment as a collaborator. Using eco-theatre theories in a synthesized methodology, this thesis explores how facilitators might interact differently with students and surroundings to disrupt power structures and lead to more inclusive collaborations. What tools and practices help students embrace challenges and work through tensions on their …

Creating Themed Accessible Spaces Through Hospitality Design, Sidney Wolf Jan 2022

Creating Themed Accessible Spaces Through Hospitality Design, Sidney Wolf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis summarizes available literature about the individual requirements and specific design attributes needed to understand, apply, develop, and design a themed hotel with an emphasis in accessibility and inclusivity. This thesis contains a visual project and design guide that focuses on creating a themed space that offers modern means of accessibility for mobility aids, or for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or partially sighted. The guide summarizes literature on existing codes and explores other resources to adapt them to create an inclusive narrative environment. The visual project applies the material found in the guide and produces …

Sensory Overload: Creating Autism-Friendly Areas In Theme Parks Through Universal Design Principles, Lindsey Leffel Jan 2022

Sensory Overload: Creating Autism-Friendly Areas In Theme Parks Through Universal Design Principles, Lindsey Leffel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis project explores the application of Universal Design principles to the development of purpose-built rest and play spaces within United States theme parks that provide places of refuge for children with autism and their families. The goal is to offer ideas on how to create spaces where families and individuals can take a break from the over-stimulation of the traditional theme park environment in an area that has been specifically designed with their sensory needs in mind. Though the target demographic for these spaces is children with autism and their families, the ideas offered to create space will not …

Journey To The Dragon's Gate: A Study Of Hybrid Ride Systems And How They Enhance Attraction Storytelling, Matthew Moore Jan 2022

Journey To The Dragon's Gate: A Study Of Hybrid Ride Systems And How They Enhance Attraction Storytelling, Matthew Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purpose of this thesis is to explore a new type of ride design which integrates one or more transitions between formats. Theme Park visitors have come to expect a certain type of immersive experience from attractions. Most rides in the parks are very predictable such as roller coasters which offer loops, drops, speed and quick turns, while dark rides offer a slower pace with the attention on storytelling. The solution to this situation is to combine two ride systems or more into a single ride. The ride system for my attraction begins with a free-floating boat ride navigating its …

Exploring Best Practices Of Teaching Theatre For Social Change To Youth, Samantha Reser Jan 2022

Exploring Best Practices Of Teaching Theatre For Social Change To Youth, Samantha Reser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

What does it look like to have youth embody activism through theatre, and how do they take what they learned through theatre and implement it in their everyday lives? Many enter the field of Theatre for Young Audiences because they believe young people (that is, youth that are 18 and younger) have the power to change the world. While the Theatre for Young Audiences field often produces plays that teach young people about the power of change, it is also important to consider how we center and amplify youth voices in the conversations about societal change. As a teaching artist …

Theme Park Queues As Diegetic Worlds: Using Star Wars: Rise Of The Resistance As A Case Study For Core Design Elements, Jordan Zauha Jan 2022

Theme Park Queues As Diegetic Worlds: Using Star Wars: Rise Of The Resistance As A Case Study For Core Design Elements, Jordan Zauha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis seeks to establish core design elements for use by theme park designers to complement the guidelines established by Ledbetter and his colleagues for theme parks. Building upon Rose Biggin's "strands of enquiry" for examining immersive theatre, the suggested core design elements for immersive theme park queues serve as guidance to craft queues where audiences can actively engage with the queue's storyworld and narrative. Implementation of the core design elements alongside the already established queue design guidelines should assist designers in crafting queues that minimize discomfort and maximize narrative immersion. Theme parks offer location-based narrative landscapes, often contributing to …

Bridging A Need: Audience Participatory Theatre For Non-Profit Fundraising, Ralph Krumins Jan 2022

Bridging A Need: Audience Participatory Theatre For Non-Profit Fundraising, Ralph Krumins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

