Gi Joe Meets Jim Crow: Racial Violence And Reform In World War Ii Florida, Gary R. Mormino

Florida Historical Quarterly

Where were you on December 7, 1941, and what did you experience on that memorable day? If you were Master Sergeant Warren Bryant, stationed at Tampa’s MacDill Field, you were reminded of your place in American society. Bryant explained the coming of war: “When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor . . . all of the whites at MacDill Field were running around with loaded guns. We [blacks] had no guns and no idea of what was going on, so you can imagine what was running through our minds until we learned of the Japanese attack. Even with this knowledge it …

"Hell-By-The-Sea": Florida's Camp Gordon Johnston In World War Ii, David J. Coles

Florida Historical Quarterly

World War II was a profoundly transforming experience in the development of the South and the state of Florida. As historian George Tindall has noted of the region, “To a greater degree than the previous war it put people on the move: to shipyards, war plants, training camps, and far-flung battlefields.” Military facilities costing more than four billion dollars came into being throughout the South, and Florida shared fully in this expansion. The war also brought increased prosperity to both rural and urban areas and hastened the demands of black residents for greater political and economic opportunities.

The Initiative And Referendum In Florida, 1911-1912, Stephen Kerber

Florida Historical Quarterly

On April 13, 1911, Representative Thomas F. West of Santa Rosa County introduced a joint resolution in Florida’s House of Representatives intended to amend the state constitution. 1 West’s proposal, designated as House Joint Resolution (HJR) 222, called for the adoption of two popular progressive-era reforms, the initiative and the referendum.2 Although strenuously opposed by a conservative minority in both legislative houses, HJR 222 achieved the necessary votes to gain passage with relative ease. The strongest opposition to these two innovations in direct democracy manifested itself several months later, during the summer and fall of 1912, when influential reactionaries successfully …

"Florida And The British Investor Revisited": The William Moore Angas Papers At The University Of Florida, Frank Orser

Florida Historical Quarterly

In his 1954 article Alfred P. Tischendorf discussed briefly the role of fifteen British-owned companies in Florida around the turn of the century. 1 He concluded that these enterprises were devoted to development and attracting British immigrants. Generally little is known about British business practices in Florida since very few records exist in the United States. Details about two of the larger English companies, the Land Mortgage Bank and the Florida Syndicate, can now be examined through their business files, recently acquired by the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida and accessioned as the William Moore Angas …

Unpretending Service: The James L. Davis, The Tahoma, And The East Gulf Blockading Squadron, David J. Coles

Florida Historical Quarterly

The United States Navy’s primary mission during the Civil War was to blockade the Confederate coastline. To accomplish this, the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, East Gulf, and West Gulf Blockading Squadrons were established.1 Perhaps the least known of these was the East Gulf Blockading Squadron (EGBS), which was created January 20, 1862, and began independent operations a month later on February 22. Charged with responsibility for the blockade of the Florida peninsula from Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic coast to St. Andrew Bay in the Gulf of Mexico, the EGBS operated for three and one-half years. During that time, the …

Review Essay: Osceola: The White Man's Indian, Theda Perdue Mar 2022

Review Essay: Osceola: The White Man's Indian, Theda Perdue

Florida Historical Quarterly

Patricia R. Wickman’s study of Osceola is not a typical biography. She outlines the major events in the life of Osceola, but her focus is primarily on Osceolana— that is, the artifacts associated with the hero of the Seminoles’ struggle to remain in their homeland. She attempts to separate the genuine accounts of his life and accurate visual representations of him from those that are derivative, and she authenticates some personal belongings while casting considerable doubt on others. Her narrative reads like a detective story. Like all detective work, some of her investigation is technical and dull, while other parts …

Florida's Confederate Guerrillas: John W. Pearson And The Oklawaha Rangers, Zack C. Waters Mar 2022

Florida's Confederate Guerrillas: John W. Pearson And The Oklawaha Rangers, Zack C. Waters

Florida Historical Quarterly

Secession and the approach of hostilities in 1861 found Florida unprepared for civil war. The state’s militia had disintegrated at the end of the Third Seminole War in 1858, and the attempts of Governor Madison Starke Perry to remedy its disorganized condition proved ineffectual. Perry warned Floridians that the political situation called for military preparedness, but his pleas led to little improvement. An 1859 report indicated that the state possessed only one battery of light artillery and fewer than 1,000 muskets and rifles, including more than 250 antiquated flint and steel muskets.

The East Big Cypress Case, 1948-1987: Environmental Politics, Law, And Florida Seminole Tribal Sovereignty, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Congressional enactment of the Seminole Indian Land Claims Settlement Act of 1987 paved the way for resolution of a thirty-nine-year political and legal conflict between the Seminole Indians and the state of Florida over control of one of the most environmentally sensitive regions in the state.1 The area, known as the East Big Cypress Reservation, was a 28,000-acre tract lying in western Broward and Palm Beach counties, and it formed a rectangle measuring approximately six miles north to south and eight miles east to west. On the west, the tract abutted the federal Big Cypress Indian Reservation, which was acquired …