One of the largest goals for any non-profit organization is to continually retain donors and increase fundraising on a yearly basis. Fundraisers and auctions have been reliable methods for financial stability, but as more nonprofit organizations look to a shrinking pool of donors, non-profits must change the way they ask for support. To stand out in a competitive market, theatre practitioners have the opportunity to create content that connects donors to non-profits through theatrical means. As a new performing arts hire for a non-profit, Seacrest Country Day School, our artistic team was approached by the school development team to find …

A Second Chance: Cary Nicholas And Frontier Florida, Dennis Golladay Dec 2021

A Second Chance: Cary Nicholas And Frontier Florida, Dennis Golladay

Florida Historical Quarterly

On the morning of July 17, 1821, the inhabitants of Pensacola gathered around the town’s public square to witness the ceremony marking the transfer of the Floridas from Spanish to American control. Among the new American residents in the crowd was Cary Nicholas, a thirty-four-year-old transplanted Kentuckian who, like so many others, saw in the territory the prospect for a new start in a life too full of disappointments and failures.

Palm Trees, Public Relations, And Promoters: Boosting Southeast Florida As A Motion Picture Empire, 1910-1930, Richard Alan Nelson

Florida Historical Quarterly

While the greater Miami area today is the nexus of Florida’s continuing motion picture industry, this was not always the case. Historically, Jacksonville, and to a lesser extent Tampa, were the leading film centers of the state prior to 1920. This reflected their early importance as commercial and transportation hubs, but these advantages began to be outweighed as other areas within Florida also began to develop as popular location sites.

Encounter At The Aucilla, 1862, Katharine Jackson Willis Dec 2021

Encounter At The Aucilla, 1862, Katharine Jackson Willis

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Civil War was more than dramatic sieges, heroic charges, and bloody encounters. There were numerous isolated and little-publicized acts of valor and triumph on both sides. If such affairs did not directly influence the outcome of the war, they hid a special poignance of their own. For Southerners who increasingly learned to endure the painful news of costly mistakes, defeats, and reversals, such individual triumphs were particularly welcome. One example of courage and success occurred on June 2, 1862, in a remote theatre of the conflict: Florida.

Tampa And The New Urban South: The Weight Strike Of 1899, Gary R. Mormino Dec 2021

Tampa And The New Urban South: The Weight Strike Of 1899, Gary R. Mormino

Florida Historical Quarterly

"The decade of the nineties is the watershed of American history," wrote Henry Steele Commager in The American Mind. The case of Tampa, Florida, in this period reinforces Commager’s suggestive thesis that the ten years before the beginning of the twentieth century ushered in modern values accompanied by a profound population change, economic transformation, and urban problems. War, immigration, urbanization, racial turmoil, labor strife, and industrialization— crises of the nineties— helped forge the transformation of Tampa during this era which resulted in the 1899 “Huelga de la Pesa,” (the Weight Strike) and its aftermath.

The Southern Indians In The War Of 1812: The Closing Phase, John Sugden Dec 2021

The Southern Indians In The War Of 1812: The Closing Phase, John Sugden

Florida Historical Quarterly

It has been conventional to equate the conflict between the southern Indians and the United States during the War of 1812 with the Creek war of 1813-1814. More correctly, however, there were three stages of the fighting, each emanating from standing grievances against the Americans nursed by Creek and Seminole bands, but receiving their initial impetus from separate sources. In 1812 and 1813, the Seminoles and their Negro allies, rallied by the Spanish who were concerned to protect their possessions in the south from American filibusters, participated in a number of skirmishes. A second phase of Indian hostility to the …

Pensacola, Florida: A Military City In The New South, James R. Mcgovern Dec 2021

Pensacola, Florida: A Military City In The New South, James R. Mcgovern

Florida Historical Quarterly

When Henry Grady extolled the emergence of the “New South,” he was primarily referring to the advent of an urban industrial civilization in that region; his conception of the “New South” did not foresee the possibility that urbanism in many southern communities would occur without industrialization. While urban history is more than a bookshelf of analyses of individual cities, localized studies of the widely divergent types of cities that make up the “New South“ in the twentieth century would enrich our knowledge of the concept. Pensacola, Florida, emerged as a city in the “New South“ in the period 1900 to …
